Then, Goldman Sachs (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>) reported earnings were down 52%. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters foresee strong reports from such big names as Apple (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas" class="inlinked">AAPL</a>), eBay (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas" class="inlinked">EBAY</a>), IBM (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/international-business-machines-corporation/ibm/nys">IBM</a>), General Electric (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys" class="inlinked">GE</a>), Google (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>), Schlumberger (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/schlumberger-ltd-netherlands-antilles/slb/nys" class="inlinked">SLB</a>) and Southwest Airlines (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/southwest-airlines-co/luv/nys" class="inlinked">LUV</a>). And fast on the heels of last week's <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/jpmorgan-earnings-the-return-of-big-bank-profits/19801174/">big earnings beat</a> from JPMorgan Chase (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys" class="inlinked">JPM</a>), there will be plenty more results from the financial sector to peruse this week.</p>
<p>Among the financials expected to post double-digit earnings growth this week are Capital One Financial (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/capital-one-financial-corporation/cof/nys" class="inlinked">COF</a>), Morgan Stanley (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/morgan-stanley/ms/nys" class="inlinked">MS</a>), SLM Corp. (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/slm-corporation/slm/nys">SLM</a>) and U.S. Bancorp (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/us-bancorp-del/usb/nys" class="inlinked">USB</a>), but the week's biggest earnings winner may be Wells Fargo (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys" class="inlinked">WFC</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/16/week-in-preview-banks-in-the-earnings-spotlight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Banks in the Earnings Spotlight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/16/week-in-preview-banks-in-the-earnings-spotlight/">Week in Preview: Banks in the Earnings Spotlight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 16 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. For example, according to a <a href="http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/01/13/groupon-readies-for-an-i-p-o/"><em>New York Times</em> report</a>, it looks like Groupon is in the process of talking to various Wall Street bankers to prep for a public offering.</p>
<p>Founded just a couple years ago, the company has grown like a weed. The website provides daily deals, which are at steep discounts. But Groupon actually gets half of the cut. Yes, it's a lucrative business as revenues reached $1 billion last year. Already Groupon is in 35 countries.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/14/groupon-ipo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Groupon Revs Up for an IPO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/14/groupon-ipo/">Groupon Revs Up for an IPO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. The final piece of the economic puzzle is for the jobs market to start showing strong gains and the final piece of the puzzle for the stock market is for financial stocks to stage a big and sustainable rally. We might be right on the precipice of both of those things happening. Investors still have an opportunity, however, to get in on the ground floor in a number of names.</p>
<p>The most compelling name in this space could be Morgan Stanley (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/morgan-stanley/ms/nys" class="inlinked">MS</a>), which has found itself on the back burner this year, particularly compared to Goldman Sachs (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys" class="inlinked">GS</a>). While both stocks have struggled in 2010, GS is going to finish the year on a high note. In the last six months, the shares have risen nearly 21% compared to a gain for MS of under 1%.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/16/morgan-stanley-could-have-big-upside/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Morgan Stanley Could Have Big Upside</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/16/morgan-stanley-could-have-big-upside/">Morgan Stanley Could Have Big Upside</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 11:30:00 EST. The British firm received an <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/07/u-s-stock-futures-higher-as-obama-agrees-to-extend-tax-cuts/" target="_blank">upgrade</a> to overweight from underweight by brokerage firm Morgan Stanley, which <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/unilever-raised-to-overweight-at-morgan-stanley-2010-12-07" target="_blank">stated</a>, "We double upgrade Unilever to overweight, as we see the risk/reward profile for the shares as more attractive now than at any point in the past three years."</p>
<p>I am not going to agree or disagree with the decision for the upgrade right now; I want to take a look at the equity's chances to further this rally (at more than 3% as of this writing). There is evidence for both the continuation and the stall of the rally</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/07/unilever-double-upgrade/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Unilever Receives a Double Upgrade</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/07/unilever-double-upgrade/">Unilever Receives a Double Upgrade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 12:30:00 EST. On that day alone, banks borrowed a record $155.8 billion.</p>
