MasterCard (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/mastercard-incorporated/ma/nys" class="inlinked">MA</a>) is also planning to launch its own offering for personal payments.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">We estimate that American Express derives 73% of our <a href="https://www.trefis.com/company?hm=AXP.trefis">$49.61 price estimate</a> from card transaction and execution fees while Visa derives almost 29% of its <a href="https://www.trefis.com/company?hm=V.trefis">$85.03 Trefis price estimate</a> from transaction fees.</p>

Then again, the reason was usually that the transaction had only a tangential strategic connection (like Skype). But, when there were clear synergies, the results have been particularly strong. Just look at PayPal.<br />
<br />
Well, it looks like eBay has learned this lesson. That is, the company's latest big deal is the <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110328006021/en/eBay-Acquire-GSI-Commerce">$2.4 billion acquisition</a> of GSI Commerce (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gsi-commerce-inc/gsic/nas">GSIC</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/ebay-strikes-a-2-4-billion-deal-for-gsi-commerce/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>eBay Strikes a $2.4 Billion Deal for GSI Commerce</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/ebay-strikes-a-2-4-billion-deal-for-gsi-commerce/">eBay Strikes a $2.4 Billion Deal for GSI Commerce</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 14:30:00 EST. After all, they have become a key part of our lives. And smartphones have the power to carry out secure and sophisticated transactions.</p>
<p>As is no surprise, many companies are scrambling to be winners in the e-wallet space. Take American Express (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/american-express-company/axp/nys">AXP</a>). The company has <a href="http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/story/american-express-launches-serve-digital-commerce-platform/2011-03-28">launched a new e-wallet</a> called Serve.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/american-express-e-wallet-serve/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>American Express Revs Up Its E-wallet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/american-express-e-wallet-serve/">American Express Revs Up Its E-wallet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 11:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas">EBAY</a>), first discussed here on on May 14, 2009 at a price of $16.84, have pushed through psychological resistance at $30, and now may be a good time to consider taking some profits off the table with EBAY, if you're in at/near $17. <br />
<br />
However, those investors who can tolerate the risk can maintain their full position, and go for an even larger gain, as EBAY is likely to continue to head north. <br />
<br />
eBay's marketplace unit, displaying more than 140 million listings per day, should post a revenue rise of 6-8% in 2011. Meanwhile, PayPal, now in 190 markets, should register 20% revenue growth in both 2011 and 2012.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/ebay-is-in-an-uptrend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>eBay Is in an Uptrend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/ebay-is-in-an-uptrend/">eBay Is in an Uptrend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. This is the new mantra at eBay. According to chief executive John Donahoe: "Clearly, I hope you see that we are starting to play offense."</p>
<p>EBay (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas" class="inlinked">EBAY</a>) has long been a dominant player in the e-commerce industry. <a href="http://pages.cs.brandeis.edu/%7Emagnus/ief248a/eBay/history.html">Started in 1995</a>, it has brought together buyers and sellers in an auction format. Now, 16 years later and highly successful, the company finds a new competitor in Amazon.com (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/amazon-com-inc/amzn/nas">AMZN</a>), which is grabbing market share. In the meantime, eBay has acquired Paypal, as a wholly owned subsidiary. Paypal, an online payment service, helped to propel eBay's business transactions.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/11/a-makeover-for-ebay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Makeover for eBay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/11/a-makeover-for-ebay/">A Makeover for eBay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 11 Feb 2011 12:15:00 EST. Although, it looks like the standout is Apple (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>). As a sign of it prowess, the company has a market value over $300 billion.<br />
<br />
But the competitive environment is intensifying. Just look at Google (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>). Not long ago, its Android mobile operating system was considered an interesting side project. Now, it has become a juggernaut.<br />
<br />
Yet the problem is that it has proven to be difficult to monetize. But Google is not giving up. In fact, it looks like the company is building a mobile payments platform - which may hit the market this year. This is according to a recent <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/dec2010/tc20101231_087039.htm">piece</a> in BusinessWeek.com.<br />

Yet, <a href="http://www.insidefacebook.com/2010/03/22/zynga-paypal%e2%80%99s-second-largest-merchant-in-2009/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+InsideFacebook+%28Inside+Facebook%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher" target="_blank">the word out of the 2010 Media Summit in New York last week</a> is that Zynga, the social media games company, is the second largest merchant for the payment environment. Social games are growing rapidly, bolstered in large part by the rise of <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Facebook/">Facebook</a>, which now boasts around 400 million users.<br />
<br />
As <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/socialmedia/">social media</a> companies realize they need to move to the next level -- from adoption to revenue -- the virtual goods market has emerged as a substantial revenue stream, and Zynga's environment appears to have been designed to capitalize on it. According to an estimate by Citigroup (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys" target="_blank">C</a>) analyst Mark Mahaney, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/PayPal/">PayPal</a> took care o$500 million in virtual goods payments last year.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/23/social-games-player-zynga-is-2-on-paypal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Social Games Player Zynga Is #2 on PayPal</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/23/social-games-player-zynga-is-2-on-paypal/">Social Games Player Zynga Is #2 on PayPal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 23 Mar 2010 14:40:00 EST. But in light of its huge population and fast-growing economy, the potential is enormous.</p>
