Closing Bell: Bull-Bear, down to the wire... (BP, CSCO, EMC, NVAX, SEPR, VG)

Today would have been an exciting day with positive and mixed economic data, a big draw in oil inventories, and the FOMC minutes coming out. But the trading volume is drying up as the A-Team traders are throwing in the towel and not coming back to work until next Tuesday. This was one of those days where there was no feel for an up or down day literally until right at the closing bell.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 9,277.27 -33.33 (-0.36%)
S&P 500 994.53 -3.51 (-0.35%)
Nasdaq 1,966.70 -2.19 (-0.11%)

Closing Bell: The pullback with no sting (ALU, AMZN, BA, CROX, CHK, LVS, NVAX)

Ben Bernanke tried to talk up the markets today in light of reports that ten of nineteen banks under the stress test needed capital. Bernanke said that a recovery does lie ahead and that housing is near a bottom. At the end of the day, it was hard to get any feeling for gains or profit taking.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 8,410.65 -16.09 (-0.19%)
S&P 500 903.80 -3.44 (-0.38%)

Don't fear the swine flu . . . trade it

I remember Toronto during SARS. As one of the harder hit areas, it was not a happy place. It was the end of winter, but that miserable, cold winter just didn't want to end. People walked the streets in a gloomy haze, afraid to take the subway and giving dirty looks to anyone brazen enough to cough in public. Worse, I couldn't even visit a friend in the hospital. All things considered though, in global pandemic terms, it was over relatively quickly. Let's hope swine flu will be the same.

In the meantime, let's put on our investors hats and see what's in store for some stocks:

Travel and tourist stocks
This is one of the worst hit areas, especially airlines, as people may cancel their travel plans. For example, AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) traded over 9 percent lower an hour after the open. Royal Caribbean Cruises (NYSE: RCL) was down over 15 percent. In fact UBS downgraded these airlines and hotels this morning: AMR, Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL), Host Hotels and Resorts (NYSE: HST), Lasalle Hotel Properties (NYSE: LHO), Marriott (NYSE: MAR), United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAUA), US Airways (NYSE: LCC). Carnival Cruise Lines (NYSE: CCL) also declined considerably. Best to stay away from the sector.

Pre-market movers

LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK) is up 16% on news of a new contract with Q-Cells.

Novavax (NASDAQ: NVAX) is trading up 12% on a partnership with GE (NYSE: GE)'s healthcare group.

Hemispherx Biopharma (AMEX: HEB) is off 20% on a terminated license agreement with Esteve.

Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) is moving down almost 4% on a downgrade from Jefferies & Co.

Stocks may trade differently in the pre-market than they do in the regular session.
