(X), whose colleagues include AK Steel (AKS) and Nucor Corp. (NUE), was sold off by investors on Tuesday after the company released its first-quarter results. The stock dropped $3.44, or 5.7%, to $56.63. Volume was strong.

The company is definitely far away from the 52-week low, but it unfortunately is also significantly under the 52-week high of $70.95. The one-year chart shows an up-and-down pattern that isn't necessarily for every investor. Indeed, the most recent price action has been decidedly in the downward direction. Of course, that might mean the business is worth a look, especially when you take into account the ultimate bias towards an upward trend. Let's check out the Q1 numbers.

Continue reading U.S. Steel: A Buy After Q1 Earnings?

U.S. Steel: A Buy After Q1 Earnings? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 28 Apr 2010 09:30:00 EST.
In his The Turnaround Letter, he explains, "But the news about steel is not all bad." Indeed, he believes some steel companies are poised for a turnaround. Here's his review of 6 leading steel production companies.

"Weakness in two big steel consuming industries, autos and construction, has been particularly troublesome for the steelmakers.

"However, there is evidence that steel inventories are gradually being worked off to low levels. There are also signs that economic activity in China, which is a huge consumer of steel, will not fall off as far as some economists initially feared.

Continue reading Steel: Six stocks with strong turnaround potential

Steel: Six stocks with strong turnaround potential originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 11:00:00 EST. Forecasts of $20.50 per share are above last month's $16.00. The most accurate projection is more bullish at $21.46 per share.

 Robust Growth with Record Numbers

The company recently announced second-quarter results and upped its dividend. Net income of $668 million soared past the previous year's $302 million. During the past 5 consecutive quarters, earnings per share were on average about 9% ahead of analyst expectations, with the most recent results coming in at an impressive 49.5% above expectations.

Commenting on results, U. S. Steel Chairman and CEO John P. Surma said, "We recorded the highest quarterly sales and net income in U. S. Steel's history during the second quarter as all three reportable segments posted record results, reflecting strong operating performance and favorable global pricing dynamics."

Higher Income

U.S. Steel declared a dividend of 30 cents per share, which is an increase of 5 cents per share. The company noted that the dividend is payable September 10, 2008, to stockholders of record at the close of business August 13, 2008. Read our July 17 analysis.
Growth & Income: United States Steel Corporation originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 17:33:00 EST. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on X.

After hitting a one-year low of $74.41 in August, the stock hit a one-year high of $185.55 last month. X opened this morning at $177.00. So far today the stock has hit a low of $175.25 and a high of $182.22. As of 12:55, X is trading at $183.10, up 9.88 (5.7%). A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 6.4% return in just seven weeks as long as X is above $140 at July expiration. US Steel would have to fall by more than 23% before we would start to lose money. This trade could be risky if the stock has risen too quickly and has a correction, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by the support the stock might find at $150, where it formed a bottom in May.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer.

DISCLOSURE: Mr. Archer owns and/or controls diversified portfolios of long and short stock and option positions that may include holdings in companies he writes about. Or is it bigger? Much bigger? That's what I am thinking about this Chinese earthquake.

Katrina distorted the U.S.'s growth pattern for more than a full year. The raw materials, the effort, the work, the reconstruction affected businesses from small-scale retail to refining and infrastructure.

We don't really know how China works, although a lot of people tell us they do. To me, the Chinese are always a day away from revolution or civil war and the trick of the government is to stay one step ahead of the posse. (Chinese hands will dispute that, but you have to appreciate that it takes a special skill to be wrong for more than a century and still maintain credibility.)

That means massive reconstruction: bricks, lumber, cement, steel and all the trimmings. Massive imports, not controlled by the Chinese and their little negotiation games like they play with iron and steel and coal. Just full-bore buying and something that could take growth for China back to the levels that everyone thought it couldn't absorb without more inflation.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: Earthquake recovery can change China

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Earthquake recovery can change China originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 14 May 2008 09:30:00 EST. And he has done it by taking advantage of the 30 bankruptcies in this sector, leaving him one of the few publicly traded companies left, including Nucor (NYSE: NUE) (Cramer's Take), which is a great company, AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) (Cramer's Take), which levitates all of the time on takeover talk and then DOESN'T come in, and Reliance (NYSE: RS) (Cramer's Take), which is another fave of mine.
Continue reading Cramer on BloggingStocks: The X factor

Cramer on BloggingStocks: The X factor originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 08:35:00 EST. This has investors worried that a consumer pullback could weaken the economy further, cutting demand for steel. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on X.

After hitting a one-year high of $127.26 in June, the stock hit a one-year low of $74.41 in August. This morning, X opened at $113.50. So far today the stock has hit a low of $108.76 and a high of $113.75. As of 11:20, X is trading at $109.21, down $5.79 (-5.0%). The chart for X looks neutral and improving, while S&P gives the stock a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider an April bear-call credit spread above the $140 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 4.2% return in two months as long as X is below $140 at April expiration. US Steel would have to rise by more than 27% before we would start to lose money.

X hasn't been above $130 at all in the past year and has shown resistance around $121 recently. This trade could be risky if the economy picks up and demand for steel rises, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by resistance X might find between $120 and $130, where the stock has topped out twice in the past year.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer. No one on Wall Street seemed to think much of the company's earnings.

Is it any wonder? The company reported third-quarter 2007 net income of $269 million, or $2.27 per diluted share, compared to second-quarter 2007 net income of $302 million, or $2.54 per diluted share, and third-quarter 2006 net income of $417 million, or $3.42 per diluted share. Total revenue rose slightly from $4.1 billion in the third quarter last year to $4.35 billion this year.

US Steel also said it expected poor results in the current quarter. Part of the issue driving down net income was the cost of an acquisition. The latest results included a charge of 23 cents a share for inventory acquired as part of the company's purchase in June of Lone Star Technologies Inc.

US Steel blamed imports from China for keeping its prices to customers low. Higher commodities prices also hurt the firm.

The problem for US Steel now is that China pressures and higher commodities prices are not likely to abate. That puts the company in a bind. Its shares trade in the middle of its 52-week range, changing hands today at a bit above $105. But if price and margin pressures stay as they are as 2008 begins, the stock could move back toward its recent lows around $80 reached just last August.
