Apple's Move to Absorb Higher Component Costs Will Help iPad 2

iPad 2The recent Japanese earthquake led to supply constraints and consequently higher prices for many of Apple's component suppliers. However, Apple has agreed to absorb the additional costs related to components in exchange for smooth shipments. Although Apple's profitability could be slightly impacted due to higher costs, we believe it's still a market share game for Apple's hit products like the new iPad 2 and so ensuring on time deliveries will put more pressure on the likes of Motorola Mobility and Research in Motion that are trying to work their way into the tablet market. We maintain $420 price estimate for Apple stock, which is about 20% above market price.

Interpublic Discloses Its Stake in Facebook

The players in Facebook are elusive. Since it is a private company, it is not required to disclose its partners. Once and a while we learn about an individual or company that has a piece of the company.

Not only is it difficult to find out who owns a stake in Facebook, it is equally difficult to ascertain the value of the company. The numbers keep going up and up. For example, Microsoft (MSFT) invested $240 million when the company was valued at $15 billion.

Interpublic (INPGP), the advertising conglomerate, bought 1/2% of Facebook for $5 million, in 2006. As the value of the company went up, so did Interpublic's investment. When the Facebook investment appreciated, Interpublic was forced to disclose the information to the SEC, as reported in the Financial Times.

The need to handle the mobile explosion is putting extreme pressure on present tower operators to upgrade their equipment or build new towers. This is a cumbersome, time consuming process.

MySpace Cuts Workforce by 47%

In the beginning, the auto industry had a wide array of manufacturers. As the industry grew, new companies formed but most went by the wayside. The same phenomenon is taking place in the Internet. As new companies are formed, older ones fade away.

Such is the story of MySpace, as the Wall Street Journal reports. Founded in 2003, it had a large following of musicians and was the leader in the new concept of social networking.
