The non-Farm Payrolls growth was only right before the <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/automatic-data-processing-inc/adp/nas">ADP</a> data and that more robust prediction artificially skewed expectations. The stock market was down less than 1% after the morning lows before recovering off lows in the afternoon. Crude oil sold off and gold was lower before trying a late-day comeback. <br />
<br />
Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:<br />
<br />
Dow Jones 11,674.76 -22.55 (-0.19%)  <br />
S&amp;P 500 1,271.50 -2.35 (-0.18%)  <br />
Nasdaq 2,703.17 -6.72 (-0.25%)<br />

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 14 points to 11,632.00 and S&amp;P 500 futures fell 2.10 points to 1,268.10. Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 3 points at 2,273.25.<br />

U.S. stock markets closed lower yesterday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down about 26 points.<br />
<br />
The December non-farm payroll figures and the latest reading on U.S. unemployment are due today. The payroll data is scheduled to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists project that 175,000 non-farm jobs were created in December.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/07/u-s-stock-futures-down-all-eyes-on-payroll-data/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>U.S. Stock Futures Down, All Eyes on Payroll Data</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/07/u-s-stock-futures-down-all-eyes-on-payroll-data/">U.S. Stock Futures Down, All Eyes on Payroll Data</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 08:00:00 EST. Bright and early, Liz Claiborne reported a <a href="http://www.wwd.com/business-news/liz-claiborne-narrows-its-third-quarter-loss-3373348?justin=3373348">third-quarter loss</a> of $62.7 million, or 67 cents per share, improved from its year-ago loss of $90.5 million, or 96 cents per share. Excluding items, Liz Claiborne swallowed a loss of 24 cents per share from continuing operations.<br />
<br />
Net sales for the quarter declined 14% to $658.3 million -- but, excluding the impact of a shift to licensing models under a new deal with JCPenney (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/penney-j-c-co-inc-holding-co/jcp/nys">JCP</a>), sales fell just 2.7%. Gross margin, meanwhile, expanded to 51.3% from 45.3%.<br />

The stock was off by 9%, on strong volume. The market just wasn't buying the earnings news.</p>
<p>What happened? According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE62I2RP20100319?type=globalMarketsNews">Reuters</a>, the situation didn't seem so bad. The company made 64 cents per share in the fourth quarter. That was a lot better than the $1.58 per-share loss observed in the comparable period twelve months ago. Furthermore, estimates were set at 59 cents per share. Come on, what gives? Plus, if you look at the actual <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/perry-ellis-international-announces-strong-results-for-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-year-2010/rfid310621353/?channel=pf">press release</a>, you'll find some encouraging commentary from management. The worst of the economic problems is hopefully behind the business; in addition, cash flow appears to be decent.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/20/perry-ellis-sold-off-on-q4-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Perry Ellis Sold Off on Q4 Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/20/perry-ellis-sold-off-on-q4-earnings/">Perry Ellis Sold Off on Q4 Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 20 Mar 2010 11:20:00 EST. <ul>
    <li><strong>1-800-Flowers </strong>(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/1-800-flowers-com-inc/flws/nas">FLWS</a>): A good gift, but a poorly run company that has posted a loss for three of the past four quarters.</li>
    <li><strong>Hershey </strong>(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/hershey-company-the/hsy/nys">HSY</a>): Missing out on the Cadbury merger was not so sweet for Hershey.</li>

