(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>), first discussed here on June 17, 2009, at a price of $11.23, has pulled back slightly to <a href="http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details?Symbol=m">about $23</a> after a better-than-decent run-up in 2010. But just view that dip as an opportunity to scoop up shares of a preferred company.<br />
<br />
Further, the modifier "battle-honed" has been used because "Big M" has survived the worst U.S. economic contraction since the Great Depression, a downturn that hammered the retail sector. <br />
<br />
Macy's should post a FY2012 same-store sales increase of 3% to 4%, followed by a similar rise in FY2013.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/13/macy-s-indomitable-iconic-retailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Macy's: Indomitable, Iconic Retailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/13/macy-s-indomitable-iconic-retailer/">Macy's: Indomitable, Iconic Retailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 13 Mar 2011 09:00:00 EST. The company will transfer some of its properties to the REIT and then lease back the properties from the entity. The company said that the move may enhance its ability to access debt or preferred stock and improve its liquidity.</p>
<p>The market is currently pricing REITs at rich valuations, and the transaction will allow Dillard's to better monetize its significant real-estate assets. By transferring these holdings into a publicly traded REIT, Dillard's should be able to unlock additional shareholder value. According to Craig Johnson, an analyst at Customer Growth Partners, "the sum of the parts can be greater than the sum of the whole."<br />

(TGT)</a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/cost/" rel="tag">Costco Wholesale (COST)</a></p><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="holdiay shopping" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.dailyfinance.com/media/2010/10/retail240.jpg" />December is not shaping up to have been the retail windfall that many experts predicted, which may be setting up a rather scary situation. Don't worry folks, the experts are going to blame the <a href="http://www.aolnews.com/story/retailers-report-surprisingly-weak/616715/" target="_blank">poor December revenue</a> on different factors, including strong November sales taking away from December and post-Christmas sales suffering from the Northeast blizzard. <br />
<br />
First things first, not all retailers have reported their results -- a majority of heavy hitters will report today. Nevertheless, the results are being described as "slow and steady" rather than the expected blowout holiday shopping season. For example, Costco (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/costco-wholesale-corporation/cost/nas" target="_blank">COST</a>) reported sales that increased 6%. This is positive data, unfortunately expectations called for an increase of 6.2%. Target (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys" target="_blank">TGT</a>) saw sales increase 0.9%, well short of the expected 4%. Of course sales were better at Macy's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys" target="_blank">M</a>), right? I mean they are adding jobs and all. Wrong, sales did increase (3.9%) but missed expectations (4.5%).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/06/holiday-sales-fall-short-of-expectations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Holiday Sales Falling Short of Expectations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/06/holiday-sales-fall-short-of-expectations/">Holiday Sales Falling Short of Expectations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. Many more quarterly reports from retailers are due this week, and by and large expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are high.</p>
<p>Walmart (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">WMT</a>), the king of retailers, is expected to buck the trend, though. Analysts anticipate that the Bentonville-based company will report that its third-quarter earnings grew only 6.7% year-over-year to 90 cents per share. During the three months that ended in October, Walmart announced an <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-announces-intent-to-acquire-south-africa-based-massmart/rfid371091986/?channel=pf" target="_blank">acquisition in South Africa</a> and kicked-off the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-announces-early-savings-on-toys-to-kick-off-holiday-shopping-season/rfid375966082/?channel=pf" target="_blank">holiday shopping season</a>, and revenue for that period is predicted to have risen 3.0% to $102.4 billion. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, analysts so far expect sequential and <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Year%20Over%20Year%20-%20YOY" target="_blank">year-over-year</a> growth of both earnings and revenue. Walmart results have not fallen short of consensus estimates in the past five quarters.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/14/week-in-preview-retailers-offer-up-earnings-wmt-anf-low-tgt/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Retailers Offer Up Earnings (WMT, ANF, LOW, TGT)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/14/week-in-preview-retailers-offer-up-earnings-wmt-anf-low-tgt/">Week in Preview: Retailers Offer Up Earnings (WMT, ANF, LOW, TGT)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 14 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. This afternoon, with about two hours to go before the market finishes for the day, the company's stock is down 1.3% to $24.89. That's not too far from the 52-week high of $26.03, and it is comfortably above the 52-week low of $15.34. <br />
<br />
The shares have had a bit of a ride over the last twelve months, as one can plainly see from the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/macy-s-inc/m/nys/tech-chart">chart</a>. Shareholders are, without a doubt, hoping that this latest run for the top portion of the graph will keep, and that a new trading range will assert itself.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/10/macys-down-on-q3-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Macy's Down on Q3 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/10/macys-down-on-q3-news/">Macy's Down on Q3 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 15:30:00 EST. <p>Macy's launched an <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/new-macyand-x2019-s-american-expressand-x00ae-card-provides-brand-new-privileges-and-benefits/rfid359357394/?channel=pf">American Express credit card</a> and increased <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/macyand-x2019-s-inc-adopts-new-mobile-technology/rfid366997165/?channel=pf">its mobile presence</a> during the fiscal fourth quarter. The analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast Macy's <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/" class="inlinked">earnings</a> for that period come to three cents per share, which compares to a net loss of three cents per share in the same period of last year. The Cincinnati-based department store operator is expected to post revenue of $5.6 billion for the three months that ended in October, which is 5.2% more than a year earlier. For the full year, the forecast calls for earnings of $1.50 per share (+6.7%) and $8.2 billion in revenue (+4.3%). Macy's earnings results have been better than expected in recent quarters by a penny or a few per share.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/07/week-in-preview-macys-priceline-retail-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Macy's, Priceline, Others Kick Off Retail Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/07/week-in-preview-macys-priceline-retail-earnings/">Week in Preview: Macy's, Priceline, Others Kick Off Retail Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 07 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. The era of the 'frugal consumer' and a surplus of store chains has led to triage-like conditions in the retail sector, as stores close and as some chains go out of business entirely.<br />
