OSIR logoLooking for stocks that should benefit now that Senator Obama is officially President-Elect Obama? Many investors believe that liberals negatively impact stock markets in general and that the only companies to benefit from a liberal adminstration are those that stand to get tax breaks or incentives.

Personally, I don't believe that the market is going to go to hell in a handbasket just because Obama is now officially 'the man.' We have had some real rough times already and there are quite a few bargain stocks out there. An Obama victory looked more and more certain in the weeks approaching Election Day. There should not be a big negative reaction, because the markets will have already priced in the high likelihood of an Obama win. That being said, there should still be certain industries and stocks that are boosted more than others.

My pick for a strong industry under President Obama is the biotechnology sector, specifically those companies that work with stem cells. While not a major issue through the election cycle, Obama has generally favored the removal of federal stem cell restrictions, including research on embryonic stem cells. A few years ago, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 was approved by both the House and Senate, but vetoed by President Bush. The House failed in its attempt to override the veto. Obama voted in favor of the measure in the Senate and it is not a stretch to think that in the next two years with a Democratically-controlled Congress that a similar measure would be brought up and passed without much opposition.

Osiris Therapeutics (NASDAQ: OSIR - option chain) is a leader in the stem cell industry, and currently uses cells harvested from adult bone marrow. OSIR has recently partnered with Genzyme (NASDAQ: GENZ- option chain) to sell two of its developing drugs internationally. OSIR retains the rights to these therapies in the US and in Canada. OSIR received $130M up front for these rights, but the agreement calls for more payments (up to $1.25B) depending on future sales.

Analyst upgrades:

  • Barclays upgraded the Integrated Oil sector to Positive from Neutral citing valuations. Note that Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM) was upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight based on valuation.
  • After Force Protection (NASDAQ: FRPT) reported that its 1H08 sales increased more than 200%, Stanford thinks that Force Protection could be poised for several new opportunities in 2009 and they believe the company's risk is already priced into the stock; the firm raised Force Protection to Hold from Sell.
  • Cowen expects eHealth (NASDAQ: EHTH) to benefit from the steady decline in employer-sponsored health insurance offered by small businesses and reduced regulatory risk, among other reasons. The firm upgraded shares to Outperform from Neutral.
  • Allied Capital (NYSE: ALD) was upgraded to Market Perform from Underperform at BMO Capital.
  • Caris upgraded Carmike Cinemas (NASDAQ: CKEC) to Above Average from Average.
  • International Flavors & Fragrances (NYSE: IFF) was upgraded to Neutral from Underweight at JP Morgan.

  • Jefferies upgraded shares of Omnicare (NYSE: OCR) to Buy from Hold and raised their target to $37 from $24.50 following the company's Q2 results to reflect improving earnings visibility.
  • Piper upgraded Motorola (NYSE: MOT) to Neutral from Sell following the company's Q2 results to reflect its continued execution in cost management. The firm raised its target to $9 from $7.
  • Capital One Southcoast upgraded Patterson-UTI Energy (NASDAQ: PTEN) to Add from Neutral based on additional new builds already under contract and rig reactivations. The firm raised its target to $36 from $32.
Analyst downgrades:
  • Citigroup downgraded shares of ImClone (NASDAQ: IMCL) to Hold from Buy despite thinking the initial offer from Bristol Myers (BMY) will be raised, as they do not advise chasing shares at current levels. The company's target was raised to $73 from $56.
  • First Mercury (NYSE: FMR) and Monster (NASDAQ: MNST) were downgraded at JP Morgan to Neutral from Overweight.
  • Jefferies lowered Osiris Therapeutics (NASDAQ: OSIR) to Underperform from Hold.
Analyst initiations:
  • Morgan Keegan initiated Cicso Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) with a Market Perform rating, citing the difficult macro environment; the firm believes 2H08 estimates will come down.
  • Banc of America reinstated coverage of MF Global (NYSE: MF) with a Buy rating and $8.36 target.
