Why shouldn't Vijay Singh keep wearing his Stanford Financial hat?

Back in February, I wrote about one of the stranger elements of the Stanford Financial ponzi scheme scandal: PGA Tour star Vijay Singh was still wearing his Stanford Financial hat, as though nothing had happened.

It turns out he's still wearing it, and the New York Post explains why:

Nope, the word is that Singh is just stubborn and -- here's a word you don't hear often these days -- loyal. And, oddly enough, I find that sort of refreshing even if the allegiance is to an alleged thief.

Singh's representatives say "Vijay is staying with the status quo until there is something more definitive re: Stanford." Hats off to him.

IRS says it was ripped off by Stanford too

If the allegations are to be believed, Robert Allen Stanford ripped off his investors to the tune of $8 billion and managed to cheat the IRS out of its cut of his ill-gotten gains as well.

The IRS has asked a judge to allow it to continue its efforts to collect $226.6 million in back taxes -- and there may be more to come because Stanford still hasn't filed his 2007 tax return.

Maybe I'm naive in the ways of massive fraud and its tax implications, but here's what I don't understand: Thousands of investors are in all probability out billions of dollars because of Mr. Stanford's alleged conduct. Given that, every penny that the IRS collects from him represents a penny that won't be available to his victims.

Johnny Damon ensnared in Stanford Financial scandal

With Stanford Financial in limbo as regulators pounce and assets are frozen, at least two Major League Baseball stars are facing some serious financial problems.

FoxSports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Yankees center fielder Johnny Damon doesn't have enough money to pay his trainer and Mets star Xavier Nady hasn't been able to purchase an apartment in New York. Apparently their money is tied up in the Stanford mess, and they don't have access to it -- at least for now.

Stanford Financial as drug money launderer?

The Stanford Financial scandal continues to get more complicated and, well, just plain weird.

First, there is the somewhat amusing news that professional golfer Vijay Singh will continue to wear the Stanford Financial logo on his hat, shirt, and bag -- even after the SEC charged the company with operating a massive Ponzi scheme as U.S. Marshalls raided the company's offices. Singh told Reuters that "we are assuming alot. Nothing is guilty unless it is proven. It's all assumption at the moment."

Indeed: And I'm assuming that Singh will live to regret his endorsement deal with Stanford.
