<p>The supermarket operator reported a third-quarter loss of 95 cents per share ($202 million) compared to a profit of 51 cents per share ($109 million) a year ago. The recent third quarter includes write-downs of $1.19 per share ($252 million) and was impacted by weaker sales and margins. The firm's quarterly revenue dropped 5.9% to $8.67 billion, which is a sour follow up to the 9.5% drop from a year ago.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/11/supervalu-plummets-on-q3-loss/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SuperValu Plummets Thanks to Quarterly Loss</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/11/supervalu-plummets-on-q3-loss/">SuperValu Plummets Thanks to Quarterly Loss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. Excluding one-time items, SVU earned 28 cents per share on revenue of $8.66 billion, missing analysts' earnings forecast of 29 cents per share on revenue of $8.74 billion. SVU also cut its 2011 EPS forecast to a range of $1.40 to $1.60, down from a previous range of $1.75 to $1.95 per share. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on SVU.<br />
<br />
This morning, SVU opened at $11.20. So far today the stock has hit a high of $11.50 and a low of $10.56. As of 12:15, SVU is trading at $10.96, down $1.44 (-11.5%). The chart for SVU looks neutral and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.iotogo.com/spoutlookonline">S&amp;P</a> gives SVU a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/19/supervalu-misses-q2-estimates-cuts-2011-forecast/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SuperValu Misses Q2 Estimates, Cuts 2011 Forecast</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/19/supervalu-misses-q2-estimates-cuts-2011-forecast/">SuperValu Misses Q2 Estimates, Cuts 2011 Forecast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 19 Oct 2010 13:30:00 EST. So a question going in to FedEx's fiscal first-quarter report this week is whether the company is still a bellwether.</p>
<p>For the three months that ended in August, when FedEx opened distribution hubs in <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/fedex-ground-celebrates-opening-of-new-chicago-distribution-hub/rfid230022711?channel=pf">Chicago</a> and <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/fedex-ground-celebrates-opening-of-new-toledo-distribution-hub/rfid236177240?channel=pf">Toledo</a> and declared a <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/fedex-corp-board-declares-quarterly-dividend/rfid241629833?channel=pf">quarterly dividend</a>, analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for it to report that earnings fell 60.2% from a year ago to $0.49 per share. That's also down 23.4% from the previous quarter, as well as less than the recently updated outlook. First quarter revenue is expected to be down 18.3% from a year ago to $8.2 billion.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/09/13/the-week-in-preview-is-fedex-still-a-bellwether/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Is FedEx still a bellwether?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/09/13/the-week-in-preview-is-fedex-still-a-bellwether/">The week in preview: Is FedEx still a bellwether?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 13 Sep 2009 12:30:00 EST. Not much came of it, though. The stock, as of this writing, isn't doing much in afternoon trading. Too bad for shareholders, because the bottom line beat the analysts.
