Newspaper wrap-up 6-20-07: Kerkorian deal for the Bellagio off

MAJOR PAPERS:
  • The Wall Street Journal reported that Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE: TM), which launched a factory-building blitz five years ago, is now being urged by senior members of the founding family to stop building factories in the United States on fears it will hurt the company's efficiency.
  • Kirk Kerkorian, who controls MGM Mirage (NYSE: MGM), had planned to buy the Bellagio Hotel and Casino and the $7.4B Project City Center from MGM. But that deal now appears to be off, according to the Wall Street Journal.
OTHER PAPERS:

"Would you like that in paper or . . . paper?"

Most of you have probably heard about the local ordinance that will ban the use of petroleum-based plastic bags in the city of San Francisco. Reports state that the measure is likely to pass with the Mayor's signature. I will refrain from stating any opinion on whether I think the move is good or bad. What I want to mention about the likely change in West Coast grocery bag options is that I think this provides an opportunity for the snatching of some timely investments.

Quick! Find those companies that produce brown kraft paper roll stock and get a little chunk of them. When the bag measure passes, those companies might get a nice boost. You may wish to consider subsidiaries of (privately held) Koch Industries, International Paper (NYSE: IP), Kimberly-Clark (NYSE: KMB) or possibly Domtar (NYSE: DTC) (Toronto:DTC). On the local level, find the companies that are manufacturing brown paper bags for the West Coast market.

It is my personal opinion that this change in bag material usage will catch on fast, most especially on the coasts. Look into the shopping bag manufacturing field with a critical eye and watch this situation closely. If it looks like this shopping bag pony is going to "break out of the gate," I have a sneaking suspicion that this will be one pony that you want to ride!

Dick Parsons for NY mayor -- would you vote for him?

Dick Parsons for New York City mayor? A few weeks ago, I picked out an interesting tidbit in a story on why Parsons should be fired: Gramercy Capital Management's Joan Lappin dribbled the tantalizing rumor that the Time Warner CEO was considering a run for mayor when Michael Bloomberg's term is up in 2009.

Today's New York Magazine says "it's all but official." Parsons will run, with some insiders even saying he'll hand over the CEO position to Bewkes (Lappin said this, too) before his current contract ends in 2008. Naturally Parsons has said he'll fulfill his contract, but not opined on the mayoral run.

Frank Barnako of MarketWatch says this must be why Carl Icahn is buying up shares of Time Warner, while DealBreaker.com says Parsons entrance into the race "is not entirely unwelcome" and hints that the I-banking elite might vote for him. Would you?
