Gold and silver favorites from resource experts

With gold and silver prices testing new highs, we turn to several leading resource experts -- Mary Anne and Pamela Aden, Mark Skousen and Larry Edelson -- for their favorite plays in the sector.

In The Aden Forecast, the Aden sisters explain, "Gold and silver recently moved well into record high territory, and it looks like they are poised to head even higher.

"Most impressive, gold's leading indicator still has room to rise further before it reaches the high area. This tells us that gold's current C rise is very strong and it's now likely headed to our next target level near $1200. Meanwhile, December gold will remain super strong above $1,020.

Income from AllianceBerstein (AB)

"Our latest high-dividend stock pick is AllianceBernstein (NYSE: AB), a leading global money manager," says Mark Skousen.

In his premium service, High-Income Alert, he explains, "The company offers mutual funds, structured products, and managed accounts to corporations, endowments, institutions, and government agencies.

"Of course, asset managers collect fees based on the quantity of assets under management. As asset values decline, so do net fees. And, needless to say, with the haircut that world bond and equity markets have taken during the past two years, sales and earnings at AllianceBerstein have fallen.

WMS Industries (WMS): 'A good bet' in gaming

"The smart move in today's market is to stick with companies that are growing right through the recession, such as WMS Industries (NYSE: WMS)," says Mark Skousen.

In his trading oriented service, The Hedge Fund Trader Alert, he explains, "Based in Waukegan, Ill., WMS designs, manufactures, leases and sells gaming machines and video lottery terminals to its customers, the casino operators.

Yet, in his premium Hedge Fund Trader service, the leading advisor ranks the bank as a speculative buy. Here's his review.

Urban Outfitters (URBN): Dressed for success?

"Stocks have struggled lately after their huge recovery; still, I continue to see opportunities, and I especially like Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ: URBN)," says Mark Skousen in The Turnaround Alert.

"Urban Outfitters, the apparel retailer, after it beat Wall Street analysts' estimates. Two years ago, the stock was selling for $37 a share.

"But today, it's selling for nearly half that. During the deep recession, retailers have seen sales drop as consumers cut back on spending for clothing and other discretionary purchases. As a result, retail apparel stocks fell sharply.

"Asia is booming again, and one industry that is growing like wildfire is 'green' tech in China," says Mark Skousen. In The Turnaround Alert, he eyes China Green Agriculture (AMEX: CGA)."

"Urban population and demand for energy is exploding, causing pollution and a reduction in per capita arable land to feed 1.4 billion Chinese.

"One way to profit is to buy China Green Agriculture, one of the fastest-growing agricultural technology companies in China.

Motorola (MOT) : 'Classic tech turnaround'

"I now believe some bargains are developing among technology stocks," says growth stock expert Mark Skousen. In his specialized trading service, The Turnaround Trader, he adds, "Motorola (NYSE: MOT) is a fallen tech leader that may even rise in a bear market -- and has a chance to double or triple once the market turns around."

Skousen expplains, "Technology stocks appear to have bottomed and are moving higher. Motorola, the $8-billion mobile ohone manufacturer, is in the midst of a classic turnaround situation.

"It used to be the cell phone technology leader, having developed the world's first handheld cellular phone and technical standard for high-definition TV. Yet the stock has fallen nearly 70% from its lofty highs of $26 a share two years ago.

General Electric: Four reasons to buy

"We're going to revisit a stock we've traded in the past: General Electric (NYSE: GE)," says growth & Income expert Mark Skousen.

In his specialty yield-oriented advisory service -- High Income Alert -- he asks, "Why buy a stock scraping the bottom?" Here, the leading advisor offers four reasons behind this new recommendation.

"GE, of course, is a global leader in appliances, aviation, healthcare, transportation, energy, water technologies, cable, film, consumer electronics, lighting, electrical distribution and finance.

"The U.S. economy is in the dumpster right now, so it's no surprise to find GE there, too. From a high of more than $40 a little more than a year ago, GE trades near its 52-week low today. And we see four good reasons to buy.

Barnes & Noble (BKS): Big buyers offer a bullish read

"Last spring, CEO Leonard Riggio of Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) purchased almost $50 million-worth of his company's stock between $27-29.50; today, it languishes on the remainder table at $17.56," says Mark Skousen.

In his income-oriented speciality service, High Income Alert, the advisor says, "Now, a billionaire has also taken a stake." Here's the advisor's update.

"Barnes & Noble is a worthy addition to our model portfolio. Trading well below the level that the CEO purchased shares, we consider the stock a bargain.

"Barnes & Noble owns the nation's largest chain of bookstores, with 800 stores in 50 states. It also owns one of the Web's most-visited Web sites, bn.com. Between its stores and Web site, Barnes and Noble sells more than 300 million books a year.

Top Stock Picks '09: Gladstone Capital (GLAD)

This post is part of a special annual report -- Top Stock Picks '09 -- in which TheStockAdvisors.com asked 75 leading newsletter advisors to select their favorite investment for the new year.

"I've followed Gladstone Capital (NASDAQ: GLAD) for many years," says Mark Skousen in Forecasts & Strategies. Here, he chooses the business development company as a top idea for 2009.

"Gladstone is a business development company (BDC) run by the 'father of BDCs,' David Gladstone. Gladstone is a conservative investor who is careful in his lending.

"His investment company, Gladstone Capital, specializes in debt investments in small- and medium-sized companies that seek additional funding, recapitalization, debt reduction, and short-term bridge financing.

"Unlike other BDCs, Gladstone always has been prudent in its lending. It has no exposure to subprime mortgages and no exposure to home building -- but it is being hurt by U.S. recession fears.

"Though the shares are volatile, I think the stock is dirt cheap, having suffered a sharp sell-off due to the deep recession and financial crisis.

"It is off 70% so far this year, which is far too much, in my judgment. With any kind of economic recovery under an Obama administration, I expect Gladstone to be back in good form.

Top Stock Picks '09: Freeport McMoRan (FCX)

This post is part of a special annual report -- Top Stock Picks '09 -- in which TheStockAdvisors.com asked 75 leading newsletter advisors to select their favorite investment for the new year.

Growth stock expert Mark Skousen looks to the commodity sector for a favorite idea for 2009. In his specialty advisory service, The Turnaround Trader, he explains, "While the market continues to be volatile, we believe Freeport McMoRan (NYSE: FCX) offers an opportunity for profit."

Skousen continues, "Industrial commodities have been beaten down in the face of a deep, global recession. Aluminum was $1.50 a pound a year ago, and is now down to 66 cents. Copper was more than $4 a pound last year, and recently fell to $1.40.

"But the outlook for commodities is changing quickly with all the talk of bailouts, stimulus, and easy money.

"Aluminum, copper, and other base metals have risen recently on the news that President-elect Barack Obama has pledged 'substantial' spending to fix and add buildings, roads and bridges as a way to revive the economy.

"And then there's China. The world's largest emerging market recently committed to stimulating domestic growth, and announced plans to purchase 1 million tons of base metal for about $3 billion. China's massive stimulus plan, combined with Obama's, could be enough to reignite the commodities boom.
