Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A): Reliable returns from a 'super major'

"One of the 'super five' integrated oil and gas companies, Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS.A) has a diversified portfolio of oil and gas assets around the globe," says international investing expert Nick Lanyi.

In High Yield International, he says, "As one of the more conservative plays on a falling dollar and a rebound in oil & gas prices, I am adding Royal Dutch Shell -- yielding of 5.8% -- to our 'Reliable Income' portfolio."

"The Amsterdam-based company's revenue is more gas-oriented than its other super-major peers; about 40% of production is natural gas.

"In addition, Shell is more focused on unconventional sources of oil and gas than most -- the company plans to derive more than 10% of its revenue from sources such as oil sands and liquefied natural gas by 2014. This coincides with Shell's long-standing reputation as an industry leader in technology and engineering.

Southern Peru (PCU): Two income experts build gains in copper

This post is part of a special report, A Dozen Ways to Play an Obama Building Boom.

Two advisors that specializes in income investing -- Mark Skousen and Nick Lanyi -- both turn to high-yielder, Southern Peru Copper (NYSE: PCU) as a contrarian play on building and infrastructure growth ahead.

Skousen, in his High Income Alert, he says, "Make no mistake, this is a contrarian play. But if you believe in buying straw hats in winter, PCU is an exceptional value at these levels."

"More than 2.9 billion pounds of copper are used in construction every year, primarily in plumbing and wiring, while electronic products use more than 1.9 billion pounds a year.

"Transportation equipment -- including cars, trains, planes and submarines -- uses more than 1 billion pounds a year.

"The manufacture of industrial equipment requires another 1 billion pounds annually. And consumer and general products, from cookware to church bells to pennies, require another 800 million pounds.

"Southern Peru operates the world's largest copper mine high in the Andes mountains, producing more than 800 million pounds of copper a year.

"Of course, the commodity bull market that was running at a full gallop in the first half of this year has stopped dead in its tracks. Copper prices are no exception. When building and manufacturing slow, so does the demand for the red metal.

Ring up gains in Eastern Europe with Deutsche Telekom (DT)

"The ongoing renaissance of Eastern Europe is generating tremendous economic activity, boosting profits for companies across the continent," says Nick Lanyi in High Yield International.

He explains, "As Europe's largest economy, Germany is well positioned to continue benefiting from this growth." And within Germany, his current top pick is Deutsche Telekom (NYSE: DT), which offers a dividend yield of 6.7%.

"German stocks are currently available at historically low valuations. The country's DAX Index is trading at only about 12 times 2008 earnings estimates, with an average dividend yield of 3.4%.

"One of the world's largest telecommunications companies, Deutsche Telekom is much more than the descendant of Germany's monopoly local phone utility. It generates more than half its revenue from outside Germany -- from diversified operations across Europe and in the U.S.

"Outside of Germany, DT garners more growth from its wireless operations in Eastern Europe, the U.K. and the U.S. Most of these operate under the well-known T-Mobile brand. Overall, worldwide wireless activities account for about 55% of the company's revenue.
