Analyst upgrades, downgrades and initiations: AZN, HPQ, KO, MA, SCHW, USB ...

Analyst upgrades:

  • FBR Capital upgraded U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB) and New York Community Bancorp (NYSE: NYB) to Market Perform from Underperform to reflect a new valuation framework. The firm raised its target on U.S. Bancorp to $21 from $14 and on New York Community Bancorp to $10 from $9.
  • Stephens upgraded Insulet (NASDAQ: PODD) to Overweight from Equal Weight to reflect the company's top-line growth prospects and reasonable expectations. The firm raised its target on shares to $14 from $8.
  • Baird upgraded Athenahealth (NASDAQ: ATHN) to Outperform from Neutral and raised its target to $46 from $37 based on expectations for revenue and gross margin expansion, and relative valuation.
  • Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM) was upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Barclays.
  • Phillips-Van Heusen (NYSE: PVH) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at BofA/Merrill.
  • Reliant Energy (NYSE: RRI) was upgraded to Conviction Buy from Neutral at Goldman.

Analyst upgrades, downgrades and initiations: TASR, M, FDO, NVDA, DGX ...

Analyst upgrades:
  • Merriman upgraded Taser (NASDAQ: TASR) to Buy from Neutral as it believes current valuation levels do not reflect the company's market opportunities and that the law enforcement funding in President Obama's stimulus plan will boost sales in Q4 and FY10.
  • Goldman upgraded Macy's (NYSE: M) to Buy from Neutral and added shares to its Conviction Buy List based on reduced balance sheet concerns and improved risk/reward. The firm also raised their target to $8.25 from $8.
  • JP Morgan upgraded Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO) to Neutral from Underweight and raised its target to $29 from $19 following the better-than-expected Q2 report. The analyst continues to prefer Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR) and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT).
  • Goldman removed Universal Am (NYSE: UAM) from the Conviction Sell List.
  • McDermott (NYSE: MDR) was upgraded to Buy from Hold at Jefferies.
  • Canadian Natural (NYSE: CNQ) was upgraded to Sector Outperformer from Sector Performer at CIBC.

Analyst initiations: CPST, PODD, CMC and TDC

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Capstone Turbine, Insulet and Teradata were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Merriman believes Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST) is well-positioned for rapid growth as capacity constraints and dependence on subsidies drive the adoption of clean, dependable hydrocarbon-based technologies. Shares were assumed with a Buy rating.
  • JMP Securities initiated Insulet (NASDAQ: PODD) with an Outperform rating and $29 target and expects increased adoption of the company's OmniPod disposable, tubeless insulin pump.
  • Pacific Crest initiated Teradata (NYSE: TDC) with an Underperform rating. The firm is a seller of shares given the slowing economy and the company's exposure to larger IT deals.
OTHER INITIATIONS:

Analyst initiations: CYPB, BAC, PODD, TLEO and VOCS

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Cypress Bioscience, Banc of America, Insulet, Taleo and Vocus Inc were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Friedman Billings started shares of Cypress Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ: CYPB) with an Outperform rating and $22 target, and is positive on the company's lead product milnacipran, in Phase III studies for fibromyalgia. The firm expects a 1Q09 launch and believes the U.S. market could be as large as $7B.
  • Goldman resumed coverage of Bank of America Corporation (NYSE: BAC) with a Buy rating and $63 target as they believe the company has around $22.5B of unrealized gains in its strategic investment portfolio. Goldman also added BAC to their Americas Buy List.
  • Insulet Corporation (NASDAQ: PODD) was initiated at William Blair with an Outperform rating. The firm believes the unique features of the OmniPod will allow PODD to capture a meaningful portion of the 300,000 current insulin pumpers in the United States.
  • Soleil started shares of Taleo Corporation (NASDAQ: TLEO) with a Buy rating and $35 target and believes the company's recent growth pace can continue.
  • Shares of Vocus Inc (NASDAQ: VOCS) were also initiated at Soleil with a Buy rating and $39 target. The firm believes the company can gain share in the early stage market for public relations software given its on-demand model and low price entry point.
OTHER INITIATIONS:

Analyst initiations: ETN, EXPE, INTU, PCLN and SOHU

MOST NOTEWORTHY: The machinery industry, Sohu.com (SOHU), Intuit (INTU), Priceline.com (PCLN) and Expedia (EXPE) were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Pali initiated Sohu.com (NASDAQ: SOHU) with a Buy rating and $41 target and believes the Olympic Games represent the biggest growth catalyst for the company.
  • Jefferies started shares of Intuit (NASDAQ: INTU) with a Buy rating and $34 target, likes the momentum in TurboTax and QuickBooks and sees potential upside fo FY08 expectations.
  • Banc of America initiated Priceline.com (NASDAQ: PCLN) with a Buy rating and $96 target and is positive on the company's European positioning given expectations for top line growth and margin expansion. The firm also started shares of Expedia (NASDAQ: EXPE) with a Buy rating and $35 target, positive on the company's strong management, solid competitive positioning and improving fundamentals.

OTHER INITIATIONS:
  • Omega Financial (NASDAQ: OMEF) was initiated at Keefe Bruyette with a Market Perform rating and $25 target.
  • Merrill Lynch initiated shares of Insulet (NASDAQ: PODD) with a Buy rating.
