Once loathe to make large buys, the company has acquired storage provider EqualLogic in the recent past, a sign that the world's second-largest PC maker sees a bright future for corporate storage. No, we're not talking those 10'x20' rentals for the boat, but for digital storage, as in hard drives.

Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVAD) purchased StorageTek a few years ago, and then IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) bought NovusCG just recently, so storage technology and solutions providing is apparently a hot ticket these days. Dell, one to spend hardly anything on any company compared to the competition, spent $1.4 billion for EqualLogic.
Continue reading Dell to become aggressive force in data storage?

Dell to become aggressive force in data storage? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 16 Nov 2007 14:01:00 EST. Schwartz said yesterday that the open-source and server company plans to increase its focus on storage products and services using an internal reorganization to do so.

For this, Schwartz wants to merge the server and storage business units into a single unit focusing on storage and server convergence. In effect, Sun wants to sell and service more storage systems to make up for the lack of margin in its server business. At least, that's how many are reading this move. Since acquiring StorageTek years ago, this move was anticipated. It's now here.

In addition to making StorageTek's product lineup more profitable to the company, Schwartz also may be making the move to fall in line with "virtual server" trends in the information technology field. In a sense, customers don't care about buying servers or storage, but are interested in possibly "renting" a virtual server and storage system that acts as a single unit. This is precisely what Sun will try to push to customers as it slowly dumps aging mainframes.

According to Schwartz, Sun "wants to be in a position to innovate on its [customers'] behalf, at the system level, beyond the boxes -- across blades [servers], racks, disk and tape." Let's see if this recent internal reorg and change in customer philosophy will have a positive revenue effect for Sun -- something it desperately needs.
Sun Microsystems (JAVA) to reorganize, focus on storage business originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 16:05:00 EST. Gross margins came in at 44.5% versus expectations of 45.2%.

I think it is too early to jump into Sun's stock. Sun acquired a company called StorageTek a few years ago which contributes a lot of revenue for the server manufacturer, this business will also show weakness as demand for enterprise technology continues to weaken.

Sun also raised a boat load of capital recently from private equity, most likely to be used for a large acquisition. Typically, Sun's business does not turnaround quickly. I'd wait for revenue and some news on what it is going to do with all this cash before getting into this stock.
Sun posts poor results, muted guidance originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 14:10:00 EST.
