Chasing Value: Newcastle Shares Flying off the Shelf

One of my bargain basement stock picks (thank you Sir John Templeton) is flying off the shelf today and has been for a month. Newcastle Investment Corp. (NCT) was one of last years successful picks. It is trading up today almost 10% as I write this at 3:30 PM, EDT

I have written before about picking up this as a penny stock for 60 cents a share amidst the market panic of days gone by, now sitting on over 500% gains, and still counting as the stock is currently trading at $3.77 -- yikes! . (update: $3.84 +11.95% final)

I rarely dabble in penny stocks but Newcastle is a CMBS player with very diversified real estate interests that I have been following since it was trading near $20 per share and paying a double digit yield.

Earnings highlights: Wal-Mart, JCPenney, MBIA, Deere, Applied Materials and others

Here are some highlights from this past week's earnings coverage from BloggingStocks:

Albany Molecular Research Inc. (NASDAQ: AMRI) topped estimates and raised its full-year guidance.
Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT) Q3 earnings and revenues tumbled but beat low expectations.
Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE) fell short of Q3 earnings expectations due to rising materials costs.
Estee Lauder Cos. Inc. (NYSE: EL) posted strong Q4 results that led shares to a new 52-week high.
Fossil Inc. (NASDAQ: FOSL) posted better-than-expected Q2 earnings and lifted its full-year forecast.
JCPenney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) Q2 profit slipped but still topped analysts' expectations.
LDK Solar Ltd. (NYSE: LDK) Q2 net income soared, easily beating analysts' estimates.
Liz Claiborne Inc. (NYSE: LIZ) rebounded from its tumble after its disappointing Q2 report.
MBIA Inc. (NYSE: MBI) posted strong Q2 results despite downgrades of its financial ratings.
Newcastle Investments Corp. (NYSE: NCT) despite negative earnings, it announced a quarterly dividend.
Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) posted dismal Q2 results and announced a share buyback program.
Sysco Corp. (NYSE: SYY) Q4 earnings topped expectaitons on demand for bulk food products.
TJX Cos. (NYSE: TJX) strong Q2 results fell short of expectations, as did the Q3 earnings forecast.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) topped Q2 estimates due to bargain seekers and international sales.

Also, Jim Cramer warns against bearishness on the financials and also suggests that the collapse of commodities will buoy earings.

Chasing Value: Newcastle announces dividend

Checking on one of my big calls of the year:Newcastle Investments (NYSE: NCT), which is down significantly so far through mid June, it is nice to see that a dividend will be paid for this past quarter of $0.25 per share. This amounts to a current yield of over 12%.

I started writing about NCT last November when I posted Chasing Value: Newcastle's 21.9% yield too good to be true?.

In late December I made it one of my Chasing Value: Final list -- 8 stocks for 2008.

Some would say it was to good to be true as the stock price drifted downward and the dividend was cut. I maintain that this is just a waiting game until the real estate market migrates back to a more sure footing while you collect a healthy dividend.

Most advisers would remind investors not to try and catch a falling knife and I would agree, but at some point there is real value and I have taken several "stabs" at this one trying to dollar cost average while a I wait.

Chasing Value: February review -- 8 stocks for 2008 -- testing my 'metal'

Two months into the year and investors' true 'metal' was tested, and mine more than most. February showed signs of improvement over January, but the last week ended hopes of any rally. The last day of January saw a 370 point drop in the Dow and February's last trading day closed with similar results, down 315 points.

The soft stock market did display many points worth noting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was about break even for the month, indicating investors were showing some signs of support for large cap stocks, prompted in part by news of increased profits at Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and share buy-backs at IBM Corp (NYSE: IBM).

I cannot say the same for the other major indices, NASDAQ Composite Index and Standard & Poor's 500 Index, which dropped significantly last month.

Some of my picks also sagged a little more, although not as much, while two turned into positive territory. In January, only Raytheon Co. (NYSE: RTN), the high tech, defense contractor, was up. In February, the weak dollar and inflation concerns boosted Anglo American plc (ADR) and Reliance Steel & Aluminum (NYSE: RS) -- two commodity plays.
