(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/marathon-oil-corporation/mro/nys">MRO</a>), first discussed here on April 20, 2009, at a price of $28.55. The shares <a href="http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details?Symbol=mro&amp;Refer=http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details%3fSymbol%3daol">have surged higher this winter</a>, rising from about $35 to about $49. </p>
<p>Hence, it goes without saying that now would be a good time to consider taking some profits off the table with MRO, if you're in at/near $28.55. </p>
<p>However, those investors who can tolerate the risk can maintain their full position with MRO and go for an even bigger gain.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/14/marathon-oil-vaults-higher/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marathon Oil Vaults Higher</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/14/marathon-oil-vaults-higher/">Marathon Oil Vaults Higher</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. We'll find out whether there's been any movement on that front when employment data for January comes out this week. The <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Challenger%20Job-Cut%20Report">Challenger Job-Cut</a> report and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/ADP%20National%20Employment%20Report">ADP employment data</a> are due Wednesday, and the government's unemployment rate on Friday. Another mild increase in jobs is expected, in line with the three-month average, but not enough to significantly reduce the unemployment rate.</p>
<p>Also look for the ISM <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/ISM%20Manufacturing%20Index">manufacturing</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/ISM%20Non-Manufacturing%20Index">nonmanufacturing</a> indexes this week, as well as the Chicago <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Purchasing%20Managers%20Index%20-%20PMI">PMI</a> and the New York <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/National%20Association%20of%20Purchasing%20Management%20Chicago%20-%20NAPM%20Chicago">NAPM</a> index. And Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will speak to the National Press Club on Thursday.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/30/week-in-preview-january-employment-data-ups-earnings-and-more/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: January Employment Data, UPS Earnings and More</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/30/week-in-preview-january-employment-data-ups-earnings-and-more/">Week in Preview: January Employment Data, UPS Earnings and More</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 30 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. But at a certain point, the operations get too complicated and bloated. The solution? Yes, it's to unwind the deals. Often, Wall Street will be enthusiastic. Just look at Wednesday's announcement from conglomerate ITT (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/itt-corporation/itt/nys">ITT</a>). On news of its plan to split into three publicly traded companies, the shares spiked 16%.</p>
<p>In fact, this may actually be the start of a key trend for 2011. After all, early Thursday Marathon Oil (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/marathon-oil-corporation/mro/nys">MRO</a>) announced that it will <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-01-13/marathon-oil-to-spin-off-refining-marketing-business.html">spin-off its refining and sales operations</a> as a public company (the deal should be closed on June 30). In early trading, the company's shares were up about 10%.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/13/marathon-oil-to-spin-off-refining-operations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marathon Oil to Spin Off Refining Operations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/13/marathon-oil-to-spin-off-refining-operations/">Marathon Oil to Spin Off Refining Operations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 11:20:00 EST. <p>That's good news for investors in most oil stocks, but bad news for U.S. consumers, particularly motorists. However, the view from here argues that one should not dabble in the futures market to try to hedge against rising oil prices. The price of oil is influenced by more than 10 variables, and unless you're prepared to lose up to $500 per day, you're probably going to be at a trading disadvantage.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/22/to-hedge-against-rising-oil-gasoline-prices-consider-oil-compan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>To Hedge Against Rising Oil/Gasoline Prices, Consider Oil Company Shares</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/22/to-hedge-against-rising-oil-gasoline-prices-consider-oil-compan/">To Hedge Against Rising Oil/Gasoline Prices, Consider Oil Company Shares</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 15:30:00 EST. Republicans are poised to gain control of the House of Representatives and gain governorships in Tuesday's mid-term elections. Also, the Federal Reserve is expected to announce another round of <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Quantitative%20Easing">quantitative easing</a> Wednesday, following the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Federal%20Open%20Market%20Committee%20-%20FOMC" target="_blank">FOMC</a> meeting. Major retailers are scheduled to report October <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/same%20store%20sales" target="_blank">same-store sales</a> Thursday, while the October unemployment rate, announced on Friday, is expected to remain at 9.6%.</p>
