TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer is not convinced that what was bad a week ago has suddenly turned good.

Feels almost too good to be true. Once again, did we dodge the more than 3% to 5% decline? Once again have we put the trouble behind us? Did we have just enough October scare to inoculate?

I remember a week ago thinking there weren't enough "October's the roughest month" articles perhaps because those who wrote the "sell in May" and "sell in September" pieces felt chastised. I thought that the word had come from editors on high-stop being so bearish already.

But then by Thursday we were all well aware of the power of Rocktober and next thing you know people were whispering crash by Friday.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Can't trust a market too good to be true

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Can't trust a market too good to be true originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 09:00:00 EST. TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says those going overboard on the negative are finding their theories don't work.

It's time to talk about what did and what didn't happen when people came back from summer vacation.

First, what didn't happen. We didn't get a lot of selling by firms that were up a lot. We didn't get a September lock-in of gains -- too many funds behind the market, I imagine, too many funds where it would be too costly to get out. They didn't go away in September like they were supposed to.

Second, we didn't get the preannouncements that should have happened if the economy was already starting to wind down and nobody was buying anything. Housing didn't slow down after a California tax credit went away.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: I'm a believer

Cramer on BloggingStocks: I'm a believer originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 11 Sep 2009 09:30:00 EST. TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says maybe it's dull copy, but you never read about the positive drivers anymore.

The bulls have just put together a quiet but widespread rally that, once again, has gone unheralded or is regarded as unimportant.

But the slide that we look like we are going to have will quickly take on a huge significance, with lots of commentary about all of the usual fiascos and woes and worries. Maybe today we will make it "we don't have a strong president or a strong dollar" day. Or an "OPEC isn't going to get oil to $80" day.

Pick one. They all suit.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Negative stories get all the play

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Negative stories get all the play originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 09:50:00 EST. TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the action that is linked to the futures markets, such as oil, is distorting rational analysis.

Maybe one day we can escape the commodity linkage and begin to trade on the fundamentals again, something that seems more distant now than any time I can recall. We are totally marching to gold, to oil, to copper, and not the fundamentals.

Throughout the era in which China has become a superpower and hedge funds have become the super arbiters or what goes up or down, we have been stuck with this fairly bogus linkage that corrupts trading and makes a mockery out of some of the most important financial analysis out there, the actual attempts to discover what's really happening at companies.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Fundamental distortion

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Fundamental distortion originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 10:00:00 EST. TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the tech industry benefits because the Obama administration pays it little attention.

When you get a streak like technology's had here -- and I am including the Nasdaq as a barometer of tech, with its 11th consecutive positive close -- you have to ask yourself: Is there something going on that's even bigger than the visible themes? I'm talking something beyond low inventories for semis, new product cycles based on Internet mobile, and valuations that got out of hand to the downside.

And I think I have it.

Washington doesn't care about tech. Tech can do what it wants. Tech's not unionized, so Card Check and arbitration, the next battleground, doesn't affect it. Tech doesn't pollute much, so cap-and-trade doesn't mean much. Tech's not much for pensions or for any help from the government with health care. TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says the noise obscures the evidence that things are getting better.

Lotta sideshows out there.

The Chrysler sideshow held court Thursday, a total distraction magnified by President Barack Obama's finger-pointing. Given how small Chrysler is and how irrelevant it might ultimately be to the economy, it's a shame because there were so many good earnings reports that you might have missed by paying attention to Chrysler.

And, yes, I wish that the president had been more elegant in his finger-pointing about why Chrysler had to file. Most of the big banks were pro-Obama. Only some banks and hedge funds held out -- we now know them as the non-TARP banks -- and to them I ask, "What the heck were you thinking?" I think they, not Obama, are a bigger problem and I bet they make out far worse than they would have if they had just agreed with Obama's plan.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Sideshow distractions

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Sideshow distractions originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 01 May 2009 09:45:00 EST. It offers power amplifiers, front-end modules and integrated radio frequency devices for cellular handsets and makes a variety of linear products that support automotive, broadband, cellular infrastructure, industrial and medical applications. Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Sony (NYSE: SNE) are major customers.

The firm had good news for investors last week, when it reported Q1 EPS of 17 cents and revenues of $210.5 million. Analysts had been expecting 16 cents and $208.1 million. Management also guided Q2 EPS to 15 cents (13 cent consensus) and Q2 revenues to $200.0 million ($194.04M consensus). Regarding Q2, the CFO remarked that Skyworks expected to largely offset handset seasonality with growth from the linear products and the multimode handset content portfolios. The stock popped into a bullish "flag" consolidation pattern on the announcement. Prices frequently exit flags moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the issue with four "strong buys", seven "buys" and five "holds". Analysts expect a 23% growth rate, through the next year. The SWKS Price to Sales ratio (1.76), Price to Book ratio (1.64), Price to Cash Flow ratio (13.57) and EPS Growth rate (54.55%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutions own about 95 % of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 600 SmallCap Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $5.56 and $9.55. A stop-loss of $7.40 looks good here.

In the giving spirit of the holidays, here's a bonus pick for bargain-hunters looking for stocks under the $10 threshold. Skyworks Solutions (NASDAQ: SWKS), manufactures semiconductors that are used primarily in wireless telephone handsets and infrastructure products. Nearly 40% of the company's sales are thanks to Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Sony Ericsson Mobile.

The firm has been a solid performer in the earnings confessional of late, topping analysts' expectations consistently for the past five quarters, by an average surprise of nearly 15%. On November 1, the company reported fourth-quarter profit of $22 million, or 14 cents per share, a penny above Street expectations and a welcome change from a year-ago loss of $96.4 million (60 cents per share). Looking ahead to the current (first) quarter, SWKS officials targeted first-quarter profit -- excluding items -- of 15 to 17 cents per share.
Continue reading An 11th stock under $10: Skyworks Solutions

An 11th stock under $10: Skyworks Solutions originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 17:35:00 EST. Despite the stock's recent run, it still has much more upside because the company's solid numbers into next year are going to make the stock drastically more attractive.

Before I get too specific about the company itself, I'd like to first discuss the company's sector and why its going to be such a hot space in the next few months. Basically, the company's products are going to be in tremendous use in the next few quarters as a result of the launch of Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone and continued advancements to Research in Motion's (NASDAQ: RIMM) BlackBerry. These smart phones are going to be huge contributors to Skyworks's top line because they need the company's products to perform the more advanced tasks being placed on smart phones, such as WiFi and GPS. The positive headlines which I expect to be flowing from this sector shortly (starting with Apple's upcoming quarter) should bolster Skyworks's stock appropriately.

But this stock isn't just a name that will move due to positive news from the smart phone space; this is a solid company that's hitting an inflection (turning) point. Despite showing weak performance sequentially and year over year in recent years, I think the company's revenue growth is going to return to positive territory within the next two quarters. I think the company is going to do about $190 million in sales next quarter -- a sequential increase of about 8%, but still a year-over-year decline of 4.5%. This figure is ahead of company guidance, which I think is low because the company was overly conservative when modeling Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) impact on sales. This Motorola factor is another potential catalyst because the company has the potential to easily beat estimates if Motorola steps up its business. Even if Motorola actually doesn't do much business with the company, I think Skyworks will be able to cover that lost business with new clients, just like it did last quarter.

The company positioned itself properly for this quarter. Because it expected increased demand for its FEM chips, it ramped up its inventory for this quarter to be able to match the demand. I think the company easily met Apple and Research in Motion's needs for the quarter.

Continue reading Skyworks: More "mo" to go

Skyworks: More "mo" to go originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sun, 22 Jul 2007 13:40:00 EST.
