The most prominent earnings reports on tap are Wednesday's results from Bed Bath &amp; Beyond (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bed-bath-and-beyond-inc/bbby/nas" class="inlinked">BBBY</a>) and from Monsanto (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/monsanto-company/mon/nys" class="inlinked">MON</a>). Here's what analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect to see.</p>
<p><strong>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</strong></p>
<p>During its fiscal fourth quarter, the nation's largest domestics retailer <a href="https://secure.forumcomm.com/?publisher_ID=36&amp;article_id=188401&amp;CFID=167875164&amp;CFTOKEN=30400662">opened new stores</a> and its CEO <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/insider-trades/11/01/813530/bed-bath-beyond-ceo-sells-23-778-shares-of-bbby">sold shares</a>. Analysts anticipate that the New Jersey-based company will report per-share earnings of 97 cents, an increase of 11.3% from the same quarter of last year. The company also is expected to post revenue of $2.4 billion for the three months that ended in February, a 6.3% rise from a year earlier.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/04/03/week-in-preview-bed-bath-and-beyond-monsanto-pier-1-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, Monsanto and Pier 1 Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/04/03/week-in-preview-bed-bath-and-beyond-monsanto-pier-1-earnings/">Week in Preview: Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, Monsanto and Pier 1 Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 03 Apr 2011 12:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys" class="inlinked">TGT</a>) is one of the top ten largest retailers in the U.S. by sales, competing mainly with Walmart (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys" class="inlinked">WMT</a>), Best Buy (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/best-buy-incorporated/bby/nys" class="inlinked">BBY</a>), Macy's (M), Sears (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sears-holdings-corporation/shld/nas" class="inlinked">SHLD</a>) and Costco (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/costco-wholesale-corporation/cost/nas" class="inlinked">COST</a>). The recent economic environment has revealed that the firm is highly exposed to U.S. macro-economic trends that impact retail spending, such as high rising energy prices, lower <a href="http://realestate.aol.com/home-values" class="inlinked">home values</a> and downturns in the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/economy/" class="inlinked">economy</a>. Although Target positions itself as a "cheap chic" retailer, consumers are still cutting back on goods such as apparel and electronics, both of which play an important role in Target's total sales.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/18/positive-outlook-for-targets-u-s-store-revenues/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Positive Outlook for Target's U.S. Store Revenues</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/18/positive-outlook-for-targets-u-s-store-revenues/">Positive Outlook for Target's U.S. Store Revenues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 12:00:00 EST. Take a look at the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/target-corporation/tgt/nys/tech-chart">twelve-month chart</a>. Find where the shares were on Jan. 3. Got it? Now, do you see what happened since then? I don't think you can miss such a big drop.</p>
<p>The 52-week low for the retailer is $48.23; the 52-week high is $60.97. The equity finished down 0.7% to $51.30 on Monday. Volume, thankfully, was below average. That lack of conviction could be a saving grace.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/08/targets-pullback-trading-opportunity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Target's Pullback: View It as a Trading Opportunity?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/08/targets-pullback-trading-opportunity/">Target's Pullback: View It as a Trading Opportunity?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 10:00:00 EST. That was at $29.50. Know what the stock closed at yesterday? Its final price was $41.33. And that's rather close to the 52-week high of $42.27.<br />
<br />
To fully appreciate how dramatic the rise in the stock has been requires a look at the one-year <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/big-lots-inc/big/nys/tech-chart">chart</a>. Impressive, isn't it? I guess I should have been a stronger believer in the retailer. Following last week's disappointing <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/retail-sales/19844535/">January retail sales numbers</a> from the Commerce Department but strong fourth-quarter reports from Abercrombie &amp; Fitch (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/abercrombie-and-fitch-co/anf/nys">ANF</a>) and Nordstrom (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nordstrom-inc/jwn/nys">JWN</a>), the coming week will offer plenty more data on the sector for investors to mull over.</p>
<p><strong>Walmart</strong></p>
<p>Bentonville-based Walmart (<a target="_blank" class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>) offered <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-offers-free-shipping-to-home-this-holiday-season-with-no-minimum-purchase-requirement-online-at-walmart-com/rfid385747683/?channel=pf">free holiday shipping</a>, closed its <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-announces-closure-of-moscow-office/rfid395482426/?channel=pf">Moscow office</a> and named a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-u-s-appoints-duncan-mac-naughton-to-chief-merchandising-officer/rfid409237909/?channel=pf">chief merchandising officer</a> during its fourth quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast earnings for that period to come to $1.31 per share, up from $1.17 in the same quarter of last year. The world's largest retailer also is expected to post revenues of $117.7 billion for the three months that ended in January. That's 3.5% more than a year earlier.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/20/week-in-preview-retail-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Walmart, Home Depot and More Retail Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/20/week-in-preview-retail-earnings/">Week in Preview: Walmart, Home Depot and More Retail Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 20 Feb 2011 12:30:00 EST. The dollar was up and both oil and gold were down. A lackluster jobless claims might have taken away some of the zing that the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/automatic-data-processing-inc/adp/nas" class="inlinked">ADP</a> and TrimTabs data showed for employment trends ahead of Friday's non-Farm Payrolls and unemployment rate due Friday morning. Still, many key names were on the move today. <br />

