(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nwsa/nas">NWSA</a> - <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nwsa/nas/option-chains">option chain</a>) shares are off a bit today after a company official said at a conference that the company is <a target="_blank" href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/16/us-newscorp-gaming-idUSTRE72F4EF20110316">planning to build its own social-gaming business</a>, hoping to capitalize on the momentum of smaller gaming start-ups like FarmVille maker Zynga. The NWSA official said the social-gaming effort will not be connected to its social network site MySpace, which the company is considering selling. So far this morning, investors are not too optimistic about this news. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on NWSA.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/16/news-corp-plans-social-gaming-business/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>News Corp. (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">NWS</a>) competes with other media conglomerates like The Walt Disney Company (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>), CBS Corporation (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/cbs-corporation/cbs/nys">CBS</a>), Time Warner, Inc. <p>News Corp. recently revealed its digital magazine "The Daily," specifically designed for Apple, Inc.'s (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>) iPad. Rather than being a modification of existing magazines or newspapers, this is a completely new product optimized for tablet viewing. The company had reportedly <a href="http://www.cleancutmedia.com/news/have-you-seen-the-daily-the-new-digital-magazine">invested about $30 million</a> to create the product.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/10/news-corp-launches-digital-magazine-stock-still-depends-on-ol/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>News Corp. Approximately <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/15/twitter-gets-a-step-closer-to-corporate-accounts/">70% of end-user interaction</a> with the microblogging service takes place away from <a href="http://www.twitter.com" target="_blank">Twitter.com</a>. As the company moves toward its <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/01/twitter-unveils-google-ad-model-despite-hype/">search-based ad model</a>, expected to be released later this quarter, website traffic is becoming increasingly important. Yet, it's this gap between use and on-site action that might protect the company going forward ... at least if <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Facebook/">Facebook</a> can be used as an indicator.<br />
<br />
With Facebook Connect, members of the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/socialnetworking/">social networking</a> site can interact with their profiles "remotely." If you want to share this blog post on Facebook, for example, you can do it without opening a new browser, plucking www.facebook.com on the keyboard and pasting the URL into the status field. This connection, even though it costs Facebook a pageview or two, reinforces the user's relationship with the site, increasing the likelihood that he or she will remain active overall. It also provides fodder for other members, fueling more clicks, comments and likes ... and ultimately cash in the Facebook till.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/08/off-platform-key-to-social-media-survival-and-success/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Off-Platform Key to Social Media Survival and Success</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/08/off-platform-key-to-social-media-survival-and-success/">Off-Platform Key to Social Media Survival and Success</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 10:30:00 EST. After <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/media/help-wanted-twitter-seeks-staff-who-can-shake-its-monetizer/19311133/" target="_blank">Twitter COO Dick Costolo explained that the company was going to unveil a "non-traditional" advertising model</a> and claimed that "people will love it," what we're seeing is a foray into decidedly charted territory.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100226/twitters-ad-plan-copy-google/" target="_blank">According to AllThingsD</a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Twitter/">Twitter</a>'s ad model will resemble the one that has been so successful for search and online ad giant Google (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas" target="_blank">GOOG</a>). Fifty-seven percent of respondents are drawn to local <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/newspaper/">newspaper</a> websites. But take this with a grain of salt: 54% chose online portals and 53% selected local <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/television/">television</a> websites. In terms of what consumers consider the most trusted local news source to be, newspapers have the lead, but the gap is narrowing. Now, only 33% choose the newspaper for this reason, with local television sites pulling in 32%.<br /> <br /> "While newspaper Web sites often face dozens of competitors touting their own local offerings in any given market, they have been able to thrive by leveraging trusted brands and strong local content to appeal to consumers and advertisers alike," <a target="_blank" href="http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1004070834">John Sturm, president and CEO of the NAA, said in a statement</a>.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/26/newspapers-claim-to-be-classified-leaders/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Newspapers Claim to be Classified Leaders</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/26/newspapers-claim-to-be-classified-leaders/">Newspapers Claim to be Classified Leaders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 26 Feb 2010 12:30:00 EST. <br />
Despite all the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/BlackFriday/">Black Friday</a> social media engagement this year, a substantial 75% of the top 100 online retailers don't have a formal presence on Facebook, <a target="_blank" href="http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&amp;art_aid=122085">according to a study by ForeSee Results</a>. Well, increasingly, <a target="_blank" href="http://digital.venturebeat.com/2010/02/03/is-facebook-becoming-a-portal/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=twitter-publisher-main&amp;utm_campaign=twitter">the answer is Facebook</a>. The social networking site, which boasts well over 350 million registered users, is now the fourth largest referral source of traffic to online news destinations. Almost a year ago, only 0.5% of traffic to news and media sites came from <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Facebook/">Facebook</a>. Today, that level is 3.5%, according to <a target="_blank" href="http://weblogs.hitwise.com/us-heather-hopkins/2010/02/facebook_largest_news_reader_1.html">data from Web analytics firm Experian Hitwise</a>.</p>
