First discussed here on May 11, 2009, at a price of $12.35, Tyson has moved north this winter, but with volatility, to about $19, and I still like the shares here. </p>
<p>In 2011, Tyson's revenue should increase about 3-4%, as food demand rises in-sync with the U.S. and global economic expansions. Chicken and beef margins should widen. Modest pricing power also will continue. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/28/tyson-foods-roller-coasters-north/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson Foods Roller-Coasters North</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/28/tyson-foods-roller-coasters-north/">Tyson Foods Roller-Coasters North</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 16:40:00 EST. <p>The shares of Tyson downtrended <a href="http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details?Symbol=tsn&amp;Refer=http://clearstation.etrade.com/cgi-bin/details%3fSymbol%3dmbi">in bear-hug fashion</a> for much of 2010, walking down to about $15 from $20. <p>Tyson is also expected to post revenue of $7.8 billion for the three months that ended in September, which is 7.4% more than in the same period of fiscal 2009. And the consensus estimate for the full year calls for earnings of $2.08 per share (+87.0%) and revenue of $28.7 billion (+7.3%). With less than three hours to go before the market closes its doors, shares of the company were up by 4.5%. The quote was $45.12.<br />
<br />
That's pretty interesting considering that the shares were initially weak today after the third-quarter report. As this article over at <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/story/10841953/1/summer-heat-wilts-sanderson-farms-profit.html?cm_ven=GOOGLEFI">TheStreet.com</a> indicates, per-share profit came in well below Wall Street's expectations. The business generated $1.55 per share, a number that was a little over thirty cents light.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/23/sanderson-farms-trading-up-on-q3-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sanderson Farms Trading Up on Q3 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/23/sanderson-farms-trading-up-on-q3-news/">Sanderson Farms Trading Up on Q3 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 15:20:00 EST. (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/tyson-foods-inc/tsn/nys">TSN</a>) by placing the stock on its Conviction Sell List, but I think this meat producer may have gotten a raw deal.</p>
<p>Monday morning, Tyson Foods reported its results for the fiscal third quarter of $242 million, or 65 cents per share, up approximately 86% from the same period last year. The company reported strong sales of $7.44 billion and said it expects demand to increase further next year.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/11/tyson-foods-gets-raw-deal-from-analysts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson Foods Gets Raw Deal from Analysts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/11/tyson-foods-gets-raw-deal-from-analysts/">Tyson Foods Gets Raw Deal from Analysts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 18:20:00 EST. When I <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/10/tyson-foods-drops-on-q2-data/">last wrote</a> about the company back in May, I found that its shares were under pressure after a quarterly report was issued. Today, the same thing has occurred: investors were getting rid of the stock upon a fresh round of earnings data. My condolences to those who own this name in their portfolio. <br />
<br />
The results weren't as bad as the selling would make it seem. For the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/company-news/tyson-foods-reports-quarterly-earnings-of-65-cents-per-share/19585986/">fiscal third quarter</a>, the business made 65 cents per share versus 35 cents per share in the year-ago period. According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6781SA20100809">Reuters</a>, adjusted profit of 67 cents per share beat projections by nine pennies. The actual <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/tyson-reports-third-quarter-and-nine-months-results/rfid356067367/?channel=pf">press release</a> shows an expansion in operating cash flow: $1.1 billion was booked this time around over the last three quarters; $684 million was recorded in the comparable frame.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/09/tyson-foods-sold-on-q3-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson Foods Stock Sells on Q3 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/09/tyson-foods-sold-on-q3-news/">Tyson Foods Stock Sells on Q3 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 09 Aug 2010 17:00:00 EST. The market is really doing well right now, but I guess the traders weren't too bullish on the company's second-quarter report.<br />

Let's get some perspective on how the stock has been doing over a longer period. For that, we can check out the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/tyson-foods-inc/tsn/nys/tech-chart">twelve-month chart</a>. After some sideways action, the shares broke out and started to trend in the upward direction. The 52-week low is $10.76 and the 52-week high is $20.57.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/10/tyson-foods-drops-on-q2-data/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson Foods Drops on Q2 Data</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/10/tyson-foods-drops-on-q2-data/">Tyson Foods Drops on Q2 Data</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 10 May 2010 14:30:00 EST. And analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters don't seem to be expecting too many turkeys among this week's bunch.</p>