<p> </p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/22/kroger-kr-first-quarter-earnings-preview/">earnings preview</a> from Michael Fowlkes, Kroger was expected to deliver around 61 cents per share. Well, Kroger earned 66 cents per share. The number improved last year's performance by 8 cents. Revenues were essentially flat. Same-store sales increased a little over 3%. When you think about it, Kroger did pretty well. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/23/kroger-increases-profit-and-beats-estimates-but-im-not-a-buyer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kroger increases profit and beats estimates, but I'm not a buyer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/06/23/kroger-increases-profit-and-beats-estimates-but-im-not-a-buyer/">Kroger increases profit and beats estimates, but I'm not a buyer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 23 Jun 2009 15:30:00 EST. <p>In fact, reports in the last few days have, for the most part, reflected lower results than had been projected by the companies and the analysts following them.</p>
<p>The first read of the third-quarter results for <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/Supervalu-incorporated/svu/nys">Supervalu</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/Supervalu-incorporated/svu/nys">SVU</a>) appeared to confirm that the company was performing consistent with the trends. SVU reported a loss of $13.95 per share, mostly resulting from a $3.3 billion charge for the writedown of goodwill and other intangible assets.</p>
<p>The reality is, however, that Supervalu is performing better than many of their competitors, such as <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">Wal-Mart</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>), which reported sales and earnings well below expectations. </p>
<p>In its report to investors, SVU lowered its guidance for the full fiscal 2009 year to reflect the impact of higher commodity prices and <a href="http://www.optionszone.com/trading-ideas/2008/12/worst-consumer-spending-outlook-on-record.html">cautious consumer spending</a>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/09/supervalu-svu-still-super/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Supervalu (SVU) still super</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/09/supervalu-svu-still-super/">Supervalu (SVU) still super</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 13:00:00 EST. <p><img alt="" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.bloggingstocks.com/media/2009/01/constellationbrands160.gif" align="right" vspace="4" border="1" />For the quarter ended Nov. 30, <strong>Constellation Brands</strong> posted <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles?id=n20090107164909990026&amp;cid=1183">a profit of $83.5 million</a>, or 38 cents a share, down 30.9% from a year earlier. Excluding one-time restructuring and acquisition-related charges and other special items, the world's biggest winemaker by volume earned $132 million, or 60 cents a share. </p>
<p>Sales were hurt by the stronger dollar, slipping 7.1% to $1.31 billion, with net sales excluding excise taxes falling 6% to $1.03 billion. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters had expected earnings of 59 cents a share on sales of $1.13 billion.</p>
<p>Citing the impact of the economic downturn on its key markets, the company lowered the upper end its 2009 adjusted profit outlook to between $1.68 per share and $1.72 per share.</p>
<p>Shares fell on Wednesday by $1.39, or 8.2%, to close at $15.48, but regained much of that in afterhours trading. In the past three months, the share price has fallen 10.7%.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/08/constellation-brands-falls-supervalu-rises-after-q3-reports/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Constellation Brands falls, Supervalu rises after Q3 reports</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/08/constellation-brands-falls-supervalu-rises-after-q3-reports/">Constellation Brands falls, Supervalu rises after Q3 reports</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 07:10:00 EST. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are expecting to see strong earnings growth from fertilizer producer <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-mosaic-company/mos/nys">Mosaic Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-mosaic-company/mos/nys">MOS</a>), biotech giant <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/monsanto-company/mon/nys">Monsanto Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/monsanto-company/mon/nys">MON</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/neogen-corporation/neog/nas">Neogen Corp.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/neogen-corporation/neog/nas">NEOG</a>), which produces food safety and animal health products. Mosaic's estimated earnings per share of $1.43 for the fiscal second quarter would be 41.9% higher than a year ago, and its revenue estimate of $3.0 billion is 36.7% higher. Monsanto's $0.59 per share projection for the fiscal first quarter is 22.0% higher and sales of $2.4 billion are up 14.9%. And Neogen's second-quarter $0.25 per share would be 12.0% higher, while its sales of $32.3 million are up 18.6%. All three have tended to beat expectations in recent quarters, and all three have buy recommendations from a consensus of analysts. <a href="http://ir.mosaicco.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=70455&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1235347&amp;highlight=">Mosaic</a> and <a href="http://monsanto.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&amp;item=669">Monsanto</a> have recently announced dividends, and their share prices have fallen 62.3% and 39.0%, respectively, from a year ago. The share price of Neogen, which recently <a href="http://www.neogen.com/Corporate/PR2008/2008-12-11.html">announced share buybacks</a>, is only 0.8% lower.</p>
