We estimate that Starbucks' company-owned stores constitute around 44% of our estimated $30.50 value for the company's stock while franchised stores generate an incremental 29%. Packaged Coffee, Tea & Other add a further 19%. Jobless claims rose again in the US, China's trade data was weak, headlines hit about demonstrators being fired upon in Saudi Arabia, and even lower oil prices failed to boost the mood. Treasury bond prices even rallied on a day when bond guru Bill Gross said he was effectively out of the Treasury buying now and on a day when we saw a record monthly government deficit, and gold was lower as the dollar rallied. Moody's also downgraded Spain yet again.
Single cup coffee roasters are growing in popularity, especially in business offices and waiting rooms. Naturally, coffee roasters like Green Mountain Coffee (GMCR) and Starbucks (SBUX) want a piece of the action.

The single cup roasters provide several advantages to having coffee in larger coffee pots. For one thing, coffee which sits for hours in a pot loses some of its fresh flavor or becomes bitter. Enter the single cup roaster. You simply pop a small container of coffee in the machine, and viola, you get a single cup of coffee with little or no mess, and always fresh.

Continue reading Starbucks and Green Mountain Coffee End Battle for Single Cup Roasters

Starbucks and Green Mountain Coffee End Battle for Single Cup Roasters originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 09:30:00 EST. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 47 points to 12,127.00 and futures on the S&P 500 stock index fell 7 points to 1,308.40. Kudos to you if you bought in at $22.50, you certainly have my respect.

The 52-week high for the stock is currently set at $34.79. At the time of this writing, shares were exchanging hands for $34.34. Is now the time to sell?
McDonald's owns and franchises restaurants across the globe with over 32,000 restaurants in 117 countries. Of these, roughly 80% were operated by franchisees, with the balance being company-owned. We estimate that franchisee rent & fees accounts for 62% of McDonald's stock value with franchisee royalties generating an additional 29%. Thirsty folks longing for a Big Gulp-style coffee beverage are in luck as the Seattle-based coffee chain is set to roll out its new "Trenta" size for iced drinks.

The new size, seven ounces bigger than the Venti, will be 31 ounces. Trenta, by the way, means "thirty" in Italian. Coffee and sugar are in the spotlight this week.

Processors who buy raw commodities and process them into consumer products are caught is in a price squeeze. On the one hand they must pay more for the raw product and on the other they are up against consumers who are cost conscious.

Continue reading Tight Sugar and Coffee Supplies Boost Prices

Tight Sugar and Coffee Supplies Boost Prices originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 18 Dec 2010 11:40:00 EST. Add in higher ISM data and higher jobs data than expected, along with predictions of solid retail numbers, and we had a huge rally. A gain of more than 200 points qualifies as a huge day.
SBUX recently scrapped a contract with Kraft (KFT), who had previously provided Starbucks products to grocery stores. SBUX thinks the consumer packaged goods business should grow faster than its retail cafes. Investors are also enthused about the company's plan to expand its Chinese presence. by If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on SBUX.

SBUX opened this morning at $31.01. So far today the stock has hit a low of $20.95 and a high of $31.79. As of 12:10, SBUX is trading at $31.78 up $1.18 (3.8%). The chart for SBUX looks neutral and S&P gives SBUX a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.
Continue reading Starbucks CEO Outlines Acquisition Plans

Starbucks CEO Outlines Acquisition Plans originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 01 Dec 2010 13:30:00 EST. As part of the agreement, Kraft distributed Starbucks bagged coffee and the Seattle's Best brand in supermarkets and other food retailers. The agreement dates back to 1998 and has grown to $500 million in annual sales (initially the deal net sales of $50 million).

The intentions were made public by Starbucks last night. The latest salvo fired in this java jive is a mere continuation of a fight that has included both companies accusing each other of having "improperly characterized the terms of the pact." According to Kraft, it requires Starbucks to pay the fair-market value of the business along with a premium in "certain instances."

Continue reading Starbucks and Kraft May Part Ways

Starbucks and Kraft May Part Ways originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 15:30:00 EST.