<p>Leading U.S. meat processor <strong>Tyson Foods Inc.</strong> (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/tyson-foods-inc/tsn/nys">TSN</a>), which has just named a <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/_aol/story/10629015/1/tyson-names-new-president-coo.html">new chief executive officer</a> and a new chief operating officer, is expected to report fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $0.26 per share, up from $0.14 in the same period of last year. But revenue is expected to total $6.9 billion, or 4.3% less than a year ago. The full-year forecast is for a profit of $0.25 per share (-16.7) on $26.4 billion (-3.9%) in sales. This dividend payer has offered upside surprises in the past two quarters, topping estimates by 11 cents per share in the third quarter.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/22/the-week-in-preview-no-turkey-earnings-from-tyson-hormel-crac/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: No turkey earnings from Tyson, Hormel, Cracker Barrel ...</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/22/the-week-in-preview-no-turkey-earnings-from-tyson-hormel-crac/">The week in preview: No turkey earnings from Tyson, Hormel, Cracker Barrel ...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 22 Nov 2009 12:30:00 EST. The brokerage gave <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/tyson-foods-downgraded-to-neutral-at-jp-morgan-2009-11-11-73950">four reasons</a> for the downgrade: valuation, recent rises in corn and hog prices, a looming supply increase from competitor Sanderson Farms (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sanderson-farms-inc/safm/nas">SAFM</a>), and uncertainty from Pilgrim's Pride. <br /><br />All of these reasons are perfectly valid for the downgrade, but I want to focus on the valuation aspect of the downgrade. Technically, TSN faces overhead resistance in the $14 region, which is significant as the shares are currently ascending through the upper $12 region. The $14 level spurned the shares earlier this year, sending them into a steady decline back to support at the $11 region.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/11/tyson-foods-downgraded-by-j-p-morgan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson Foods downgraded by JPMorgan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/11/tyson-foods-downgraded-by-j-p-morgan/">Tyson Foods downgraded by JPMorgan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST. While Canadian banks on the whole held up better than their U.S. counterparts during the financial crisis, these five are expected to report that their earnings are still declining in the most recent quarter.</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for EPS for these banks to have fallen from 15% to 25% from a year ago. Their long-term EPS growth forecast is for between 10% and 12%, which is in the same range as U.S. rivals <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">Wells Fargo &amp; Co.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">WFC</a>), but better than <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">Bank of America Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">Citigroup Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>). Earnings multiples for these Canadian banks are 10x to 12x, but none of them have a First Call consensus recommendation is to buy. The Motley Fool, though, considers TD as <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/value/2009/08/17/5-top-rated-value-stocks.aspx">a value stock</a> and RY a stock <a href="http://www.fool.com/investing/dividends-income/2009/07/28/4-star-stocks-poised-to-pop-rbc.aspx">poised to pop</a>. All of them are trading much closer to their 52-week highs than lows, and shares of all are up more than 100% since March lows.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/23/the-week-in-preview-canadian-banks-in-the-earnings-spotlight/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Canadian banks in the earnings spotlight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/23/the-week-in-preview-canadian-banks-in-the-earnings-spotlight/">The week in preview: Canadian banks in the earnings spotlight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 23 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST. Last year at this time, Tyson earned 3 cents per share. This year, the food company, famous for its chicken brand, made 35 cents per share. Sales actually dipped a little under 3%, but management is diligently fighting the good fight when it comes to efficiencies. Both costs of sales and selling, general and administrative expenses went down. </p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&amp;sid=aPUxqqmIkPLc">Bloomberg</a>, the adjusted income of 33 cents per share simply blazed past Wall Street's expectations. The call was for 22 cents per share. You've got to like that. Higher prices for poultry helped the quarter. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/04/tyson-foods-beats-analyst-expectations-by-wide-margin/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson Foods beats analyst expectations by wide margin </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/04/tyson-foods-beats-analyst-expectations-by-wide-margin/">Tyson Foods beats analyst expectations by wide margin </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 08:00:00 EST. The company's second-quarter earnings release is driving the buying. According to this <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idAFN0437134020090504?rpc=33&amp;sp=true">article</a>, Tyson reported an adjusted loss of $0.05 per share. The market was expecting a loss of $0.06 per share. So I guess the market was pretty happy about that.
