Chasing Value: Wells Fargo, a Seinfeld Episode?

When dealing with large companies, have you ever felt you were living through a scene from a Seinfeld episode?

In January Wells Fargo (WFC) completed a majority of its integration with Wachovia, and I fear it will take years working out the bugs in the system. I say this because I am a major client, shareholder and trader dealing with the company on numerous levels, and the past few weeks would be comedic if not so infuriating.

Halloween stocks offer investors a chance at financial treats

Halloween, though not the blockbuster holiday that Christmas is, still results in some additional spending on the part of consumers as they stock up on candy and costumes, and maybe take in a scary movie or two. With those treats in mind here are some stocks that may give investors sweet dreams -- and hopefully not nightmares.

As is well known, candy is all the rage at Halloween, and among the largest candy stocks are Hershey Co. (NYSE: HSY) and Cadbury PLC (NYSE: CBY). Last week, Hershey reported third-quarter earnings rose 30% despite weaker volumes affected by higher prices for its sweets. Last year's numbers also included special charges. Still the company said it expects full-year earnings to be ahead of Wall Street forecasts. In 2010, the Pennsylvania company said it expects earnings excluding items to rise 6% to 8%. The stock has a forward-looking price-to-earnings ratio of 16 and a current dividend yield of 3.1%.

No soup for you? 'Seinfeld's' soup inspiration in trouble

Known for some of the best soup recipes on the island of Manhattan and immortalized in a famous 1995 episode of Seinfeld, the "Original SoupMan," may find himself in a soup kitchen of a different kind if his chain's financial troubles persist.

Al Yeganeh was reportedly the real-life inspiration for Seinfeld's uncharitably nicknamed "Soup Nazi" (portrayed by Larry Thomas), who refused service to George Costanza and Elaine Benes. Yeganeh was not interested in profiting off the Seinfeld name, however, discouraging employees from referencing the sitcom and frowning upon his supposed "nickname."

While he is known for his tight-ship practices and regimented way of doing business, he is also known for his exquisite varieties of soup. But even the best crab bisque, turkey chili or even Mulligatawny may not be able to save the Original SoupMan chain from angry franchisees and frustrated customers.
