Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters foresee strong reports from such big names as Apple (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas" class="inlinked">AAPL</a>), eBay (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas" class="inlinked">EBAY</a>), IBM (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/international-business-machines-corporation/ibm/nys">IBM</a>), General Electric (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys" class="inlinked">GE</a>), Google (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>), Schlumberger (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/schlumberger-ltd-netherlands-antilles/slb/nys" class="inlinked">SLB</a>) and Southwest Airlines (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/southwest-airlines-co/luv/nys" class="inlinked">LUV</a>). And fast on the heels of last week's <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/jpmorgan-earnings-the-return-of-big-bank-profits/19801174/">big earnings beat</a> from JPMorgan Chase (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys" class="inlinked">JPM</a>), there will be plenty more results from the financial sector to peruse this week.</p>
<p>Among the financials expected to post double-digit earnings growth this week are Capital One Financial (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/capital-one-financial-corporation/cof/nys" class="inlinked">COF</a>), Morgan Stanley (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/morgan-stanley/ms/nys" class="inlinked">MS</a>), SLM Corp. UBS upgraded the stock from a Neutral to a Buy yesterday, and FBR Capital jumped on the band wagon today with an upgrade from a Market Perform to Outperform.<br />
<br />
The only difference in the outlooks for U.S. Bank from these two firms is UBS sees the stock rising to $29, while FBR Capital sees it rising to only $28 -- the high level U.S. Bank saw in mid-April before turning around and falling with the rest of the market.<br />
<br />
I, too, like U.S. Bank's prospects in the future. As Congress continues to take teeth out of the financial reform legislation to try and find a way to get 60 votes in the Senate, future prospects for the financial industry continue to look better and better. And since the prospect of a heavier regulatory hand is already priced into these financial stocks, U.S. Bank looks like it could rebound quite nicely as traders adjust positively to watered-down reforms.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/30/firms-lining-up-to-upgrade-u-s-bank/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Firms Lining Up to Upgrade U.S. Bank</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/30/firms-lining-up-to-upgrade-u-s-bank/">Firms Lining Up to Upgrade U.S. Bank</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 30 Jun 2010 15:30:00 EST. I thought it may be good to take a look at some earnings results from a few of the banks, and what it could mean for the economy going forward. <br />
<br />
First, let's look at the earnings:<br />
<ul>
    <li>JPMorgan Chase (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys" target="_blank">JPM</a>): earnings of 74 cents per share; expectations for 60 cents per share</li>
    <li>Citigroup (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys" target="_blank">C</a>): a loss of six cents per share; expectations for a loss of 33 cents per share</li>
    <li>Goldman Sachs (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys" target="_blank">GS</a>): earnings of $8.20 per share; expectations for earnings of $5.20</li>

Yesterday was also the day I called the bottom of our economic woes (see <a title="View Will Bush throw a change-up at Yankee Stadium? on BloggingStocks" href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/15/will-bush-throw-a-change-up-at-yankee-stadium/" target="_blank">Will Bush throw a change-up at Yankee Stadium?</a>).<br /><br />Calling the bottom should not be confused with the end of the pain. It could get worse but I see signs of the turn, and today the market, for the moment, is up. Oil prices are down, as I write, to $132 per barrel and I do not think we will be seeing $200 oil any time soon, as some have opined.<br /><br />Today's <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">Wells Fargo</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys">WFC</a>) earnings report set things off in the right direction. <a title="View Wells Fargo (WFC): Beating expectations on BloggingStocks" href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/16/wells-fargo-wfc-beating-expectations/" target="_blank">Wells Fargo: Beating expectations</a> by my colleague Steven Halpern will give you the details, but the highlights are lower earnings, a 10% increase in the dividend yield, and a tolerable and understandable charge for bad loans and to increase reserves.
<p>If Bush's change-up marks the bottom, then WFC is the slugger that hit the ball back over the fence. Can one report from one bank make a difference? Yes it can, if people read it as a sign of things to come. At the same time, the capitulation I describe in <a title="View IndyMac (IMB) turns to dust on BloggingStocks" href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/16/indymac-imb-turns-to-dust/" target="_blank">IndyMac (IMB) turns to dust</a> is another sign that we may be at the turning point.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/16/did-wells-fargo-earnings-report-signal-a-turnaround/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Did Wells Fargo's earnings report signal a turnaround?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/16/did-wells-fargo-earnings-report-signal-a-turnaround/">Did Wells Fargo's earnings report signal a turnaround?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 13:23:00 EST. <p><em><br /></em><a href="http://www.thomsoninvestortools.com/component/firm/aol/view.asp?country=US&amp;tier=default&amp;symbol=USB&amp;uid=stocks/earnings">Thomson Financial</a> expects <strong><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/us-bancorp-del/usb/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">U.S. Bancorp</a></strong> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/us-bancorp-del/usb/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">USB</a>) to earn $0.59 when it announces its fourth-quarter earnings on January 15th. That's 11% below the same period in 2006, when it earned $0.66.</p>
<p>U.S. Bancorp is a Minneapolis, MN-based bank operating in four lines of business: Wholesale Banking, Payment Services, Wealth Management and Consumer Banking. In the last year its revenues were $13 billion and its net income totaled $4.5 billion. Its stock has lost 15.8% of its value in the last year and it trades at a P/E of 11.7. </p>
<p>It has a mixed track record of delivering actual earnings vs expected ones. In the second quarter of 2007, it fell 3% below expectations and in the third quarter it beat by 1.5%. My hunch is that it will miss by a little.</p>

The <em>Wall Street Journal</em> reports today that the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119517672045495137.html?mod=hps_us_whats_news">number of money market funds admitting to trouble is increasing</a> {subscription required]. Today's story focuses on FAF Advisors, a unit of <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/us-bancorp-del/usb/nys?from=lookup">U.S. Bancorp</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/us-bancorp-del/usb/nys?from=lookup">USB)</a> , which operates the First American Prime Obligations Fund. This fund posted a notice on its website that alerts its investors to the fact that the fund "entered into an agreement that provides that if a loss is realized on the notes issued by Cheyne Finance LLC, an affiliate of FAF Advisors will contribute capital to the fund, up to the amount of the loss, in an amount necessary to preserve the fund's price at $1.00 per share and to preserve the fund's AAA rating."</p>
<p>Cheyne Finance LLC is an SIV that went into receivership, so that's the one most are focusing on publicly, but as I've discussed before many money market funds hold assets from other SIVs in trouble. Five other fund groups that have moved to protect their funds or developed a plan under agreement with the SEC include <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">Bank of America's</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>) Columbia Management Group, Credit Suisse Asset Management,. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">Wachovia's</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wachovia-corporation/wb/nys?tabs=quotesandnews">WB</a>) Evergreen Investments, SEI Investments Co. and STI Classic Funds. Other funds that held Cheyne-related assets in recent SEC filings include Valic II Company fund, offered by a unit of American International Group, and RiverSource Cash Management fund.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/11/16/more-money-market-funds-seek-protection/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>More money market funds seek protection</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/11/16/more-money-market-funds-seek-protection/">More money market funds seek protection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 16 Nov 2007 11:20:00 EST.