(TGT)</a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/cost/" rel="tag">Costco Wholesale (COST)</a></p><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" alt="holdiay shopping" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.dailyfinance.com/media/2010/10/retail240.jpg" />December is not shaping up to have been the retail windfall that many experts predicted, which may be setting up a rather scary situation. Don't worry folks, the experts are going to blame the <a href="http://www.aolnews.com/story/retailers-report-surprisingly-weak/616715/" target="_blank">poor December revenue</a> on different factors, including strong November sales taking away from December and post-Christmas sales suffering from the Northeast blizzard. <br />
<br />
First things first, not all retailers have reported their results -- a majority of heavy hitters will report today. Nevertheless, the results are being described as "slow and steady" rather than the expected blowout holiday shopping season. For example, Costco (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/costco-wholesale-corporation/cost/nas" target="_blank">COST</a>) reported sales that increased 6%. This is positive data, unfortunately expectations called for an increase of 6.2%. Target (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys" target="_blank">TGT</a>) saw sales increase 0.9%, well short of the expected 4%. Of course sales were better at Macy's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys" target="_blank">M</a>), right? I mean they are adding jobs and all. Wrong, sales did increase (3.9%) but missed expectations (4.5%).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/06/holiday-sales-fall-short-of-expectations/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Holiday Sales Falling Short of Expectations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/06/holiday-sales-fall-short-of-expectations/">Holiday Sales Falling Short of Expectations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. The stock closed down 5% to $29.50. Volume was above the norm.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/briefing/big-sees-q4-eps-in-line-with-consensus/rfid392759484/?channel=pf">Briefing.com</a>, the company made 23 cents per share in the third quarter. Kmart, the discounter, joined with Sears, the department store retailer in 2005.<br />
Both lines are in stiff competition with other brands, the <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/money/companies/earnings/2010-11-18-sears-holdings_N.htm"><em>USA Today</em></a> reports. Kmart's competing with Walmart (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>) and Target (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys">TGT</a>), while Sears's competitors include Home Depot (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-home-depot-inc/hd/nys">HD</a>) and Lowe's (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/lowe-s-companies-inc/low/nys">LOW</a>).</p>
<p>The Kmart-Sears combo has been lagging in the retail sector. On Thursday, Sears Holdings (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sears-holdings-corporation/shld/nas">SHLD</a>) posted a loss of $218 million or $1.98 per share, compared with a loss of $127 million or $1.09 per share in the period last year. Revenue fell 5% to $9.68 billion. Analysts had expected $9.89 billion.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/19/sears-a-retail-sector-laggard/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sears: A Retail Sector Laggard</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/19/sears-a-retail-sector-laggard/">Sears: A Retail Sector Laggard</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 10:40:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gamestop-corp-new/gme/nys">GME</a>) is down about 3.8% at the time of this writing. That places the quote at $20.20. Volume is pretty heavy. Looks like the market isn't exactly sure what to do with this company as the shares are at a comfortable distance between the two extremes.</p>
<p>Earlier today, the video-game chain reported earnings for the third quarter. At the time of this writing, shares of the company were up 4% to $55.68. Volume was high.<br />
<br />
The stock is not too far from the 52-week high of $58.52. The one-year <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/target-corporation/tgt/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> shows some sideways action over the last several months. Overall, given the kind of business Target is in, I think one can say that the equity has been holding up fairly well in this tough market.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/17/target-up-on-q3-release/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Target Up on Q3 Release</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/17/target-up-on-q3-release/">Target Up on Q3 Release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. Many more quarterly reports from retailers are due this week, and by and large expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are high.</p>
<p>Walmart (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">WMT</a>), the king of retailers, is expected to buck the trend, though. Analysts anticipate that the Bentonville-based company will report that its third-quarter earnings grew only 6.7% year-over-year to 90 cents per share. During the three months that ended in October, Walmart announced an <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-announces-intent-to-acquire-south-africa-based-massmart/rfid371091986/?channel=pf" target="_blank">acquisition in South Africa</a> and kicked-off the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walmart-announces-early-savings-on-toys-to-kick-off-holiday-shopping-season/rfid375966082/?channel=pf" target="_blank">holiday shopping season</a>, and revenue for that period is predicted to have risen 3.0% to $102.4 billion. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, analysts so far expect sequential and <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Year%20Over%20Year%20-%20YOY" target="_blank">year-over-year</a> growth of both earnings and revenue. Walmart results have not fallen short of consensus estimates in the past five quarters.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/14/week-in-preview-retailers-offer-up-earnings-wmt-anf-low-tgt/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Retailers Offer Up Earnings (WMT, ANF, LOW, TGT)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/14/week-in-preview-retailers-offer-up-earnings-wmt-anf-low-tgt/">Week in Preview: Retailers Offer Up Earnings (WMT, ANF, LOW, TGT)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 14 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. The price war centers on toys because "parents will buy stuff for their kids even when the economy is awful."</p>
<p>The article adds that shoppers have attempted to buy the "biggest toy bargains" while "ignor[ing] stores' other offerings." However, the article is quick to point out improving economic conditions suggest that retailers have a reason to believe the shoppers will look around the store a bit more and be quicker to part with some cash. Is this a safe assumption? Yes, I think that it is. However, I have a couple of reservations.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/09/is-holiday-shopping-changing-walmart-and-target-think-so/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Holiday Shopping Changing?