As I write this, the retailer's shares have lost 30% of their value. Trading volume is heavy. The company missed Wall Street's estimates by a pretty wide margin. <br /><br />The call, was for an <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idINN0638011720090306?rpc=33">adjusted loss of $0.55 per share</a> in the fourth quarter. According to the <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/ann-taylor-reports-fiscal-fourth-quarter/rfid191705645">press release</a>, Ann Taylor lost $1.03 per share on an adjusted basis. Last year at this time, there was a profit of $0.19 per share. What a difference a year makes. By the way, if you include all the GAAP stuff in the current Q4, Ann Taylor lost an amount equal to the mark of the beast. I don't even want to write the evil number out, but it begins with a 6 if you want a hint.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/03/06/ann-taylors-awful-earnings-miss-means-stock-is-a-sell/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ann Taylor's awful earnings miss means stock is a sell </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/03/06/ann-taylors-awful-earnings-miss-means-stock-is-a-sell/">Ann Taylor's awful earnings miss means stock is a sell </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 06 Mar 2009 15:00:00 EST. William L. McComb noted in a <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/liz-claiborne-inc-announces-additional/rfid181560357">press release</a> that "The challenging retail and economic environment requires us to remain more focused than ever on cost rationalization and act decisively to manage the relationship between our revenue and our SG&amp;A."<br /><br />The company's performance has been absolutely brutal of late, and the stock price has followed. But the company will be debuting its <a href="http://www.wowowow.com/post/isaac-mizrahi-and-liz-claiborne-marry-168800?promo=news">new collection</a> designed by Isaac Mizrahi this month, and the buzz appears to be quite good.<br /><br />Liz Claiborne sold has sold off a lot of brands over the past two years -- a wise move given that the value of those assets has likely plunged in the interim. Turning around the company will be impossible without an economic recovery but by cutting costs, ditching lesser brands, and hiring a star to revitalize a legendary brand that has lacked life for years, Liz Claiborne could be poised for a comeback.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/03/liz-claiborne-cuts-725-jobs-turnaround-on-the-horizon/">Liz Claiborne cuts 725 jobs: Turnaround on the horizon?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 13:15:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says companies saddled with high debt loads can be found in every sector in every business. </span><br /> <br /> Overleveraged. Too much debt. Need to pay down debt. How many times have you read that story? <br /><br /> You read it so much because it plays out every day and plays havoc with stock picking almost every time you see a savory stock down on its luck. <br /><br /> This weekend, as I went through the charts, I was amazed at how low some stocks have gone, stocks that I would normally say to just take a flyer on, but turn out to have so much debt, short- and long-term, that they are just too dangerous. <br /><br /> Consider these perhaps poisonous morsels:<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/26/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-too-much-debt-makes-stocks-dangerous/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: Too much debt makes stocks dangerous </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/26/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-too-much-debt-makes-stocks-dangerous/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: Too much debt makes stocks dangerous </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 11:11:00 EST. <p><em><strong> Update Nov. 26, 2008: See all 2008 <a href="http://www.walletpop.com/specials/black-friday-deals">Black Friday deals.</a> </strong></em><br /></p>
This week, some apparel and accessory producers and retailers offer a look at how they've been doing between early summer's economic stimulus spending and the coming holiday season. While <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/polo-ralph-lauren-corporation/rl/nys">Polo Ralph Lauren Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/polo-ralph-lauren-corporation/rl/nys">RL</a>) reported higher earnings last week, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/coldwater-creek-inc/cwtr/nas">Coldwater Creek Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/coldwater-creek-inc/cwtr/nas">CWTR</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/eddie-bauer-holdings-inc/ebhi/nas">Eddie Bauer Holdings Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/eddie-bauer-holdings-inc/ebhi/nas">EBHI</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cole-kenneth-productions-inc/kcp/nys">Kenneth Cole Productions Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cole-kenneth-productions-inc/kcp/nys">KCP</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/k-swiss-inc/ksws/nas">K-Swiss Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/k-swiss-inc/ksws/nas">KSWS</a>) all reported net losses as consumers pulled back on spending over the summer due to higher fuel prices and other economic worries. The expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial for such companies scheduled to report this week don't look much different; i.e., a bright spot or two among lower expectations overall.
<p> </p>
<p>Hip retailer <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/urban-outfitters-inc/urbn/nas">Urban Outfitters Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/urban-outfitters-inc/urbn/nas">URBN</a>) is expected to post earnings 22.9% higher than a year ago, to $0.35 per share, on revenue of $475.9 million (+26.4%). The Philadelphia-based company already said that <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/ap/_a/urban-outfitters-3q-same-store-sales-up/rfid155772107">same-store sales in the quarter</a> were 10% higher. Urban Outfitters has beat expectations in recent quarters, by 11.5% in the previous quarter, and analysts on average recommend buying URBN. Shares fell to a 52-week low of $16.61 per share on Friday, and are down 29.5% from a year ago. Other companies expected to report more modest earnings growth in the coming week include watch and accessory maker <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/fossil-incorporated/fosl/nas">Fossil Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/fossil-incorporated/fosl/nas">FOSL</a>), retail giant <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">Wal-Mart Stores Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/tjx-companies-incorporated/tjx/nys">TJX Companies Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/tjx-companies-incorporated/tjx/nys">TJX</a>), parent of such discount retail chains as T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. These three companies have tended to top analysts estimates in recent quarters, and Fossil and TJX ended the week near their 52-week lows.</p>
<p>While Los Angeles-based <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-apparel-inc/app/ase">American Apparel Inc.</a> (AMEX: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-apparel-inc/app/ase">APP</a>) had a <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/ap/_a/american-apparel-shares-soar-on-2q/rfid131042046">strong second quarter</a>, the casual wear maker is expected to report $0.13 per share earnings for the third quarter, the same as in the year-ago period. And analysts anticipate that <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kohl-s-corporation/kss/nys">Kohl's Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kohl-s-corporation/kss/nys">KSS</a>) will report that profits fell 16.4% to $0.51 per share on revenue of $3.9 billion (+1.9%). Though <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/ap/_a/kohls-reiterates-3rd-quarter-guidance/rfid155820635">same-store sales for October</a> fell 9%, the Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based company reaffirmed its third-quarter forecast. Kohl's has offered positive surprises in recent quarters, topping estimates by 5.6% in the previous quarter. The consensus recommendation remains to buy KSS. Shares have been climbing after reaching a 52-week low in late October, but are still down 32.8% from a year ago.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/11/09/the-week-in-preview-macys-nordstrom-abercrombie-jcpenney-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Macy's, Nordstrom, Abercrombie, JCPenney, and Kohl's</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/11/09/the-week-in-preview-macys-nordstrom-abercrombie-jcpenney-a/">The week in preview: Macy's, Nordstrom, Abercrombie, JCPenney, and Kohl's</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 09 Nov 2008 12:30:00 EST.
