Taking a closer look at some of the major block trades on this regional banking issue, it appears that a single spread strategist is responsible for a healthy portion of this option volume.</p>
<p>Specifically, the trader purchased a block of 10,000 June 10 calls for $0.50 each, and simultaneously sold 10,000 June 8 puts for $0.25 each. The result was a net debit of $0.25 per pair of contracts -- which means the speculator can begin collecting profits on those purchased calls if <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/keycorp-new/key/nys" class="inlinked">KEY</a> rallies beyond $10.25 by June expiration.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/03/buyout-buzz-inspires-bullish-keycorp-spread/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Buyout Buzz Inspires Bullish KeyCorp Spread</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/03/buyout-buzz-inspires-bullish-keycorp-spread/">Buyout Buzz Inspires Bullish KeyCorp Spread</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 17:00:00 EST. Plus, just Friday morning, CHK scored an <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;source=news&amp;cd=2&amp;ved=0CDsQqQIwAQ&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.americanbankingnews.com%2F2011%2F02%2F25%2Fchesapeake-energy-chk-upgraded-by-canaccord-genuity-to-buy%2F&amp;ei=xs1nTZytG4H68Aa5nf3DCw&amp;usg=AFQjCNGHPknuheLLRJicnb7hXVLEMUKHDQ">upgrade to buy</a> at Canaccord Genuity. The shares have gained ground as a result, with the equity up more than 13% from last Friday's close. However, bearish bets were the options of choice on CHK this morning.<br />
<br />
Within the first hour of Friday's session, more than 5,000 puts were exchanged on CHK's January 2012 35-strike put. The majority of these puts traded near the ask price, indicating they were most likely purchased. With CHK hovering just shy of $35 at last look, these long-term options are right at the money.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/25/long-term-puts-are-popular-on-chesapeake-energy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Long-Term Puts are Popular on Chesapeake Energy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/25/long-term-puts-are-popular-on-chesapeake-energy/">Long-Term Puts are Popular on Chesapeake Energy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 13:40:00 EST. Ahead of the announcement, analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are anticipating a profit of 23 cents per share, on average, which would represent an improvement over ValueClick's year-ago earnings of 18 cents per share.</p>
<p>ValueClick has a strong history in the earnings spotlight, having surpassed analysts' bottom-line expectations in each of the past four quarters. However, a quick scan of the stock's sentiment backdrop reveals a nearly palpable pessimism among both traders and analysts.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/15/valueclick-earnings-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ValueClick Earnings Preview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/15/valueclick-earnings-preview/">ValueClick Earnings Preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 12:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/retailers-post-a-generally-robust-january-2011-02-03">aggregate 4.2% rise</a> in monthly sales easily surpassed analysts' expectations, leading to a solidly bullish session for the SPDR S&amp;P Retail (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/spdr-series-trust/xrt/nys">XRT</a>) exchange-traded fund (ETF).<br />
<br />
However, not everyone was won over by January's stronger-than-forecast sales data. Around midday on Thursday, one skeptical options trader initiated a long put spread on the XRT, in an attempt to capitalize on expected weakness in the retail-based fund.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/03/betting-against-retail-with-an-xrt-put-spread/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Betting Against Retail with an XRT Put Spread</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/03/betting-against-retail-with-an-xrt-put-spread/">Betting Against Retail with an XRT Put Spread</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. Bright and early Monday, a spread speculator constructed a long straddle on the PowerShares QQQ Trust (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/powershares-exchange-traded-fund-trust-powershares-qqq-trust-series-1/qqqq/nas" class="inlinked">QQQQ</a>), with the trader hoping to capitalize on a substantial price swing over the next several weeks.</p>
<p>Specifically, the trader purchased a block of 1,205 February 56 calls, and simultaneously bought a matching block of 1,205 February 56 puts. QQQQ was hovering right at $55.69 at the time of these transactions, placing both strikes very near the money.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/31/straddle-player-bets-on-big-volatility-for-powershares-qqq-trust/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Straddle Player Bets on Big Volatility for PowerShares QQQ Trust</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/31/straddle-player-bets-on-big-volatility-for-powershares-qqq-trust/">Straddle Player Bets on Big Volatility for PowerShares QQQ Trust</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 10:30:00 EST. Next week, we'll hear the latest <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/">earnings</a> results from the likes of Citigroup (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>), Goldman Sachs (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>), and Wells Fargo (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">WFC</a>), just to name a few. </p>
<p>Of course, the biggest bank in the nation -- Bank of America (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>) -- also has a quarterly report on deck. Bright and early Friday morning, KBH announced <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110107-707013.html">quarterly net income of $17.4 million</a>, or 23 cents per share, on revenue of $451 million. Adjusted housing gross margins improved to 19.7% from 19%.</p>
<p>This marks KBH's first quarterly profit, without the aid of tax gains, in almost four years. Analysts were anticipating KBH to swallow a deficit of 17 cents per share on revenue of $441.3 million, so these results definitely qualify as a positive surprise.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/07/kb-home-q4-earnings-report/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>KB Home Rallies After Solid Q4 Report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/07/kb-home-q4-earnings-report/">KB Home Rallies After Solid Q4 Report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. Bright and early Tuesday morning, the exchange operator was singled out for a bearishly biased options strategy.</p>
<p>Shortly after the opening bell, a block of 1,950 March 24 puts traded near the ask price at $1.20, indicating they were most likely purchased. At the same time, a block of 3,900 March 21 puts changed hands near the bid price at $0.30, suggesting they were probably sold. Volume is easily outstripping open interest at both strikes, so it's safe to assume that we're seeing the initiation of a new spread position.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/04/a-ratio-put-spread-on-nasdaq-omx-group/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dissecting a Ratio Put Spread on Nasdaq OMX Group</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/04/a-ratio-put-spread-on-nasdaq-omx-group/">Dissecting a Ratio Put Spread on Nasdaq OMX Group</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 12:30:00 EST. Taking a closer look at the major block trades, it looks as though one speculator is anticipating a major price swing from GPS during the next year.</p>
<p>Specifically, the trader opened a long strangle on GPS by purchasing 2,619 January 2012 20-strike calls, and simultaneously buying 2,619 January 2012 17.50 puts. This two-legged option strategy allows the trader to benefit from a drastic move in the underlying equity, regardless of whether the shares move higher or lower.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/28/the-gap-singled-out-for-a-long-term-strangle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Gap Singled Out for a Long-Term Strangle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/28/the-gap-singled-out-for-a-long-term-strangle/">The Gap Singled Out for a Long-Term Strangle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 28 Dec 2010 12:30:00 EST. (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/garmin-ltd/grmn/nas">GRMN</a>) said it <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSSGE6BM09820101223">lost a patent dispute</a> with Japanese firm Pioneer Corp. Traders appear to be responding to new comments from Jim Cramer, after the host of CNBC's <em>Mad Money </em><a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/40752228">offered an upbeat opinion</a> on the stock Monday.</p>
<p>Specifically, Cramer is enthusiastic about Netflix's push into streaming content, and he has high expectations for future subscriber growth. The analyst also argued that the stock's valuation is actually quite reasonable, when measured against the company's long-term growth rate. For traders looking to take part in continued gains by NFLX, Cramer suggested in-the-money call options.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/21/netflix-rises-on-cramer-recommendation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Netflix Gains Ground on Cramer Recommendation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/21/netflix-rises-on-cramer-recommendation/">Netflix Gains Ground on Cramer Recommendation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 13:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/lennar-corporation/len/nys" class="inlinked">LEN</a>) just can't seem to win much respect on Wall Street. <p>Wall Street seems less than impressed by this technical outperformance, though. As points of concern, Alpert points to dropping prices and rising inventories in the wind-turbine industry.</p>
<p>AMSC tumbled to a loss of more than 6% Monday morning, deepening its year-to-date decline of 18%. The stock has suffered four consecutive Friday closes beneath its 10-week moving average, and AMSC is now trading below its 20-week moving average, as well. As of today, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1828949320101118">options are now available</a> to trade on the bailed-out automaker, and speculators are already rushing to place their bets on GM.<br />

