After test-marketing iced coffee and cappuccinos in various markets, McDonald's is ready to take its rivalry with Starbucks to the next level by rolling out a <a href="http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?id=26542&amp;seenIt=1">makeover of all its U.S. restaurants by 2009 to feature specialty beverages</a> such as coffee drinks, smoothies, energy drinks, and other bottled beverages. </p>
<p>Specialty drinks have higher profit margins than sandwiches, and McDonald's estimates this "Made for You" campaign could boost sales by as much as $1 billion a year. Results from test markets in which the plan has already been tried suggest that it doesn't require additional staff and that it doesn't slow down service, but counters and drive-thru areas do have to be remodeled to make room for new equipment. Some franchisees are concerned about the costs of such renovations.</p>
<p>This has to be better news for McDonald's investors and watchers than <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/mcdonalds-stock-drops-following-moodys/n20070927134009990010">Moody's downgrade of McDonald's</a> last week due in part to competition and labor and energy costs. Shares fell 54 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $54.26 after the Moody's announcement, but closed Sept. 28 at $54.47. On the other hand, a <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/sector-wrap-restaurants-mixed/n20070927154209990038">Goldman Sachs analyst has McDonald's as a top pick</a> in the otherwise mixed restaurant sector, for its global strength. <a href="http://sbux.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/27/analyst-downgrades-sbux-eat-hway-and-flr/">Starbucks was downgraded</a> last week as well.</p>

But there are some pretty close races as well, so let's take a peek at those.</p>
<p>As of this writing, the one match-up that's simply too close to call is <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/09/mcdonalds-vs-burger-king-battle-of-the-brands/">McDonald's vs. Burger King</a>, or as the post on that match-up puts it, the Hamburglar vs. the Creepy King. So if you're tired of voting for or against Sanjaya, why not stop in here for something a little different.</p>
<p>Both the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/07/starbucks-vs-dunkin-donuts-the-story-of-ralph-and-serge/">Starbucks vs. Dunkin' Donuts</a> and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/08/hellmanns-vs-kraft-mayonnaise-battle-of-the-brands/">Kraft vs. Hellmann's</a> match-ups have received quite a few votes, nearly 400 each, from what I suppose must be the coffee and sandwich crowd. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/starbucks-corporation/sbux/nas">Starbucks</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/starbucks-corporation/sbux/nas">SBUX</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc-cl-a/kft/nys">Kraft </a>(NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc-cl-a/kft/nys">KFT</a>) have slight leads, with less than 60% of their respective votes.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/13/haagen-dazs-vs-ben-and-jerrys-battle-of-the-brands/">Haagen-Dazs vs. Ben &amp; Jerry's</a> match-up has received more than 500 votes so far (how decadent of you), and defenders of each brand have spoken up in the comments. Other match-ups attracting discussion in comments include <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/13/southwest-vs-jetblue-battle-of-the-brands/">Southwest vs. JetBlue</a> and <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/11/whole-foods-vs-trader-joes-battle-of-the-brands/">Whole Foods vs. Trader Joe's</a>. So check them out and let your opinion be heard. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southwest-airlines-co/luv/nys">Southwest Airlines</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/southwest-airlines-co/luv/nys">LUV</a>) has a slight lead in its match-up, but all three of these remain close.</p>
<p>Another close one is <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/14/home-depot-vs-lowes-battle-of-the-brands/">Home Depot vs. Lowe's</a>, with the latter showing a slight lead as of this writing, but that match-up was one of the mostly recent posted, so things could change shortly as you do-it-yourselfers come out of the woodwork to cast your votes. Abercrombie also has a small lead in its <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/07/the-gap-or-abercrombie-and-fitch-who-is-more-tragically-hip/">match-up with the Gap</a>. Is <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/abercrombie-and-fitch-co-a/anf/nys">Abercrombie &amp; Fitch</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/abercrombie-and-fitch-co-a/anf/nys">ANF</a>) really hipper?</p>
<p>While all these are close races right now, the polls are still open, and vote tallies are rising fast. Anything could happen. Be sure and let us know which brands you prefer by voting in our reader polls, and we'd love to hear why you're loyal to your favorites in the comments of any of our <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/battle-of-the-brands/">Battle of the Brands</a> posts.</p>
<p>A Battle of the Brands bonus: BloggingStocks blogger <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/bloggers/tom-barlow/">Tom Barlow</a> has shared a few thoughts on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/13/battle-of-the-brands-sweeping-up-afterward/">other possible Battle of the Brands match-ups</a>.
