  • Allegheny (NYSE: AYE) was initiated with a buy at Citigroup as attractive at current levels. Target is $33.
  • PPL Corp. (NYSE: PPL) was initiated with a buy at Citigroup. Citi believes PPL's earnings power from the Pennsylvania regulated utility market is being underappreciated. Target is $35.
  • FirstEnergy (NYSE: FE) was initiated with a Buy at Citigroup who believes the company's current valuation doesn't reflect its transition to full market-based rates in 2011. Target is $56.
  • Waste Management (NYSE: WM) coverage resumed with a Neutral at Goldman.
  • Exxon (NYSE: XOM) initiated with a Buy at Soleil. Target is $90.

Analyst upgrades, downgrades and initiations: ADM, ANN, GENZ, ICE, MON, RIMM ...

Analyst upgrades:

  • Keefe Bruyette upgraded Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE) to Market Perform from Underperform following the company's in-line quarter and extended buyback. The firm raised its target price on shares to $103 from $98.
  • Merriman upgraded Cree (NASDAQ: CREE) to Buy from Neutral after transitioning coverage of the stock as it believes HB-LED chips are gaining momentum and that the company can top its recently raised guidance.
  • Deutsche Bank upgraded Glatfelter (NYSE: GLT) to Buy from Hold following the company's Q2 results due to falling net debt levels and valuation. The firm raised its target on shares to $14 from $8.
  • Corporate Executive Board (NASDAQ: EXBD) was upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at Baird.
  • Cognizant (NASDAQ: CTSH) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Goldman.
  • Unit Corp. (NYSE: UNT) was upgraded to Buy from Sell at Jesup & Lamont.

PPL Corp. is a mix of safety and growth

Readers of this space know that one of the preferred sectors is the electric power generation sector.

And it's preferred for a reason that may not be obvious to all. Electricity via wind, solar, and nuclear generation is likely to play a large role in energy as climate change reduction, then elimination, becomes a societal goal. Electricity also remains a potential propulsion source for cars, particularly once oil resumes its inevitable climb. And with the above in mind, electric power generator PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL) is worth a review.

Analyst initiations 5-24-07: BKC, NGAS, NWACQ and OSIP

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Burger King Holdings, Inc (BKC), Supertel Hospitality Inc (SPPR), OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc (OSIP), Brown-Forman Corp (BF.B) and NGAS Resources, Inc (NGAS) were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • CIBC considers shares of Burger King Holdings (NYSE: BKC) to still be attractive and has above-consensus estimates, starting shares with an Sector Outperformer rating. The firm believes increased operating hours and breakfast value meals will drive results, while cost savings should help margins.
  • JMP Securities believes there is plenty of room for growth at Supertel Hospitality (NASDAQ: SPPR) via acquisitions, leading to strong FFO upside, initiating shares with an Outperform rating and $8 target.
  • ThinkEquity sees additional upside for Tarceva and started OSI Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: OSIP) with a Buy rating and $50 target.
  • AG Edwards believes Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF.B) is well-positioned to benefit from new trends in spirits and wine, starting shares with a Buy rating and $74 target.
  • RBC Capital is positive on NGAS Resources' (NASDAQ: NGAS) growth potential and high quality assets, starting shares with an Outperform rating and $11 target...

  • Friedman, Billings, Ramsey upgraded shares of Chico's FAS Inc (NYSE: CHS) to Market Perform from Underperform and raised their target to $25 from $17 on valuation.
  • Matrix USA upgraded Live Nation (NYSE: LYV) to Hold from Sell on valuation.
  • Sanders Morris upgraded Clear Channel Communications (NYSE: CCU) to Hold from Sell, as the firm believes the disapproval by holders to sell the company will result in shares trading in the $34-$37 range.
OTHER UPGRADES:
  • Lehman upgraded PPL Corp (NYSE: PPL) to Overweight from Equal-Weight.