<p>Other companies expected to post modest earnings gains when they report this week include education company <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apollo-group-inc/apol/nas">Apollo Group Inc.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/apollo-group-inc/apol/nas">APOL</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wd-40-company/wdfc/nas">WD-40 Co.</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wd-40-company/wdfc/nas">WDFC</a>), and wine and spirits maker <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/constellation-brands-inc/stz/nys">Constellation Brands Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/constellation-brands-inc/stz/nys">STZ</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/04/the-week-in-preview-family-dollar-bed-bath-and-beyond-kb-home/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Family Dollar, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, KB Home, and others</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/01/04/the-week-in-preview-family-dollar-bed-bath-and-beyond-kb-home/">The week in preview: Family Dollar, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, KB Home, and others</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 04 Jan 2009 12:30:00 EST. Net sales unfortunately didn't budge much at all. They came in essentially flat at $10.2 billion. Earnings per share on an adjusted basis were $0.61. According to this <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idINN1450878420081014?rpc=33&amp;sp=true">article</a>, the expectations were for $0.69 per share. So, as can be seen, Supervalu lost the analyst-expectations game by a wide margin. Last year's adjusted earnings were $0.64 per share. Not only are those numbers disappointing, but comps saw a decrease of over 1%. And the gross margin suffered as well. </p>
<p>So, we have an earnings miss, flat revenue growth, and a decline in the bottom line. What does all that add up to in terms of market reaction? The stock sees a bid. At the time I began writing this piece, it was up 2.5%. As I found with <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/09/16/kroger-beats-in-q2-is-it-a-defensive-play/">Kroger</a>, the market may be looking at supermarket businesses as defensive plays. Of course, at the time I covered Kroger, that company's numbers were a lot better than Supervalu's.</p>
<p>However, last time I checked the stock before sending this piece in, it was becoming more volatile along with the market, moving from green to red in quick succession. Given the weak data, I can't say that I'd be considering Supervalu right now. It is true that people will continue to shop at supermarkets even during economic downturns, but I'd rather look at something the supermarket sells as opposed to the supermarket itself to get defensive. I'd rather align my portfolio with the stronger brand equity of perhaps a <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc/kft/nys">Kraft</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc/kft/nys">KFT</a>) or a <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-procter-and-gamble-company/pg/nys">Procter &amp; Gamble</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-procter-and-gamble-company/pg/nys">PG</a>) than a Supervalu. </p>

I didn't expect that one. That's the best -- it's a shocker. I can't recall how many years it has been since I have seen the words "well below" and "Costco" together. <br /><br /> You can see how it happened: Costco held out. They didn't raise prices. Almost everyone else is raising prices and many are losing customers -- look at <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/safeway-inc/swy/nys">Safeway</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/safeway-inc/swy/nys">SWY</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=SWY">Cramer's Take</a>) or <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/supervalu-incorporated/svu/nys">Supervalu</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/supervalu-incorporated/svu/nys">SVU</a>) (<a target="blank" href="http://find.thestreet.com/cgi-bin/texis/cramertake_free?site=tsc&amp;puc=aoljjc&amp;tkr=SVU">Cramer's Take</a>). (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/supervalu-incorporated/svu/nys">SVU</a>) are trading significantly lower today following this morning's <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/supervalu-3q-profit-rises-25-percent/n20080108072809990017">third-quarter earnings</a> release. The company posted a pretty strong quarter, but lowered its full-year outlook.<br /><br />The company reported growth of 25% for its quarterly profit, which rose up to $141 million, or 66 cents per share, following weaker <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUKN0846258120080108?rpc=44">employee-related costs</a>, depreciation expense, litigation charges and one-time acquisition costs. Analysts had expected the grocery store chain show earnings of 63 cents per share. For the same period last year, Supervalu had posted a profit of $113 million, or 54 cents per share. <br /><br />Even with the higher profits, if you take a look at revenues, you see a decline of 4.2% in the quarter, which had one less week than the year-earlier period, and cut about $500 million from revenue. The company posted sales of $10.21 billion, beating analysts' expectations for sales of $10.17 billion.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/01/08/supervalu-svu-third-quarter-profit-climbs-but-lowers-outlook/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Supervalu (SVU) third-quarter profit climbs, but lowers outlook</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/01/08/supervalu-svu-third-quarter-profit-climbs-but-lowers-outlook/">Supervalu (SVU) third-quarter profit climbs, but lowers outlook</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 08 Jan 2008 15:13:00 EST.
