Closing Bell: The Win from Left Field (BRK-B, KFT, MRK, SPG, RIGL)

This was one of those days where many of the same concerns over sovereign debt risk and international issues were there, but the market rallied as the fears were not broadcast at every media report. Commodities saw large gains as fears about Greece were not as predominant.

The 52-week high club

Rigel Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: RIGL): Sees good news on its rheumatoid arthritis drug. Jumps to $26.45 up from 52-week low of $6.64.

Savient Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: SVNT): Gets strong results from late stage trials for drug which effectively treated patients with gout. Shares move up to $18.58 from 52-week low of $10.58.

BioMarin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: BMRN): FDA approves company's new drug. Stock up to $30.49 and more after hours from 52-week low of $15.53.

Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: CCE): Has a strong earnings outlook for next year. Moves up to $26.83 from 52-week low of $19.78.

PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE: PEP): No news. Just a safe, successful place to put money. Up to $78.78 from 52-week low of $61.89.

Analyst initiations: Pharmaceutical stocks, RIGL and CELL

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Global pharmaceutical stocks, Rigel Pharmaceuticals and Brightpoint were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Bernstein initiated global pharmaceutical stocks with a Cautious view. The firm initiated Merck & Co Inc (NYSE: MRK), Schering Plough Corporation (NYSE: SGP) and Wyeth (NYSE: WYE) with Outperform ratings, as well as Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) and Eli Lilly & Company (NYSE: LLY) with Market Perform ratings.
  • CIBC resumed coverage of Rigel Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: RIGL) with a Sector Outperformer rating and $16 target. The firm expects near-term upside to be driven by positive phase 2 results of R788 in rheumatoid arthritis, expected in December, and thinks the company's strong scientific platform will support long-term appreciation.
  • Bear Stearns started Brightpoint Incorporated (NASDAQ: CELL) with an Outperform rating and $20 target, as they are positive on Brightpoint's merger with Dangaard given the significant synergies and diversification it provides.