<p>Wall Street was probably encouraged by something else as well. If you take a look at the actual <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/tyson-reports-second-quarter-and-six/rfid210143801">release</a>, head on down to the statement of <a href="http://finance.aol.com/glossary/cash%20flow">cash flows</a>. Last year at this time, Tyson generated $144 million in cash from operations during the six-month period. This year, the company made $407 million from operations. Some nice changes in <a href="http://finance.aol.com/glossary/working%20capital">working capital</a> helped out. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/05/04/tyson-beats-estimates-stock-rallies-can-you-buy-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson beats estimates, stock rallies -- can you buy now?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/05/04/tyson-beats-estimates-stock-rallies-can-you-buy-now/">Tyson beats estimates, stock rallies -- can you buy now?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 04 May 2009 15:30:00 EST. Sales rose almost 10% to $7.2 billion. And net income on an adjusted basis came in at $0.15 per share. That represented pretty good growth over last year's profit figure. But you know, it didn't really matter for two reasons. One, the call by the analyst community was for four more pennies. Two, guidance was not tasty at all. Management sees further pressures coming, and the aforementioned source mentions that the fulfillment of debt obligations is an issue. </p>
<p>A tough environment for chicken has been plaguing Tyson. Not only that, but a look at the company's <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/tyson-reports-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal/rfid156813125">press release</a> shows that operational cash flow took a huge dive over the last twelve months, dropping roughly 58% to $288 million. There was no free cash for the year to support the dividend obligations. That isn't too encouraging. </p>
<p>The bottom line on Tyson, which competes with the also-struggling <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/pilgrim-s-pride-corporation/ppc/nys">Pilgrim's Pride</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/pilgrim-s-pride-corporation/ppc/nys">PPC</a>), is that it isn't a buy, at least not from where I sit. I know there will be investors out there who will see some value in the situation, but I cannot, at least not at this time. No, I'm not saying that I think Tyson will disappear. However, there are better ideas out there if you're looking to play the supermarket game over a long-term basis. There's <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-procter-and-gamble-company/pg/nys">Procter &amp; Gamble</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-procter-and-gamble-company/pg/nys">PG</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc/kft/nys">Kraft</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kraft-foods-inc/kft/nys">KFT</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/campbell-soup-company/cpb/nys">Campbell Soup</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/campbell-soup-company/cpb/nys">CPB</a>), to name some examples. As I write this, Tyson's stock is down over 11%. Might we see a bounce in the next few days? Sure. But I'm not brave enough to step in with this one. </p>

<p>Like most big companies located in small towns, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/tyson-foods-inc/tsn/nys">Tyson Foods</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/tyson-foods-inc/tsn/nys">TSN</a>) has a delightfully quirky origin. John Tyson, owner of a battered truck and 500 chickens, opportunist, and debtor in the Depression-era 1930s struck an idea that probably seemed like folly to his neighbors: he'd deliver chickens to Chicago and Kansas City, where they'd get more money.</p>
<p>I'm sure for every story like Tyson's, there were 100 that didn't turn out so auspiciously. But in this tale, the hero comes back to his little Arkansas hometown with a profit and pays off his debts. He keeps on raising and selling birds in points north, eventually devising a plan to keep more of the profits by "vertically integrating" (I'll bet dollars-to-doughnuts he didn't call it that) and incubating his own chicks instead of buying them from a hatchery, as well as milling his own feed instead of buying it from a feed store.<br /></p>
<p>This wasn't the end of Tyson's forethought. He bought a broiler farm in Springdale, Arkansas (beginning the company's history in that town) and started to cross-breed birds designed for meat production, instead of using heritage (or "pedigree") breeds.<em></em></p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/06/26/big-company-small-town-tyson-foods-springdale-arkansas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Big company, small town: Tyson Foods, Springdale, Arkansas</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/06/26/big-company-small-town-tyson-foods-springdale-arkansas/">Big company, small town: Tyson Foods, Springdale, Arkansas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 17:10:00 EST.