<p>Only Google (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>), Yahoo! (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/yahoo-inc/yhoo/nas">YHOO</a>) and MSN (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas">MSFT</a>) send more traffic to news sites. <a target="_blank" href="http://news.google.com">Google News</a>, a subset of the search engine giant, failed to keep pace with Facebook, despite the fact that it exists specifically to send Internet users to media outlets. Only 1.39% of referrals came from this source.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/facebook-grows-as-a-source-for-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Facebook Grows as a Source for News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/07/facebook-grows-as-a-source-for-news/">Facebook Grows as a Source for News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 07 Feb 2010 10:20:00 EST. That wonderful destination where I can re-acquaint myself with my favorite Justin-Timberlake-on-SNL moments, catch up on episodes of <em>Greek</em>, and search for those old <em>Silver Spoons </em>clips I remember so fondly. The two-year-old website is a joint venture between Walt Disney's (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>) ABC Network, General Electric's (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>) NBC Universal division, and News Corp.'s (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">NWS</a>) FOX Entertainment Group, and is partially funded by Providence Equity Partners.</p>
<p>But just as online news readers may <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/20/its-official-your-online-new-york-times-will-come-at-a-price/">soon be charged</a> to access <em>The New York Times </em>online, we may have to open our wallets for certain corners of the Hulu universe (they will likely still let me watch <em>Silver Spoons </em>for free).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/01/is-the-free-ride-over-at-hulu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is the Free Ride Over at Hulu?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/01/is-the-free-ride-over-at-hulu/">Is the Free Ride Over at Hulu?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 13:50:00 EST. It has tried to put content behind a pay wall before (and failed), as have other newspapers.</p>
<p>Almost universally, newspapers have struggled with online subscriptions, with the <em>Financial Times</em> and <em>Wall Street Journal</em>, a News Corp (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas" target="_blank">NWS</a>) property, the only two that have really delivered results better than awful. Whether the <em>New York Times</em> can operate at that level is in doubt, particularly given the stunning realization about Long Island daily newspaper <em>Newsday</em>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/27/newsday-shows-future-of-online-subscription-model/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Newsday Shows Future of Online Subscription Model</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/27/newsday-shows-future-of-online-subscription-model/">Newsday Shows Future of Online Subscription Model</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 11:20:00 EST. Though Zuckerberg cites Internet trends that indicate a reduced concern with privacy, the real reasons are more likely financial.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/11/facebook-wants-to-be-myspace/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Facebook Wants to Be MySpace</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/11/facebook-wants-to-be-myspace/">Facebook Wants to Be MySpace</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 10:40:00 EST. Rather than yield their content to alien formats, Time Inc. (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys" target="_blank">TWX</a>), News Corp. (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas" target="_blank">NWS</a>), Conde Nast, Hearst and Meredith Corp. <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34329485/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/" target="_blank">have announced plans to develop a digital content format of their own</a>. This new product would compete with the newly released Nook from Barnes &amp; Noble (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/barnes-and-noble-inc/bks/nys" target="_blank">BKS</a>), as well as one from Sony (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys" target="_blank">SNE</a>) and the industry-leading Kindle from Amazon (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/amazon-com-inc/amzn/nas" target="_blank">AMZN</a>). The new <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/ereader/">e-reader</a> content will come in color and in a format that would work across several devices.</p>
<p>The five media companies are equal partners in this joint venture, which will allow publishers to set their own prices for their content -- an obvious response to what they see as unfavorable revenue share deals offered by Amazon earlier this year. <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/RupertMurdoch/">Rupert Murdoch</a> has been particularly vocal on this issue, particularly about the fact that News Corp. only receives a little more than a third of the $14.99 a month it costs to subscribe to the <em><a href="http://www.wsj.com" target="_blank">Wall Street Journal</a></em> on a <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Kindle/">Kindle</a>. He says of the device that it's "a fantastic invention for reading books. It is not much of an experience for newspapers."<br /><br /><br /></p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/09/time-news-corp-hearst-and-others-to-compete-with-kindle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time, News Corp, Hearst, and others to compete with Kindle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/09/time-news-corp-hearst-and-others-to-compete-with-kindle/">Time, News Corp, Hearst, and others to compete with Kindle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 09 Dec 2009 09:30:00 EST. The search engine giant's CEO, Eric Schmidt, says that his company could actually help the newspaper industry survive the shift from print to digital ... a shift that's been more than a decade in the making, he was kind enough not to note.</p>
