AOL's Breakout Sparks Heavy Call Buying

AOL Inc. (AOL) attracted the attention of call buyers on Wednesday, according to data from the International Securities Exchange (ISE). During the course of yesterday's session, option players on the ISE bought to open 5,428 calls on AOL, compared to just 106 puts -- netting the stock a lopsided single-day call/put volume ratio of 51.21.

However, this surge in call activity was just more of the same for AOL (which is the parent company of BloggingStocks). The equity has racked up a 10-day ISE call/put volume ratio of 9.43, which ranks higher than roughly 79% of other such readings taken during the previous year. This elevated percentile rank indicates that option traders on the ISE are snapping up bullish bets over bearish at a faster clip than usual.

Can Crocs Continue Its Quest for New Highs?

On Thursday, the shares of Crocs, Inc. (CROX) shuffled to a new 52-week high for the second time in as many sessions. The equity topped out at $8.47 on an intraday basis, marking its best price since July 2008. But with the stock hovering near a 20-month peak, can the shares continue to climb -- or are they due for a pullback?

If today's drop of more than 2% is any indication, it seems that CROX's positive momentum is cooling. The stock's Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 63, not far from overbought territory, so this modest retreat isn't terribly surprising.

Synovus Financial Slides on SEC Inquiry

Late Tuesday, Synovus Financial (SNV) confessed that it's facing an informal inquiry by the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). In a regulatory filing, Synovus disclosed that the SEC is attempting "to determine whether any person or entity has violated the federal securities laws." The financial firm was first informed of the informal investigation in a letter from the SEC dated Dec. 15, 2009.

Synovus said it intends to cooperate fully with the SEC's inquiry, but declined to provide further information on the matter. "We cannot discuss any details of the informal inquiry," explained spokesman Gregory Hudgison. "As stated in our public filings, the SEC has not asserted that Synovus or any person or entity has committed any securities violations."

Speculation Heats Up on P.F. Chang's China Bistro Ahead of Earnings

Call volume is unusually heavy today on P.F. Chang's China Bistro (PFCB), as the restaurant chain prepares to unleash its fourth-quarter earnings results next Wednesday. So far, more than 2,500 of these bullishly oriented options have crossed the tape, representing roughly seven times PFCB's expected call volume.

The day's most popular strike is the February 45 call, with more than 2,200 contracts changing hands on open interest of 4,177 contracts. Several sizable blocks have changed hands at the ask price, suggesting that traders are buying new calls at this out-of-the-money strike today.

Heavy Pessimism on YRC Worldwide Ahead of 4Q Earnings

YRC Worldwide (YRCW) is preparing to release its fourth-quarter results, with the company's earnings report scheduled to hit Wall Street before the market opens on Friday, Feb. 5. Analysts are expecting YRCW to swallow a loss of $1.74 per share, wider than the company's year-ago loss of $1.63 per share.

The transportation issue has fallen short of consensus earnings expectations in each of the previous four quarters, which may explain why bearish speculation is on the rise in the days leading up to YRCW's report.

Bears Brace for a Pullback from MGM Mirage

Last Friday, MGM Mirage (MGM) was heavily targeted by put players, with bearishly oriented option volume rising to more than twice the usual level. About 30,000 puts crossed the tape during the course of the session, compared to MGM's typical put volume of just 13,000 contracts.

The International Securities Exchange (ISE) reports that traders on Friday bought to open 5,064 puts on MGM, compared to just 1,009 calls. In other words, traders purchased roughly five times more puts than calls.

In fact, MGM now sports a 10-day ISE put/call volume ratio of 1.25, which ranks higher than 97.5% of other such readings taken during the past year. This lofty ratio reveals that speculative investors have rarely scooped up puts over calls at a faster pace.

Vivus Rallies on Positive Avanifil for Erectile Dysfunction Trial

VIVUS Inc. (VVUS) is on the upswing today, after the company reported positive results from a late-stage trial of its treatment for erectile dysfunction. Not only does avanifil result in a surprisingly high "magnitude of success in the first 15 minutes," but the treatment was also well-tolerated. The company noted that "there were no drug-related serious adverse events in the study," and added that there were low rates of common side effects, including headache and flushing.

VIVUS is entering a crowded market with its erectile dysfunction drug, with heavyweights such as Viagra and Cialis boasting substantial market share. However, "Knowing that avanafil can be effective within 15 minutes should create an attractive position in the PDE5 market," asserted Charles Bowden, M.D., who serves as senior director of clinical development.

