But analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters have high hopes for results from fertilizer and animal feed maker Mosaic (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-mosaic-company/mos/nys">MOS</a>), apparel maker Phillips Van Heusen (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/phillips-van-heusen-corporation/pvh/nys">PVH</a>) and discount retailer Family Dollar (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/family-dollar-stores-inc/fdo/nys">FDO</a>). So here's a look at what they anticipate from these three companies.</p>
<p><strong>Mosaic</strong></p>
<p>During its fiscal second quarter, Cargill agreed to distribute <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/mosaic-and-cargill-agree-to-split-off-and-orderly-distribution-of-cargill-stake-in-mosaic/rfid405938161/?channel=pf">its stake in Mosaic</a>, and Mosaic also said it would <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/mosaic-to-redeem-455-million-2014-senior-notes/rfid394641356/?channel=pf">redeem senior notes</a>. Analysts anticipate that the Minnesota-based potash producer will report per-share earnings of $1.07, a jump of 53.3% from the same quarter of last year. Mosaic also is expected to post revenue of $2.4 billion for the three months that ended in February. That's a 35.9% rise from a year earlier.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/27/week-in-preview-mosaic-family-dollar-earnings-and-march-unempl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Mosaic, Family Dollar Earnings and March Unemployment Rate</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/27/week-in-preview-mosaic-family-dollar-earnings-and-march-unempl/">Week in Preview: Mosaic, Family Dollar Earnings and March Unemployment Rate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 27 Mar 2011 12:30:00 EST. But it turns out the highest end retailers have been doing just fine lately. Companies such as Tiffany (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/tiffany-and-company/tif/nys" class="inlinked">TIF</a>), Coach (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/coach-inc/coh/nys" class="inlinked">COH</a>) and Polo Ralph Lauren (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/polo-ralph-lauren-corporation/rl/nys" class="inlinked">RL</a>) have actually been beating the broader market for some time. <br />
<br />
Shares in all three of these consumer discretionary companies have gained about 70% since the recession ended in June 2009. Over the same period, the S&amp;P 500 ($<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sandp-500-index-rth/%24inx/cmi" class="inlinked">INX</a>) is up 20%.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/29/face-off-on-stocks-tiffany-coach-and-polo-ralph-lauren/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Face-Off on Stocks: Tiffany, Coach and Polo Ralph Lauren</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/29/face-off-on-stocks-tiffany-coach-and-polo-ralph-lauren/">Face-Off on Stocks: Tiffany, Coach and Polo Ralph Lauren</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 15:00:00 EST. On an adjusted basis, the apparel maker behind the Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands made 72 cents per share. <a href="http://www.theflyonthewall.com/permalinks/entry.php/PVHid1294513/PVH-PhillipsVan-Heusen-reports-Q-EPS-c-vs-consensus-of-c">TheFly</a> says that this number totally obliterated the analyst call, as the expected figure was 54 cents per share.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/08/phillips-van-heusen-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Phillips-Van Heusen Earnings Beat Wall Street in Q2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/08/phillips-van-heusen-earnings/">Phillips-Van Heusen Earnings Beat Wall Street in Q2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 08 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/polo-ralph-lauren-corporation/rl/nys">RL</a>) is trading higher this afternoon on its fiscal fourth-quarter data. It's not shooting up like a rocket, but on a day when the markets are having a tough time seeing a bid, I'll take it. <br />
<br />
At the time of this writing, shares of the company were up by $1.68, or nearly 2%, to $87.46. That's cool, but the volume is even better; it's multiple times the norm. There's conviction behind this move, huh? Question is, do you want to piggyback along for the ride?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/19/polo-ralph-lauren-up-on-q4-numbers-should-you-buy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Polo Ralph Lauren Up on Q4 Numbers: Should You Buy?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/19/polo-ralph-lauren-up-on-q4-numbers-should-you-buy/">Polo Ralph Lauren Up on Q4 Numbers: Should You Buy?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 19 May 2010 17:20:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/phillips-van-heusen-corporation/pvh/nys">PVH</a>) issued <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/phillips-van-heusen-corporation-reports-2009-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-results/rfid311585161/?channel=pf">Q4 numbers</a> Monday after the bell. The apparel maker, which recently purchased the Tommy Hilfiger brand, doubled its adjusted income to 61 cents per share. That was two pennies <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=pvh">ahead of estimates</a>. The top line increased 9%, also on an adjusted basis.</p>
<p>When you compare the fourth quarter's growth rates to the performance of the full fiscal year, you'll see a clear advantage to the former. This is hopefully indicative of a bright future course.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/23/phillips-van-heusen-increases-adjusted-profit-in-q4/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Phillips-Van Heusen Tops Estimates, the Future Looks Bright</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/23/phillips-van-heusen-increases-adjusted-profit-in-q4/">Phillips-Van Heusen Tops Estimates, the Future Looks Bright</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 23 Mar 2010 08:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/best-buy-incorporated/bby/nys">BBY</a>), ConAgra Foods Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/conagra-foods-inc/cag/nys">CAG</a>), Oracle Corp. (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/walgreen-co/wag/nys">WAG</a>), all of which are expected to post earnings and revenue growth, according to analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. Below is a closer look at a few other companies reporting this week for which expectations are high.</p>