The firm has been on a hot streak with its quarterly reports, having exceeded analysts' consensus earnings expectations in each of the last three reporting periods.<br />

However, the equity's technical performance isn't quite so impressive. The shares took a dive earlier this month after TiVo's patent dispute with EchoStar (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/echostar-corporation/sats/nas" class="inlinked">SATS</a>) and Dish Network (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dish-network-corporation/dish/nas" class="inlinked">DISH</a>) <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-11-09/tivo-accuses-dish-of-manipulating-legal-system.html">took an ugly turn</a> in the courtroom, and the stock has yet to recover.<br />

In a research note this morning, JPMorgan cited alternative energy issue First Solar (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/first-solar-inc/fslr/nas">FSLR</a>) as one equity that could be damaged by the GOP's Congressional gains.<br />
<br />
"Most of the downside is accounted for by the possibility of fiscally conservative measures, such as budget cuts and the reduction/elimination of certain subsidies," wrote JPMorgan in <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/jpmorgan-cites-stocks-possibly-hurt-by-election-2010-11-03">a note to clients</a>. <br />

Tuesday night, CENX confessed to a quarterly loss of $16.8 million, or 18 cents per share, down substantially from its year-ago profit of $40.1 million, or 45 cents per share. Sales for the quarter climbed to $279.2 million, but CENX's bottom line was dented by a $12.2 million mark-to-market loss on forward contracts.</p>
<p>The aluminum issue managed to exceed analysts' consensus revenue forecast of $269.5 million, but the quarterly loss fell well short of Wall Street's prediction for a net profit of 8 cents per share.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/27/century-aluminum-lower-after-q3-report/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Century Aluminum Gaps Lower After Q3 Report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/27/century-aluminum-lower-after-q3-report/">Century Aluminum Gaps Lower After Q3 Report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 11:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/intel-corporation/intc/nas" class="inlinked">INTC</a>), according to Doris Frankel of Reuters. The brokerage firm suggests the bearish options trade for shareholders who are looking to hedge their bets on INTC, due to concerns about contracting gross margins.</p>
<p>Specifically, with INTC trading just shy of $20, JPMorgan recommends buying the January 2011 19-strike put and selling the January 16 put. Currently, the January 19 put is asked at $0.63, while the January 16 put is bid at $0.13. At these prices, the long put spread could be initiated for a net debit of $0.50 per pair of contracts.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/26/should-you-play-an-intel-put-spread/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Should You Play an Intel Put Spread?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/26/should-you-play-an-intel-put-spread/">Should You Play an Intel Put Spread?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 26 Oct 2010 14:00:00 EST.