<p>The Fed had set up a lending facility called the Primary Dealer Credit Facility (PDCF) to lend money to banks. As the crisis spread, borrowing increased almost daily. Already some buyers, like Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FMCC), have enjoyed some success returning defective mortgages. And this could be just the beginning.</p>
<p>The banks, of course, are fighting vigorously to fend off these demands. As usual, the courts will have to settle the matter. The focus of the debate seems to be founded on the issue of representations and warranties that may or may not have been violated.</p>
<p>There are no surprises among the 11 banks mentioned. It is the conspicuous absence of names you might expect to find that is.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/26/chasing-value-banks-barrons-and-buffett/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Banks, Barron's and Buffett</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/26/chasing-value-banks-barrons-and-buffett/">Chasing Value: Banks, Barron's and Buffett</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 26 Nov 2010 10:00:00 EST. <br />
I say stay away. First and foremost, investors should take note of the fact that most IPO's end up as losing propositions. In the case of Tesla, which lost over $55.7 million last year and will lose more this year, the bleeding has just begun.<br />
<br />
The car manufacturing business is very capital intensive and Tesla only hopes to stem the tide in 2012 when it projects a production run of 20,000 Model S all electric sedans for $50,000 each.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/29/tesla-ipo-hot-stock-or-portfolio-shock/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tesla IPO: Hot Stock or Portfolio Shock?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/29/tesla-ipo-hot-stock-or-portfolio-shock/">Tesla IPO: Hot Stock or Portfolio Shock?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 15:40:00 EST. The brokerage house believes that 3M will rally after an optimistic forecast from Danaher (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/danaher-corporation/dhr/nys" target="_blank">DHR</a>), which operates in many of the same markets as 3M. The broker believes that the stock will enjoy a nice <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/3m-shares-top-blue-chip-advancers-2010-03-30" target="_blank">30-day run thanks to DHR's forecast</a>. <br />
<br />
The thing is, if the stock continues the performance it started in early 2009 -- we shouldn't need a brokerage to tell us that the stock will do well during the next 30 days. Shares of 3M have advanced along the double-barreled support of its 10- and 20-month trendlines. The last time the equity finished a week below both of these trendlines was more than a year ago.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/30/3m-company-enjoys-a-solid-day/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>3M Company Enjoys a Solid Day</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/30/3m-company-enjoys-a-solid-day/">3M Company Enjoys a Solid Day</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 30 Mar 2010 16:40:00 EST. So, in the first half of 2009, they issued stock. More than half the new shares to come out worldwide in those six months were <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=amySc2iSiW9c&amp;pos=1">issued by banks and brokers</a>. All this stock, of course, translated to fees for investment banks. In a strange way, consequently, the financial industry healed itself.<br />
<br />
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=amySc2iSiW9c&amp;pos=1">According to Bloomberg</a>, investment banking fees surged 13% in 2009, from $53.1 billion to $59.8 billion. This is still far short of the $86.9 billion record set in 2007, but it's at least a step in the right direction. Even with the surge of bank and broker shares issued in the first two quarters last year, total activity was still lower than in 2008.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/04/jpmorgan-leads-in-year-bankers-make-money-on-each-other/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>JPMorgan Leads in Year Bankers Make Money on Each Other</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/04/jpmorgan-leads-in-year-bankers-make-money-on-each-other/">JPMorgan Leads in Year Bankers Make Money on Each Other</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 04 Mar 2010 11:40:00 EST. The pressure to secure big clients and to bring the greatest trading profits is enormous.</p>
<p>Right now, Goldman Sachs (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>) and JPMorgan Chase (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>) lead the industry in trading. Goldman has high-speed trading, which generates the largest profits per trade on Wall Street. Naturally, clients are attracted to Goldman because they can give them the best executions and generate the biggest profits in their managed accounts.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/01/morgan-stanley-is-hiring-hundreds-of-traders/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Morgan Stanley Is Hiring Hundreds of Traders</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/01/morgan-stanley-is-hiring-hundreds-of-traders/">Morgan Stanley Is Hiring Hundreds of Traders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 13:30:00 EST.
