(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) has traded in a narrow range over the last year. The 52-week low is $17.45 while the 52-week high is $25. The stock closed today at $20.90, up a mere 0.2%. Volume was very heavy. <br />
<br />
The market had an earnings report from the office-supply retailer to evaluate this session. According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/staples-net-income-rises-in-4q/499877/">Associated Press</a>, fourth-quarter net profit came in at an adjusted 39 cents per share. Unfortunately, analysts wanted two more pennies for the bottom line. The top line also failed to deliver a beat.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/staples-buy-or-sell-after-q4-release/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Staples: Buy or Sell After Q4 Release?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/staples-buy-or-sell-after-q4-release/">Staples: Buy or Sell After Q4 Release?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 17:45:00 EST. (<a injectedlink="" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>) is recently down 1% due to Rajat Gupta (who served on the boards of Goldman Sachs and Procter &amp; Gamble (<a injectedlink="" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-procter-and-gamble-company/pg/nys">PG</a>) both), having been charged by the SEC in an insider trading scheme. </p>
<p>GS March 155 and 160 puts were active. March and July put option implied volatility of 27 is near its 26-week average of 29 according to Track Data. Large put volume suggests traders hedging for downside price movement. </p>
<p>Staples, Inc. (<a injectedlink="" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) March call option implied volatility is at 37, June is at 29 according to Track Data, compared to its 26-week average of 28, suggesting larger near-term movement into Q4 results on March 2.</p>

(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) $17 bottom, discussed in September, to scoop-up more shares, you made the correct move. <br />
<br />
Office supplies chain giant Staples Inc., first discussed here <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/04/21/getting-ahead-of-the-pack-with-staples/">on April 21, 2008</a>, at a price of $22.11, has moved smartly higher, and I still like the shares at this stage. <br />
<br />
Staples will likely post FY2012 sales growth of 4% to 6%, after a 2% to 3% increase in FY2011.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/27/staples-still-undervalued-at-23/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Staples: Still Undervalued at $23?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/27/staples-still-undervalued-at-23/">Staples: Still Undervalued at $23?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 27 Dec 2010 14:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) here on April 21, 2008, at a price of $22.11. The question now is, has the office supplies chain giant put in a bottom near $17? The calculation here is that it has.</p>
<p>Look for Staples to post FY2011 sales growth of 2% to 4%, after a 5.2% increase in FY2010.</p>
<p>Staples should open about 40 net new stores this <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Fiscal%20Year,FY">fiscal year</a>, to total about 2,500, with both U.S., and international zones gaining stores. About 1,000 of Staples stores are located outside the U.S., with Canada (316) and Europe (about 190) hosting the bulk.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/27/has-staples-put-in-a-bottom-at-17/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Has Staples Put in a Bottom at $17?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/27/has-staples-put-in-a-bottom-at-17/">Has Staples Put in a Bottom at $17?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 12:30:00 EST. <p>Goldman Sachs -- citing the firm's growing <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Market%20Share">market share</a> and moves to buy back stock -- recently placed Staples on its Conviction Buy List and raised its <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Price%20Target">price target</a> from $22 to $23.</p>
<p>Of course, the stock is going to have to break out of the <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Downtrend">downtrend</a> it has been in for the past few months before this looks like an attractive technical trade, but the fundamentals are starting to line up.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/09/staples-an-easy-button-to-profits/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Staples: An 'Easy Button' to Profits?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/09/staples-an-easy-button-to-profits/">Staples: An 'Easy Button' to Profits?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 14:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) reported first quarter earnings of <a href="http:// http://phx.corporate-ir.net/External.File?item=UGFyZW50SUQ9NDY5OTF8Q2hpbGRJRD0tMXxUeXBlPTM=&amp;t=1">28 cents</a>, above the Thomson/Reuters First Call estimate of <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ae?s=spls">27 cents</a>, and at least initially, that was enough to satisfy investors, despite the company's subdued sales outlook. <br />
<br />
Staples shares were up 24 cents to $21.78 in late Thursday afternoon trading -- this despite <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dow-jones-industrial-average/$indu/dji">a Dow</a> that was down more than 250 points on lingering concern about European government debt.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/20/staples-decent-q1-but-are-shares-ready-to-rise/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Staples: Decent Q1, but Are Shares Ready to Rise?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/20/staples-decent-q1-but-are-shares-ready-to-rise/">Staples: Decent Q1, but Are Shares Ready to Rise?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 20 May 2010 17:20:00 EST. The jobless claims went up 25,000 when they were only supposed to change by a few thousand, leading many to fear that the jobs market is not really recovering at all. And oil was hit hard during the day on the contract roll-date. A late day sell-off took away any great hopes of recovery and set up a tone for a bad Friday with options expiration. <br />