<br />
However, there are exceptions, and Macy's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>), first discussed here on <a href="http://%20http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/17/macys-considerable-potential-almost-as-much-risk/#continued">June 17, 2009</a> at a price of $11.23, is one. <br />
<br />
Macy's shares have rebounded from an over-correction in the summer, and pushed back above the $20 level. If you were patient this summer, will be rewarded with M.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/06/macy-s-uptrend-resumes-after-summer-break/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Macy's: Uptrend Resumes After Summer Break</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/06/macy-s-uptrend-resumes-after-summer-break/">Macy's: Uptrend Resumes After Summer Break</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST. Already, JCPenney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/penney-j-c-co-inc-holding-co/jcp/nys" class="inlinked">JCP</a>), Kohl's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/kohl-s-corporation/kss/nys" class="inlinked">KSS</a>) and Macy's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>) have posted earnings that topped consensus estimates, though the former two also offered disappointing guidance, and Nordstrom (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nordstrom-inc/jwn/nys">JWN</a>) met earnings expectations.</p>
<p>Many more retailers are scheduled to post their second-quarter results this week, including Walmart (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys" class="inlinked">WMT</a>), Abercrombie &amp; Fitch (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/abercrombie-and-fitch-co/anf/nys" class="inlinked">ANF</a>), and Dollar Tree Stores (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dollar-tree-inc/dltr/nas" class="inlinked">DLTR</a>), whose earnings expectations we'll take a closer look at here.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/15/earnings-preview-walmart-abercrombie-dollar-tree/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: Earnings from Walmart, Abercrombie and Other Retailers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/15/earnings-preview-walmart-abercrombie-dollar-tree/">The Week in Preview: Earnings from Walmart, Abercrombie and Other Retailers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 15 Aug 2010 12:30:00 EST. <p>JCPenney said growth of store and Internet sales, as well as tightly controlling expenses, resulted in record-level gross margins for the period. Macy's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>) is getting a healthy bid in response to the retailer's Q2 numbers. At least, that's what's happening at the time of this writing (hopefully, the stock can retain its green status through the closing bell). It's up over 4% to $20.23. Volume is rocking.<br />
<br />
I'm wary of this equity, though. It fooled me the last time. After the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/12/macys-improves-in-q1-is-it-a-buy/">Q1 report</a> was released near the middle of May, I thought it might be an interesting trade idea. It has slid ever since, as the following <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/macy-s-inc/m/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> indicates. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/11/macys-gets-a-bid-on-q2-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Macy's Gets a Bid on Q2 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/11/macys-gets-a-bid-on-q2-news/">Macy's Gets a Bid on Q2 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. Though the August meeting of the FOMC is generally uneventful, this time there is speculation about whether the FOMC will resort again to some <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/aug/06/us-jobs-fall-double-expected">quantitative easing</a> -- a way of pumping additional money into the financial system.</p>
<p>Fed chairman <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/investing/figuring-out-the-fed-what-will-bernanke-do/19566735/">Ben Bernanke</a> has already hinted at such a move, given that economic growth has clearly slowed. Last week's disappointing <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/nyse/july-jobs-report-rattles-stocks-and-renews-worry-over-faltering/19584135/">employment numbers</a> are the latest confirmation of that. The question is whether the Fed's decision to take action will happen at this week's meeting, perhaps <a href="http://imarketnews.com/?q=node/17594">aggravating deflation fears</a>, or it may wait until the September meeting, at which point it risks impacting the upcoming mid-term elections.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/08/the-week-in-preview-fomc-meeting-consumer-sentiment-retail-ea/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: FOMC Meeting, Consumer Sentiment, Retail Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/08/the-week-in-preview-fomc-meeting-consumer-sentiment-retail-ea/">The Week in Preview: FOMC Meeting, Consumer Sentiment, Retail Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 08 Aug 2010 12:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>), a retailer whose colleagues include The Gap Inc. The shares have been moved up to the overweight designation. Looks like good things may be in store for the chain.<br />
<br />
I recently discussed Macy's <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/12/macys-improves-in-q1-is-it-a-buy/">Q1 earnings</a>. Now, if you check that piece out, you'll see that I'm not a fan of buying the company to hold for years. If I wanted to do that, I would go with something like Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>), maybe Target Corporation (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys">TGT</a>).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/01/macys-gets-an-upgrade/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Macy's Gets an Upgrade</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/01/macys-gets-an-upgrade/">Macy's Gets an Upgrade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 01 Jun 2010 17:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>) is trading higher today. With a little less than two hours to go before the close of the regular session, the retailer, whose competitors include The Gap Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gap-inc-del/gps/nys">GPS</a>) and Kohl's Corporation (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/kohl-s-corporation/kss/nys">KSS</a>), was higher by 63 cents, or 2.6%, to $24.53. Volume was healthy.</p>
<p>The stock isn't far from the 52-week high of $25.25. The 52-week low is $10.27, so the equity has come a long way since it was stuck in the doldrums. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/macy-s-inc/m/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> shows a reasonably attractive uptrend. Earlier today, the company reported its Q1 numbers. How did they look?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/12/macys-improves-in-q1-is-it-a-buy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Macy's Improves in Q1: Is It a Buy?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/12/macys-improves-in-q1-is-it-a-buy/">Macy's Improves in Q1: Is It a Buy?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 12 May 2010 17:30:00 EST.