Shorts Hedge Their Bets Ahead of Mosaic's 2Q Earnings

Shares of Mosaic Company (MOS) rallied to a new 52-week high today, topping out at $63.83 in intraday action. The stock seems to be enjoying a halo lift after sector peer Potash Corp./Saskatchewan (POT) was upgraded, but the spotlight will turn to Mosaic after today's closing bell, when the company is slated to unveil its fiscal second-quarter earnings.

Mosaic's performance on the earnings front has been mixed, with the fertilizer firm falling short of analysts' consensus expectations during three of the past four reporting periods. Ahead of tonight's release, analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are expecting a second-quarter profit of 35 cents per share, on average, down from Mosaic's year-ago profit of $1.12 per share. Sales are expected to ring in at $1.68 billion.

Shorts hedge their bets ahead of FuelCell Energy's 4Q report

FuelCell Energy(FCEL) is scheduled to release its fiscal fourth-quarter results after the closing bell tonight. Ahead of the report, analysts are expecting FCEL to report a loss of 19 cents per share, up from its year-ago loss of 35 cents per share. Sales for the fourth quarter are expected to arrive at $28 million.

Historically, FCEL has a relatively solid track record in the earnings spotlight. The firm fell short of Wall Street's consensus expectations with last year's fourth-quarter report, but it has reported narrower-than-expected quarterly losses in each of the three successive quarters.

Washington Post closes the last of its U.S. bureaus

As print media continues its prolonged death throes, The Washington Post Company (WPO) announced late Tuesday that it will shut down its U.S. bureaus in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Six journalists will be affected by the closures, and all will be offered jobs in Washington. Three news aides in the bureaus will be offered severance.

As a result of the move, the Post will no longer have any journalists on staff outside its home base of Washington, D.C. In a memo to staffers, Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli explained that the newspaper must focus its journalistic efforts on its own turf.

Sprint Nextel scores upgrade, pays off $1B loan

Sprint Nextel (S) reported this morning that it paid off an outstanding loan worth $1 billion on its $4.5 billion revolving credit facility. As a result, the wireless company no longer has an outstanding balance on its revolving credit facility. At the end of the third quarter, Sprint had $5.9 billion on hand in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, plus $1.6 billion in borrowing capacity under its revolving bank credit facility.

In other Sprint news this morning, Sprint shares were upped from "neutral" to "outperform" at Credit Suisse. Analyst Jonathan Chaplin set his price target at $6, asserting that the company will benefit from cost cutting, stronger sales of prepaid service, and improved customer retention trends. Sprint's stock settled Friday at $3.10, so Chaplin's price target implies expected upside of nearly 94%.

Costco Wholesale surges after topping 4Q expectations

Wall Street is cheering the latest earnings report from Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST), with the shares adding more than 3% within the first hour of trading. This morning, as Tom Johansmeyer reported, the wholesale club reported a 6% slide in fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, but the results nevertheless exceeded analysts' expectations.

In the wake of COST's report, analyst Brian Sozzi of Wall Street Strategies reiterated his Buy rating and $66 price target on the equity. "In our view, 4Q09 will go a long way in supporting a higher valuation for Costco," wrote Sozzi in a research note this morning. "The company has managed to control costs, drive traffic to its warehouses consistently throughout the economic downturn, paid $300 million in annual dividends in FY09 (payout ratio of 26.0% second to only Wal-Mart in the sector), and has catalysts on the horizon to showcase earnings power above currently modeled for consensus EPS."

Earnings preview: Shorts seem nervous ahead of PepsiCo's 3Q

Snacks-and-soda stalwart PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE: PEP) is scheduled to unveil its third-quarter results before the market opens this Thursday, Oct. 8. Heading into the report, analysts are expecting PEP to bank a profit of $1.02 per share, according to Thomson Reuters, fractionally lower than its year-ago earnings of $1.06 per share.

PepsiCo has a healthy history in the earnings spotlight, having exceeded Wall Street's consensus expectations in each of the previous three quarters. Judging by recent option activity, traders are speculating on another upside surprise from the Frito-Lay firm.

Activision Blizzard booted from Conviction Buy list

Bright and early this morning, Goldman Sachs downgraded gaming guru Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI) from Conviction Buy to Buy. In a note to clients, the brokerage firm explained that it sees greater relative potential for near-term price appreciation in other stocks. Goldman maintains a six-month price target of $16 on ATVI, implying expected upside of more than 29% from the shares' closing price on Wednesday.

ATVI is a ripe target for downgrades, if only because analysts are so lopsidedly optimistic toward the "Guitar Hero" parent. Zacks reports that the equity has attracted no fewer than 18 Strong Buy recommendations, plus two Buys -- with not a single Hold, Sell, or Strong Sell to be found.
