  • Wells Fargo upgraded Home Properties (HME) to outperform from market perform. The firm thinks that rental rate in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic are poised to increase, while Home Properties provides relatively cheap access to these markets.
  • Deutsche Bank upgraded VeriSign (VRSN) to buy from hold after the company sold its authentication business to Symantec (SYMC). The firm upped its target for VRSN shares to $35 from $25.
  • Macquarie upgraded Nexen (NXY) to outperform from neutral following the company's divestiture of its noncore heavy-oil properties in Western Canada.
  • UPS (UPS) was upgraded to buy from hold at Stifel Nicolaus.

Economic espionage comes to trial, first time with a jury

True entrepreneurs will go to any length to get their companies off the ground. And, they're known for accepting the consequences of the risks they take. Some businesses never make it to launch, never bring in a dime, never lead to that killer IPO. In even rarer cases, these adventures can put two people behind the defendants' table on charges of corporate espionage. Lan Lee, an American, and Yuefei Ge, a Chinese citizen, allegedly swiped computer chip blueprints and tried to gain Chinese government support for a startup using these illicit goods. Now, they could face up to 65 years on charges of corporate espionage.

Analyst upgrades:

  • Citigroup upgraded Cooper Industries (NYSE: CBE) to Buy from Hold on valuation as it believes commercial construction concerns are well known. The firm raised its target on shares to $40 from $37, and coupled the upgrade with a downgrade of Rockwell Automation (NYSE: ROK) to Sell from Hold.
  • Credit Suisse upgraded BJ Services (NYSE: BJS) to Neutral from Underperform following its acquisition by Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI). The firm raised its target to $17.
  • Credit Suisse also upgraded Amkor Technology (NASDAQ: AMKR) to Outperform from Neutral and raised its target to $8 from $7. The firm expects Amkor to benefit from near-term strength in the supply chain and the mix shift towards higher value packaging.
  • Textron (NYSE: TXT) was upgraded to Conviction Buy from Neutral at Goldman.
  • Siemens (NYSE: SI) was upgraded to Neutral from Sell at UBS.
  • Stanley Works (NYSE: SWK) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Janney Montgomery.

InterDigital (NASDAQ: IDCC) closed at $27.96. IDCC is scheduled to report Q2 EPS after the market close on July 28. August option implied volatility is at 62; September is at 53; near its 26-week average of 58; according to Track Data, suggesting decreasing price movement after EPS.

Rockwell (NYSE: ROK) closed at $39.61. ROK is expected to report Q3 EPS before the market open on July 30. ROK August option implied volatility is at 57, October is at 45; below 26-week of 59 according to Track Data, suggesting decreasing price movement after EPS.