<p>According to Schmidt, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE5B23ED20091203" target="_blank">publishers need to dig into the online environment and find new ways to generate revenue</a>. Why would Facebook need Class A and Class B shares otherwise? Under the new structure, which is similar to Google's (<a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>), Mark Zuckerberg and other early entrants wouldn't have to worry about yielding the floor to outsiders <strike>when</strike> if the company goes public.</p>
<p>The stock structure was adopted to ensure that existing shareholders keep control on voting issues, according to Facebook statement. No details were given as to who the winners are in this arrangement, but a <em>Wall Street Journal</em> <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704779704574556053908778352.html?mod=WSJ_hps_LEFTWhatsNews">report</a> says that, according to its sources, all current shareholders would be converted to Class B shares, which carry 10 times the voting rights of Class A shares. <br /></p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/25/new-facebook-share-structure-hints-at-ipo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Facebook share structure hints at IPO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/25/new-facebook-share-structure-hints-at-ipo/">New Facebook share structure hints at IPO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 08:30:00 EST. Since April 1, 2009, <a target="_blank" href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34094479/ns/business-media_biz/">new rules for counting circulation have turned some newspapers from losing to gaining</a>, even in a market where the print community is getting thrashed. Instead of selling more copies every day, these publications are counting online visits, as long as they are from paying subscribers - for either protected portions of the website or digital replica editions.</p>
<p>The new auditing standards, which affect <em>USA Today</em>, a Gannet (<a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/gannett-inc-del/gci/nys">GCI</a>) property, and News Corp's (<a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">NWS</a>) <em>Wall Street Journal</em>, among others, often allow newspapers that bundle print and digital editions to count the subscriber twice. According to a report by the Associated Press, the new rule is preventing circulation from looking as bad as it really may be.</p>

This isn't always the case. There are plenty of ways to get ahead when you don't have the top product on the market. The smoke-filled backroom meetings may be a thing of the past, but the net effect lingers. This is exactly what went down, <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34099291/ns/business-us_business/" target="_blank">according to a Reuters report</a>, when Microsoft (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas" target="_blank">MSFT</a>) had a chat with News Corp (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas" target="_blank">NWS</a>).</p>
<p>Microsoft suggested a relationship with News Corp which would involve the latter's yanking its news sites from Google (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas" target="_blank">GOOG</a>) ... for a fee, of course. This would cost the search engine giant -- which is also a news aggregation giant -- access to some hefty publications, including the <a href="http://www.wsj.com" target="_blank"><em>Wall Street Journal</em></a>, the <em><a href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/" target="_blank">Sun</a></em> and the <em><a href="http://www.nypost.com" target="_blank">New York Post</a></em>.</p>

After all, in the days before Google (<a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>), when Microsoft (<a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/microsoft-corporation/msft/nas">MSFT</a>) was the only uber-player in town, Windows was the perpetual malware target. Phishers, however, aren't discriminating; they're just looking for an account to plunge. So, both Apple (<a target="_blank" href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>) and Microsoft users are threatened. Virus writers do tend to focus on the Windows operating system, which owns 90% of the OS market, <a target="_blank" href="http://blogs.usatoday.com/technologylive/2009/11/mac-phishing-attacks.html">but phishers are platform independent</a>.</p>
<p>Phishing involves attempts to get a user to reveal information about their accounts. Once the soon-to-be victim clicks that link or fills out a form, the "transaction" is complete -- no operating system interaction necessary. As a result, there really isn't any advantage to using a Mac over a PC.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/18/apples-macs-arent-safe-from-phishing-attacks/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple's Macs aren't safe from phishing attacks</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/18/apples-macs-arent-safe-from-phishing-attacks/">Apple's Macs aren't safe from phishing attacks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 10:20:00 EST. (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas" target="_blank">NWS</a>), <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/bf0e1bde-cca9-11de-8e30-00144feabdc0.html?nclick_check=1" target="_blank">MySpace is the mistake that keeps on costing</a>. It's bad enough that Murdoch's empire paid $500 million for the social networking platform shortly before <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Facebook/">Facebook</a> knocked it from the premier spot in the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/socialmedia/">social media</a> beauty pageant, but now we also know that News Corp. has committed $350 million to office space for MySpace that will never be used. </p>
<p>News Corp is shelling out more than $1 million a month for 420,000 square feet in Playa Vista, near Los Angeles International Airport. The deal was signed in August 2008 by Peter Levinsohn, former president of the Fox Interactive Media Unit. At the time, he issued a chest-puffing memo claiming it was "the single biggest real-estate transaction in Los Angeles in the last 25 years." Fortunately, he didn't mix the word "genius" in there at all.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/09/news-corps-myspace-mistakes-pile-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>News Corp's MySpace mistakes pile up</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/09/news-corps-myspace-mistakes-pile-up/">News Corp's MySpace mistakes pile up</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 10:30:00 EST.