<p>Toyota's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/toyota-motor-corporation/tm/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">TM</a>) fiscal second-quarter results will be one of the highlights on the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/" class="inlinked" target="_blank">earnings</a> front this week. After three periods of way underestimating Toyota's earnings, have the analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters got it right this time? The stock sure could use a boost. Teva Pharmaceuticals (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/teva-pharmaceutical-industries-limited-american-depositary-shares/teva/nas" class="inlinked" target="_blank">TEVA</a>) is in a similar situation; i.e., high expectations for this week's quarterly results but a stock in need of a boost. Marathon (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/marathon-oil-corporation/mro/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">MRO</a>) and Starbucks (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/starbucks-corporation/sbux/nas" class="inlinked" target="_blank">SBUX</a>) are also expected to post strong earnings growth this week, but both stocks are riding high.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/31/week-in-preview-election-qe2-employment-and-more-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Election, QE2, Unemployment and More Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/31/week-in-preview-election-qe2-employment-and-more-earnings/">Week in Preview: Election, QE2, Unemployment and More Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 31 Oct 2010 12:30:00 EST. <br />
Marathon reported June quarter earnings per share <a href="http://www.marathon.com/content/documents/investor_center/earnings_releases/2010_2q_earnings.pdf">of $1.11</a>, excluding 11 cents in charges, and well above the 81-cent <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ae?s=mro">First Call</a> estimate.<br />
<br />
The June quarter performance was enough to push Marathon's shares slightly higher, and the stock's technical indicators now are more-closely aligned with the company's fundamental indicators -- thus averting a closed position, for now.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/04/the-shares-of-marathon-oil-remain-on-the-mend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Shares of Marathon Oil Remain on the Mend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/04/the-shares-of-marathon-oil-remain-on-the-mend/">The Shares of Marathon Oil Remain on the Mend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 04 Aug 2010 14:40:00 EST. Shortly after 2 p.m. Eastern, the trader sold to open 1,610 contracts of the stock's August 32 put, and simultaneously bought to open an equivalent number of MRO's August 30 put.<br />
<br />
This strategy, known as a short put spread, is essentially a bet that MRO will remain at or above $32 through August expiration. In other words, the trader's main goal is for MRO to remain above the sold put strike, which is the crux of this spread. The purchased put is used only to limit the speculator's risk in the event of an unexpected slide by the underlying equity.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/23/marathon-oil-bullish-credit-spread/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Building a Bullish Credit Spread on Marathon Oil</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/23/marathon-oil-bullish-credit-spread/">Building a Bullish Credit Spread on Marathon Oil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 23 Jul 2010 11:10:00 EST. <p>The editor of <a href="http://www.theprudentspeculator.com/">The Prudent Speculator</a> explains, "However, there is one company with a valuation now hurt by its refining exposure, but that is shifting upstream in a way that makes the eventual mix worth owning now: Marathon Oil (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/marathon-oil-corporation/mro/nys">MRO</a>).</p>
<p>"Since the turn of the century, Marathon Oil has generated an average of 85% of its revenue from refining. And profit coming from the upstream division was weighted by taxes and royalties. The United States government, pushed and prodded by its industrial leaders to get the Chinese to raise the value of the Yuan, should heed these wise words.<br />
<br />
The goal, of course, is to make U.S. goods and services cheaper, thereby improving the balance of trade. The problem is that it makes everything cheaper.<br />
<br />
It is true that it would support the remaining manufacturing base, software companies, commodities and consulting services. However, this is but a portion of what we have to offer.<br />
<br />
What happens if the Yuan increases by 20% against the dollar, and they decide to buy International Business Machines (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/international-business-machines-corporation/ibm/nys">IBM</a>) the company, not just IBM mainframes? This is not so far fetched. Lenovo bought the ThinkPad notebook computer division from IBM and now it sells Lenovo ThinkPads to us. They would be able to buy IBM 20% cheaper than you or I could buy it.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/22/serious-money-the-cost-of-pushing-chinese-yuan-higher/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Serious Money: The Cost of Pushing Chinese Yuan Higher</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/22/serious-money-the-cost-of-pushing-chinese-yuan-higher/">Serious Money: The Cost of Pushing Chinese Yuan Higher</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 22 Apr 2010 14:00:00 EST. <br />
The calculation here is that MRO has three months to do it. If if can't break the range in the summer months -- historically a good period for oil and refined-product prices -- then the technical indicators will have contradicted fundamental indicators for too long, and that almost always calls for exiting the position.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/21/marathon-oil-is-trying-investors-patience/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marathon Oil Is Trying Investors' Patience</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/21/marathon-oil-is-trying-investors-patience/">Marathon Oil Is Trying Investors' Patience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 21 Apr 2010 14:00:00 EST. If it doesn't, MRO's stock will underperform and this position will be closed.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/26/marathon-oil-continues-to-meander/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Marathon Oil Continues to Meander</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/26/marathon-oil-continues-to-meander/">Marathon Oil Continues to Meander</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 15:30:00 EST.