<ul>
    <li>JPMorgan upgraded Anadarko Petroleum (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/anadarko-petroleum-corporation/apc/nys">APC</a>) to overweight from neutral on valuation as it views the recent pullback in shares as excessive. Despite upgrading, the firm lowered its target for shares to $82 from $90.</li>
    <li>Oppenheimer upgraded Office Depot (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/office-depot-inc/odp/nys">ODP</a>) to perform from underperform and upped its target for shares to $7 from $3 after raising its estimates for companies in the Office Products Retail space. The firm expects trends to accelerate for the sector due to moderating unemployment pressures. In conjunction with the upgrade, Opco raised its target for OfficeMax (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/officemax-incorporated/omx/nys">OMX</a>) to $26 from $21 and target for Staples (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>) to $30 from $28. Both stocks remain outperform rated.</li>
    <li>C.K. Cooper upgraded iRobot (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/irobot-corporation/irbt/nas">IRBT</a>) to buy from hold with a $30 price target following the company's analyst day.</li>

    <li>Vodafone (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/vodafone-group-plc-american-depositary-shares-each-representing-ten-ordinary-shares/vod/nas">VOD</a>) was upgraded to neutral from reduce at Nomura.</li>

The stock is also well below the 52-week high of $9.19. What do the technical and fundamental factors tell us about the potential of this investment idea?</p>
<p>They're not telling us comforting things, in my opinion. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/office-depot-inc/odp/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> doesn't look too bad. Like many other one-year charts, it shows a company that wants to head higher, albeit in a choppy way.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/28/avoid-office-depot-for-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Should Investors Avoid Office Depot for Now?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/28/avoid-office-depot-for-now/">Should Investors Avoid Office Depot for Now?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 28 Apr 2010 16:40:00 EST. In afternoon trading, the stock was bid higher by over 6%, with awesome volume backing the trade.
<p> According to the <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/staples-inc-announces-third-quarter-2009-performance/rfid276010796?channel=pf">press release</a>, total sales decreased 6%. Earnings per diluted share declined as well, dropping 7% on an adjusted basis to 39 cents. (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/staples-inc/spls/nas">SPLS</a>), whose website had trouble keeping up with the crush of <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/_aol/story/10633722/1/staples-website-buckles-on-black-friday.html">Black Friday traffic</a>, is scheduled to discuss its third quarter 2009 financial results in a conference call Tuesday, December 1, at 8:00 AM ET. <p>During the three months that ended in October, <a href="http://www.gurufocus.com/news.php?id=71133">Staples executives sold shares</a> and the company was named one of the world's <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/10/20/the-100-hardest-working-brands-in-the-world/">100 hardest working brands</a>. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect the world's biggest office supply superstore operator to report that earnings for that period fell 9.5% from a year ago to $0.38 per share. Revenue for the quarter is expected to be 7.3% lower to $6.5 billion.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/30/staples-earnings-preview-shrinking-profit-seen-as-stock-hits-52/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Staples earnings preview: Shrinking profit seen as stock hits 52-week high</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/30/staples-earnings-preview-shrinking-profit-seen-as-stock-hits-52/">Staples earnings preview: Shrinking profit seen as stock hits 52-week high</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 30 Nov 2009 16:20:00 EST.