<p>In the three months that ended in January, <strong>Williams-Sonoma</strong> (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/williams-sonoma-inc/wsm/nys">WSM</a>) saw <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/williams-sonoma-inc-announces-a-7-4percent-increase-in-2009-holiday-revenues-and-raises-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-year-2009-revenues-and-eps-guidance/rfid289140017/?channel=pf">strong holiday sales</a>, declared <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/williams-sonoma-inc-declares-quarterly-cash-dividend/rfid282680231/?channel=pf">a quarterly dividend</a>, and announced the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/williams-sonoma-inc-announces-that-howard-lester-chairman-and-ceo-will-retire-in-may-2010-after-leading-the-company-for-31-years/rfid293171155/?channel=pf">retirement of its CEO</a>. Analysts expect the San Francisco-based home products retailer to report that fiscal fourth-quarter earnings more than doubled from the same period of last year to $0.74 per share. Revenue for the period is expected to be 6.2% higher to $1.1 billion. For the full year, the forecast calls for earnings of $0.81 per share (+56.8%) on $3.1 billion in revenue (-8.3%). Williams-Sonoma earnings results have been better than expected in recent quarters -- beating consensus estimates by more than 200% in the third quarter.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/21/the-week-in-preview-eye-on-general-mills-tiffany-williams-son/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: Eye on General Mills, Tiffany, Williams-Sonoma and more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/21/the-week-in-preview-eye-on-general-mills-tiffany-williams-son/">The Week in Preview: Eye on General Mills, Tiffany, Williams-Sonoma and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 21 Mar 2010 12:00:00 EST. The stock was off by 9%, on strong volume. The market just wasn't buying the earnings news.</p>
<p>What happened? According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE62I2RP20100319?type=globalMarketsNews">Reuters</a>, the situation didn't seem so bad. The company made 64 cents per share in the fourth quarter. That was a lot better than the $1.58 per-share loss observed in the comparable period twelve months ago. Furthermore, estimates were set at 59 cents per share. Come on, what gives? Plus, if you look at the actual <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/perry-ellis-international-announces-strong-results-for-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-year-2010/rfid310621353/?channel=pf">press release</a>, you'll find some encouraging commentary from management. The worst of the economic problems is hopefully behind the business; in addition, cash flow appears to be decent.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/20/perry-ellis-sold-off-on-q4-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Perry Ellis Sold Off on Q4 Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/20/perry-ellis-sold-off-on-q4-earnings/">Perry Ellis Sold Off on Q4 Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 20 Mar 2010 11:20:00 EST. Consumers are more pessimistic this month than last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average loses 100 points on the news. Unemployment is better in one month, worse in another. The DJIA goes up on the good news, down on the bad. Home Depot has a good quarter, raises its dividend, and forecasts a better year for 2010. The stock goes up 50 cents on a day when the market is down 100 points. Other stocks are light on revenues. They go down 10% or more.</p>
<p>The market always sends mixed messages. There has never been a time when all the news is good. That's impossible. If all the news is all good, it means the economy is really thriving. Then investors worry about things being too strong, afraid that inflation will come back, so they sell stocks. When things seem totally awful (see 2008 and 2009 as examples), some investors see nothing but upside potential (see Warren Buffett and General Electric (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>) purchases), and they buy stocks. Most of the time, however, the news is good and bad. There is never a straight upward or downward line for the DJIA or for any stock for a long period of time unless the stock goes out of business, then the line is flat.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/27/comfort-zone-investing-keeping-cool-with-the-markets-mixed-mes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comfort Zone Investing: Keeping Cool with the Market's Mixed Messages</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/27/comfort-zone-investing-keeping-cool-with-the-markets-mixed-mes/">Comfort Zone Investing: Keeping Cool with the Market's Mixed Messages</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 27 Feb 2010 10:30:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says there is as extreme an aversion to discipline as he can recall. </span><br /><br /> If you want to know why it is so frustrating to be buying stocks up here think no further than the Goldman Sachs (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>) (<a href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=GS" target="blank">Cramer's Take</a>) push into the high-end retail stocks, a push that, even as flexible and chameleon-like that I am, I find flabbergasting. <br /><br /> All year the trade has been to be buying the recovery stocks, the companies that sell the most expensive goods, and abandon the dollar stocks which peaked last year in the midst of the worst recession since the 1930s. It was plain as day.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/17/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-this-frustrating-new-market/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cramer on BloggingStocks: This frustrating new market </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/17/cramer-on-bloggingstocks-this-frustrating-new-market/">Cramer on BloggingStocks: This frustrating new market </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 09:00:00 EST.
