Earlier today, the maker of solar photovoltaic items reported results for the third quarter. According to Reuters, sales went up over 100% to $508 million. Net income of $1.08 per ADS beat the consensus estimate by 21 pennies. The gross margin experienced an improvement on a year-over-year basis. Seems like a data set that should be bought, right?

Second Oil Rig Accident Signals a Fundamental Economic Shift?

By now, nearly every person in this country has heard or read about a second oil rig accident which has happened near Morgan City, Louisiana. Although it appears that only a small amount of environmental damage was done, how will the reaction to this news play out in the markets through the coming week?

I'm very thankful that this most recent oil rig accident happened late on a Friday. I certainly believe that if this accident had happened a few hours earlier in the day, I probably wouldn't have liked to witness the way the markets reacted. Now, we have two days to absorb the news of what has happened before full-scale trading resumes. Really, I'm very happy about that.

Five Reasons to Buy Trina Solar

Trinasolar TSL logoTrina Solar (TSL) has had a rough couple of years. After a $10 IPO in 2006, it flew up to peak at $35 in 2007 only to bottom out under $4 at the end of 2008. It was partially the broader market that held back Trina, but also speculation over the viability of solar power as oil prices softened.

Trina Solar nearly became a bear market statistic. But the company has fought back from less than $3 a share to its current $25 price, and there are a lot of reasons to think that Trina Solar is making a comeback. In fact, it's one of my favorite small-cap stocks to buy this earnings season -- and here are five reasons why:

Analyst upgrades:

  • Jefferies upgraded Warner Chilcott (NASDAQ: WCRX) to Buy from Hold. The firm views Warner Chilcott's acquisition of P&G's (NYSE: PG) pharma business as a positive given its attractive product fit and purchase price.
  • ThinkEquity upgraded Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) to Buy from Source of Funds and raised its target to $550 from $400. Previously, the firm thought Google Street estimates were too high and that low single-digit growth in Q2 and Q3 would cause multiple contraction. They said their thesis played out fundamentally but they were wrong on the stock. Given Q2 has past, the analyst raised estimates above consensus and expects an in-line Q3 and for shares to outperform as the economic cycle turns.
  • Bernstein upgraded Diageo (NYSE: DEO) to Outperform from Market Perform and views Diageo's valuation as attractive. The firm expects 2H09 results on August 27 to mark a bottom in weakening top-line trends.

  • Lowe's (NYSE: LOW) was upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley.

A look at Trina Solar ahead of its earnings report

Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) is set to step into the earnings spotlight today, with Wall Street expecting a fourth-quarter loss of 4 cents per share. This past year hasn't been kind to TSL as far as earnings are concerned. In two of the three earnings reports thus far, TSL has missed the consensus estimate -- both times by a rather wide margin.

There is no doubt that solar firms have lost a bit of their sizzle, what with dropping crude prices and tightening pursestrings. Unfortunately for TSL, it has been caught up in the wave of downside pressure. Even if the firm bucks the recent trend and reports better-than-expected earnings, it may not rally much, thanks to a massive amount of overhead pressure. TSL's 10- and 20-week moving averages are in position to stop any rally attempt, a role that they have filled since the middle of 2008.