<p>So, eBay's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas">EBAY</a>) PayPal is getting aggressive in the country. For example, the company has struck a <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSLDE62G1QL20100317?type=marketsNews">partnership deal</a> with China UnionPay, which is the biggest electronic payments provider in China.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/17/paypal-makes-a-move-on-china/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PayPal Makes a Move on China</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/17/paypal-makes-a-move-on-china/">PayPal Makes a Move on China</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 13:40:00 EST. In fact, it is now grown into a global platform, which can transact in 24 currencies across 190 markets across the world.</p>
<p>But the payments market is undergoing another trend; that is, becoming an integral part of social networks. So this week, PayPal <a href="https://www.thepaypalblog.com/2010/02/paypal-is-now-a-way-to-pay-for-facebook-ads-and-facebook-credits/">announced</a> a deal to provide payment services to Facebook's massive user base, which now stands at 400 million.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/19/facebook-links-with-paypal-for-virtual-goods-boom/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Facebook Links with PayPal for Virtual Goods Boom</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/19/facebook-links-with-paypal-for-virtual-goods-boom/">Facebook Links with PayPal for Virtual Goods Boom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 12:30:00 EST. Basically, these are nothing more than digital footprints, such as cool graphics used as gifts on a social network or even weapons in online games. <br />
<br />
So how big is this market? According to Atul Bagga, an analyst at ThinkEquity, the <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&amp;sid=aUJPJRYwSerE&amp;pos=13">market</a> is expected to double this year to $1.6 billion. And by 2012, the market may reach $3.6 billion.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/04/facebook-sparks-the-3-6-billion-virtual-goods-space/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Facebook Sparks the $3.6 Billion Virtual Goods Space</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/04/facebook-sparks-the-3-6-billion-virtual-goods-space/">Facebook Sparks the $3.6 Billion Virtual Goods Space</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 04 Feb 2010 15:00:00 EST. Based in Silicon Valley, the company designs and manufactures high-performance, fully electric cars. The investors include the co-founders of Google (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>), Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and the founder is Elon Musk, who helped create PayPal.</p>
<p>The company's first car, which came on the market in 2008, is the Tesla Roadster. It can go from zero to 60 MHP in 3.9 seconds -- without any tailpipe emissions. On a single charge, the car can also go 236 miles. However, the price tag comes to a hefty $109,000.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/31/tesla-revs-up-for-an-ipo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tesla Revs Up for an IPO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/31/tesla-revs-up-for-an-ipo/">Tesla Revs Up for an IPO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 31 Jan 2010 10:10:00 EST. Just how good? In eBay's latest <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN2015228520100121?type=marketsNews">quarterly report</a> released Wednesday after the bell, PayPal was the growth driver as the company reported a 16% jump in revenues to $2.4 billion. Net income came to $1.4 billion, which was a nice increase from the $367 million in the same period a year ago. Taking out one-time items, the earnings were 44 cents per share. The <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aaG.YeJ_tvcU&amp;pos=6">consensus</a> was 40 cents per share.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/21/ebay-gets-a-big-payoff-from-paypal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>eBay Gets Big Payoff from PayPal</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/21/ebay-gets-a-big-payoff-from-paypal/">eBay Gets Big Payoff from PayPal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 09:00:00 EST. In 2006, he co-founded social media sensation <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/Twitter/">Twitter</a>, which traffics in content bites that are no more than 140 characters in length. He left his position as CEO a year ago (and remains chairman) and is now focusing on his newest endeavor: mobile payments. <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2009-12-29-mobile-payments_N.htm" target="_blank">He came up with the idea for his new company, Square, a year ago</a> and hopes it will revolutionize how money is exchanged. <br />
<br />
The first product that Square is bringing to market lives up to its name: it's a small cube-shaped credit card terminal that can plug into an iPhone's headset jack. The problem that the device is intended to solve is the swift and easy transaction of credit card payments for anyone. It was inspired by the plight of Dorsey's friend, Jim McKelvey, a glass artist who lost a $2,000 sale because he couldn't accept credit card payments.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/30/could-mobile-payment-become-a-common-easy-reality/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Could Mobile Payment Become a Common, Easy Reality?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/30/could-mobile-payment-become-a-common-easy-reality/">Could Mobile Payment Become a Common, Easy Reality?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 30 Dec 2009 10:40:00 EST. For example, I recently paid a contractor in India using the service. It was extremely easy.<br /><br />Well, I had a chance to talk to the Small Biz folks at PayPal and found out that there is much more to the service. In fact, PayPal can be a great way to boost your business.<br /><br />Of course, PayPal makes it easy to leverage ecommerce. And the costs are competitive, with transaction fees ranging from 1.9 percent to 2.9 percent, plus a 30 cent fee. What's more, there is no need to get a merchant account (which can be a painful and expensive process).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/04/19/entrepreneurs-journal-how-using-paypal-can-boost-revenues/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Entrepreneur's Journal: How using PayPal can boost revenues</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/04/19/entrepreneurs-journal-how-using-paypal-can-boost-revenues/">Entrepreneur's Journal: How using PayPal can boost revenues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 19 Apr 2009 19:00:00 EST. To make matters worse, some of these offerings will probably never bring in a dime and that is a big drag on Google's margins.</p>
<p>The days of Google supporting odd projects that have no financial future may be over. Perhaps the recession has brought those times to an end, or it may be that the ability to keep track of dozens of unrelated engineering projects has become a burden to the firm's management. How many of these programs Google cuts will be a sign of how serious the company is about keeping its profits as high as possible.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/15/google-finally-gets-aggressive-in-closing-loser-products/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Google finally gets aggressive in closing loser products</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/15/google-finally-gets-aggressive-in-closing-loser-products/">Google finally gets aggressive in closing loser products</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 15 Feb 2009 11:40:00 EST.
