We'll find out whether there's been any movement on that front when employment data for January comes out this week. The <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Challenger%20Job-Cut%20Report">Challenger Job-Cut</a> report and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/ADP%20National%20Employment%20Report">ADP employment data</a> are due Wednesday, and the government's unemployment rate on Friday. Another mild increase in jobs is expected, in line with the three-month average, but not enough to significantly reduce the unemployment rate.</p>
<p>Also look for the ISM <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/ISM%20Manufacturing%20Index">manufacturing</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/ISM%20Non-Manufacturing%20Index">nonmanufacturing</a> indexes this week, as well as the Chicago <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Purchasing%20Managers%20Index%20-%20PMI">PMI</a> and the New York <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/National%20Association%20of%20Purchasing%20Management%20Chicago%20-%20NAPM%20Chicago">NAPM</a> index. And Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will speak to the National Press Club on Thursday.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/30/week-in-preview-january-employment-data-ups-earnings-and-more/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: January Employment Data, UPS Earnings and More</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/30/week-in-preview-january-employment-data-ups-earnings-and-more/">Week in Preview: January Employment Data, UPS Earnings and More</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 30 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. <p>For example, year-over-year earnings growth from big oil Chevron (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/chevron-corporation/cvx/nys" class="inlinked">CVX</a>), ConocoPhillips (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/conocophillips/cop/nys" class="inlinked">COP</a>), ExxonMobil (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/exxon-mobil-corporation/xom/nys" class="inlinked">XOM</a>) and Royal Dutch Shell (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/royal-dutch-shell-plc-cl-a/rds.a/nys" class="inlinked">RDS.A</a>) are expected to be in double digits. Just look at Novellus (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/novellus-systems-inc/nvls/nas">NVLS</a>). In its latest quarterly <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2010/07/12/novellus-earnings-report-markets-equities-semiconductor.html?boxes=marketschannelnews">report</a>, the company beat expectations as the stock price is up over 3% to $27.47. Actually, the stock has roughly doubled over the past year. And in light of the rebound in the market, the momentum is likely to continue.<br />

<span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says you take your life into your own hands if you fade the opening in today's market. </span><br /><br /> A year ago with the futures up, all you could think of is how much you wanted to "fade" that opening, how great it would be just to lay out any shorts into strength. You could choose pretty much anything going into earnings season. <br /><br /> The techs? Last good quarter. The banks? A travesty. You didn't even know if the banks you are short would survive. The oils? Free fall. The metals? Amazing downward pressure coming from hedge fund redemptions. The insurers? Will they make it? Retail? The balance sheets looked terrible going into what would be a terrible holiday selling season. The autos and auto-related? Disaster. <p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/12/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-its-a-mistake-to-fade-em-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: It's a mistake to fade 'em now </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/12/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-its-a-mistake-to-fade-em-now/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: It's a mistake to fade 'em now </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 09:50:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the diamonds in the rough don't get much press, but they're the real heroes in this market. </span><br /><br /> The troubled airline industry. The troubled auto industry. Have they ever not been "troubled"? For as long as I have been in this business, these two industries have been in huge trouble. Yet somehow it is news that <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ual-corporation/uaua/nas">United</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/ual-corporation/uaua/nas">UAUA</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=UAUA" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/amr-corporation/amr/nys">AMR</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/amr-corporation/amr/nys">AMR</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=AMR" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/delta-air-lines-inc-del/dal/nys">Delta</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/delta-air-lines-inc-del/dal/nys">DAL</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=DAL" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>) are in trouble. Somehow we're still sweating the auto program -- and I, for one, thought Steve Rattner was doing a pretty good job and don't want to read into his resignation because too many times in my life I have seen the smear and know it for what it is. <br /><br /> I want to talk about the industries that aren't troubled. Last night <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/csx-corporation/csx/nys">CSX</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/csx-corporation/csx/nys">CSX</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=CSX" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>) reported a hugely profitable quarter despite a big decline in revenues. At one point the rail industry was a hugely troubled industry and you used to worry about the companies swinging to big losses every downturn. Now CSX gets 6 inches of ink today and the deeply troubled airline industry gets reams.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/14/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-the-good-stories-are-still-worth-menti/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: The good stories are still worth mentioning </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/14/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-the-good-stories-are-still-worth-menti/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: The good stories are still worth mentioning </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 10:00:00 EST. Although this loss was three cents wider than the consensus estimate, the shares managed to bounce off their after-hours lows -- thanks mainly to NVLS's forecast. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/14/novellus-posts-larger-than-anticipated-second-quarter-loss/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Novellus posts larger-than-anticipated second-quarter loss</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/14/novellus-posts-larger-than-anticipated-second-quarter-loss/">Novellus posts larger-than-anticipated second-quarter loss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 08:30:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says an earnings surprise from Philips, like Alcoa last week, didn't do much to put markets in gear. </span><br /><br /> Upside surprise No. 2, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/koninklijke-philips-electronics/phg/nys">Philips</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/koninklijke-philips-electronics/phg/nys">PHG</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=PHG" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>), doesn't seem to do anything more than upside surprise No. 1, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/alcoa-inc/aa/nys">Alcoa</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/alcoa-inc/aa/nys">AA</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=AA" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>). That's right, we got a quick run-up for Philips when it reported a nice profit, but no follow-through from the rest of the markets in Europe after this electronics company reported. <br /><br /> Why should there be, though? Philips might as well have said "this profit is a sham" from the commentary it put out --more firings, numbers down huge from last year, terrible outlook.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/13/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-earnings-surprises-why-should-they/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: Earnings surprises -- why should they matter? </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/13/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-earnings-surprises-why-should-they/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: Earnings surprises -- why should they matter? </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 10:00:00 EST. <p><a></a>Wall Street expectations for tech stocks are fairly optimistic. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial are looking for chip maker <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/altera-corporation/altr/nas">Altera Corp.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/altera-corporation/altr/nas">ALTR</a>) and software/service company <a href="http://finance.aol.com/company/igate-corporation/igte/nas">iGate Corp.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/company/igate-corporation/igte/nas">IGTE</a>) to be the sector's biggest earnings gainers of the week. Altera had previously <a href="http://www.rttnews.com/ArticleView.aspx?Id=699931&amp;Category=Breaking%20News">forecast flat sales</a> for the quarter, and shares fell to a 52-week low last week. iGate is expected to report earnings of 14 cents per share (up 42.9%) on revenue of $55.6 million. India-based iGate recently spun off its <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/mastech-holdings-inc-completes-spin-off/rfid144843863">Mastech consulting services</a>. Shares are down 45.0% in the past three months, and also reached a new 52-week low last week.</p>
