Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) competes with Intel (INTC) and Nvidia (NVDA) in the PC microprocessor and graphics businesses. Our price estimate for AMD stands at $9.30, which is roughly in line with market price. We estimate that although most of the company's value comes from microprocessor business, about 14% can be attributed to graphics.

One of the recent wins in this regard was Apple's (AAPL) plan to use AMD's graphics cards in its Macbook Pro notebooks. What does this tell us about AMD?

The shares of Nvidia (NVDA) have been tearing up the charts in 2011, thanks to a lucrative settlement with Intel (INTC) and a high-profile new partnership with ARM Holdings (ARMH). The month of January isn't quite half-over yet, but the stock is already sitting on a year-to-date gain of 51.6%.

Judging by at least one headline hitting the wires, the stock's rapid rise is making some analysts nervous. However, on Wednesday, one upbeat options trader placed a bet on additional upside from NVDA during the near term.

Rambus (RMBS - option chain) shares are rising today after the company announced it has signed a patent licensing agreement with NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA), under which RMBS grants NVDA a patent license for certain memory controllers at a 1% royalty rate for SDR memory controllers and a 2% royalty rate for other memory controllers. However, neither company has signed a release of liability or dismissed any litigation between them. RMBS had earlier charged that NVDA has infringed on some of its chip patents. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on RMBS.

NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA) slumped to a new 52-week nadir of $8.65 right out of the gate Thursday morning, thanks to a little help from analysts at BMO Capital Markets. The brokerage firm trimmed its price target on NVDA from $10 to $9 and lowered its opinion of the semiconductor sector to underperform from market perform, citing the industry's bloated inventories for the negative note.

So, to put it bluntly, the stock isn't faring so well ahead of its earnings report. NDVA is expected to unveil a second-quarter profit of about 11 cents per share, up from its year-ago earnings of 7 cents per share. The company has a remarkably solid history in the earnings spotlight, having exceeded analysts' consensus profit estimates in each of the past four quarters.
