Although our friend and pal Bill Gates has made a gaffe or two in his time -- like
predicting downplaying the future of the Internet in his 1995 book
The
Road Ahead -- Microsoft has the guts (and the glory) to always turn the corner at a blistering pace when its
dominance is challenged. There's nothing like good ole' innovation to ensure the top players in the industry stay on
their toes. Everything is kept in check, innovation wins the day and the very premise of capitalism thrives for the
world to see. Call it
another day in paradise.
So, what was old Billy smiling at in this 1976
booking shot from the Albuquerque police department? Was he seeing the future in 2006 and beyond, knowing that
Microsoft would conquer all-things-computer, only to face
stiffer-than-thou challenges by a small little open
playground we all call the world wide web? What was he smiling about, after all?
When Microsoft
hired Ray Ozzie
recently, they inherited a new genius brain (at the perfect time) and turned a rather quiet --
but hugely
important -- corner into turning its proprietary, locally-installed software into mere access over the
Internet.
