Eliot Spitzer, who crusaded against corporate malfeasance, apparently lived in a glass house. He should immediately resign in the wake of his near-admission that he was caught up in a reported prostitution scandal.

Spitzer made a somewhat perfunctory televised mea culpa, saying, "I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public, to whom I promised better... I am disappointed that I failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself."

That's just not good enough.

Spitzer, who reports allege is AKA Client 9, was captured on a federal wiretap, "confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a room," according to the New York Times, which broke the story. He was no passive victim here.

The irony here is inescapable. Spitzer made a national name for himself crusading against the evils of Wall Street. He had a knack for getting some of the biggest companies in the world including Merrill Lynch & Co. There are several catalysts behind this move:

First, exchange shares were hit harder than most during the broader market decline in late February. Fundamentally, however, the short-term market dip is unlikely to have a major impact on revenues at NYSE. In fact, trading volume on the exchange actually surged to near-record levels during that decline -- and higher volumes spell more fees for NYX.

It also helps that the company is now completing its planned takeover of Europe's Euronext. The tender offer for Euronext ended in late March, and NYX announced it currently controls more than 92% of Euronext shares. Over the next three years, NYX believes it can extract some 293 million euros ($385 million) from the deal in the form of cost savings and other synergies. In addition, the deal will also facilitate trans-Atlantic trading in stocks and options. Many see the deal as a major positive, and a potential growth avenue for NYX.

Continue reading NYX's rebound is all about the growth

NYX's rebound is all about the growth originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 03 Apr 2007 10:47:00 EST. A few weeks ago, I picked out an interesting tidbit in a story on why Parsons should be fired: Gramercy Capital Management's Joan Lappin dribbled the tantalizing rumor that the Time Warner CEO was considering a run for mayor when Michael Bloomberg's term is up in 2009.

Today's New York Magazine says "it's all but official." Parsons will run, with some insiders even saying he'll hand over the CEO position to Bewkes (Lappin said this, too) before his current contract ends in 2008.
