UnitedHealth Group Trading Lower After Earnings

UnitedHealth Group's (UNH) stock is a little sick today. The shares are exchanging hands at a quote of $40.07 as of this writing, a price that represents a drop in value of 1.2%. Volume is active.

If you look at the latest earnings report, however, you can't help but shake your head in wonderment. The Associated Press says that adjusted Q4 net income of $1.05 per share beat the overall projection of 84 cents per share. Quite a difference. Furthermore, the company is sticking to its outlook for 2011.

Election Day Trades (MRK, PFE, WLP)

Today is election day. Currently, intrade.com is projecting a 97% chance that the Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives and a 48% chance that they will win the Senate. What could a landslide win for the Republican Party mean for the stock market?

Some observers are suggesting that gridlock in Washington, along with a more business friendly atmosphere, could be a catalyst for stock prices to rise. This, however, is offset by concerns about cuts in government spending. The private economy is sputtering, and near-term spending cuts could have a detrimental effect on the recovery. Therefore, instead of focusing on the broader market, investors may want to look at some specific sectors that may benefit from a Republican victory.

Three interesting areas are oil services, financials, and healthcare. The thinking is that some of the regulatory headwinds facing these sectors may be lifted if the political atmosphere in Washington D.C. changes. Some observers believe that a Republican-led House of Representatives will be able to chip away at some of the Obamacare legislation. This should benefit large pharmaceutical companies such as Merck (MRK) and Pfizer (PFE).

Before the Bell: Futures Advance on Strong Earnings

U.S. stock futures advanced Tuesday morning after generally strong earning results, especially from the big blue chip companies. Without much in the way of economic news Tuesday, it's all about earnings, and there is no shortage of those. From IBM late Monday to Goldman Sachs this morning, quarterly financial results demonstrated a recovery in process. Coca-Cola, UnitedHealth and Johnson & Johnson all improved. Strong results from Apple are also expected later this afternoon.

With the exception of the Nasdaq composite, which ended relatively flat, stocks ended mostly higher Monday after a choppy trading day. While Wall Street was still reeling from the fraud allegations against Goldman Sachs (GS), Citigroup (C), one of the hardest hit banks during the financial crisis, reported strong results, offsetting some of the concerns.

What Is Warren Buffett Telling You?

Warren BuffetAs always, there is a volume of speculation after the much anticipated release of the quarterly changes in holdings report from Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A). While leaving all the deep analytical number crunching for greater minds than my own, I'd like to take a look at what Warren Buffett could be telling us through his company's latest form 13F.

Why has Warren Buffett swallowed Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNI) while letting go of Norfolk Southern (NSC) and Union Pacific (UNP)? Being the master of due diligence, Mr. Buffett has most likely determined that BNI is the most attractive of the three. The future of rail transport is all but guaranteed to shine, and I believe that Mr. Buffett has exited the other two rail companies simply to avoid conflict of interest issues.

Serious Money: Cheapest Stocks List Shrinks from 26 to 21

While most investors are fretting the markets recent contraction, you can be quite confident that "my pal Warren" has a smile on his face, as does Peter Lynch, Ken Heebner, Bill Miller, Bruce Berkowitz, and any number of fellow value investors that know now may be a time of opportunity. That is because they have the experience and understanding to pounce when they have a chance to buy things cheap.

This is the fourth installment of my series to discover just that: cheap stocks. If you would like to get on board from the beginning then review the initial post which screened for stocks with lower than market average P/E ratios, see Serious Money: Market Looks Cheap to Me -- 35 Stocks. In the second installment, I looked at yield and PEG ratios: Serious Money: Still Cheap Market -- 35 Stocks + Yields & Growth. Then I moved on to the the P/S and P/CF metrics in Serious Money: Cheapest Stocks Yet -- From 35 to 26, cutting nine stocks.

Before the Bell: Futures Lower After Jobs Report

U.S. stock market futures changed earlier direction and edged higher following several better-than-expected earning reports. Still, the market awaits a slew of economic reports, as well as results from Goldman Sachs. With concerns about China, futures move upward was muted.

Update 8:45 a.m.: After a disappointing jobs report that showed the number of newly-laid off workers seeking jobless benefits unexpectedly rose last week, stock futures fell, even as Goldman Sachs (GS) reported strong results.

On Wednesday, Wall Street markets sold off due to mounting concerns about China's efforts to tighten bank lending. As a global market driver and a major consumer of commodities, these moves could have international effects. Major indexes skidded over 1%.
