In a note to investors, a Bernstein analyst wrote, "At the core of our concern for Verizon is the fact that after it begins to make distributions to Vodafone (VOD), we project that it will generate only just enough cash to cover its current dividend payment, leaving a razor-thin margin for error and sharply limited ability to commit to future dividend growth."

Dividend investors hate to hear that kind of worries regarding their distributions and have been driving VZ's price lower today in response. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on VZ.
Continue reading Verizon Drops on Dividend Concerns

Verizon Drops on Dividend Concerns originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 14:00:00 EST. But already investors are returning to short-sighted, self-destructive behavior by chasing fads and forgetting the facts.

Look at the Morgan Stanley U.S. REIT Index (RMZ), for example. It has been flying high even in the face of horrific commercial and residential real estate figures. Since February 9, RMZ is up about 25%. The index has skyrocketed over 150% from its March 2009 low -- about double the gains for the broader market.

Continue reading Why the Market Is Wrong on Verizon

Why the Market Is Wrong on Verizon originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 20 Apr 2010 12:00:00 EST. However, there was something else that was truly innovative: the app store. Basically, Apple allowed third-party developers to create applications for the iPhone, which certainly benefited customers. It has turned into a cash machine, as Apple gets a cut of all the downloads.

Wanting to capitalize on this -- as well as try to slow down Apple -- a group of mobile companies have formed an alliance, called the Wholesale Applications Community. It seems not. According to The Wall Street Journal one of the top candidates is the former CEO of cellular carrier Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), Arun Sarin.

While the search engines and portal companies are trying to move their products to wireless platforms. Sarin has no significant experience in the technology behind search, the content issues of building a portal like Yahoo!, or getting marketers to put more advertising on the company's sites.

If Sarin is the final choice, it will be an indication that no important media or internet executive was willing to take the job. There are already rumors that the COO of News Corp. (NYSE: NWS), Peter Chernin, turned down the chance to interview for the position.

One of the problems with getting a new chief is that no one know what will happen to Yahoo!'s search business. Will it be bought by Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT)? There is also the open issue of whether Yahoo! will merge with AOL and who will ultimately run that company.

In other words, no sane person wants the job.
