U.S. stock futures are higher Monday morning as crude oil futures surged above $106 per barrel. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 37 points to 12,191 and futures on the S&P 500 stock index climbed 4.80 points to 1,325.10. Nasdaq 100 futures rose 12.75 points to 2,372.50.

Positive sentiment ruled the European markets today: STOXX Europe 600 Index has gained 0.61%, London's FTSE 100 Index moved up 0.79%.

"Iron ore miner Vale (VALE) turned in outstanding results in the third quarter, with a 110 percent increase in revenue, thanks to a more than doubling in iron ore prices this year," notes Ian Wyatt.

The editor of Global Commodity Investing explains, "Iron ore prices, which are set quarterly, have since declined 10 percent, so the company won't rack up such impressive numbers again in this quarter. The weak dollar will also have an impact on the company's margins.

"Still, given China's continued strong expansion, as well as those of other emerging markets-and limited expected supply additions, iron ore prices are likely to remain high for some time to come.

A new method of setting the price on iron ore for export is upsetting Chinese and European steel makers and auto manufacturers, but that same pricing scheme is most likely going to benefit U.S. steelmakers such as AK Steel (AKS), Nucor (NUE) and U.S. Steel (X).

In the past, iron ore pricing was largely set on an annual basis, with the first negotiated ore contracts of the season setting the price for the duration of that season. However, this year, the three largest iron ore miners, BHP Billiton (BHP), Rio Tinto (RTP) and Vale SA (VALE), have decided that they will seek quarterly renegotiation of ore contract pricing. This will allow those companies to take better advantage of increases in iron ore demand and spikes in spot prices.

• A potential $90B deal between mining companies Companhia Vale Do Rio Doce (NYSE: RIO) and Xstrata has hit a number of snags that could possibly end talks, reported the Wall Street Journal, including that Xstrata shareholder Glencore International, which has agreements to market a large part of what Xstrata's mines, wants to expand that to include Vale products besides iron ore.
• According to people familiar with the matter, bids for Australian retail-property giant Centro Properties are expected from The Blackstone Group LP (NYSE: BX) and General Electric Company's (NYSE: GE) GE Real Estate, among others, the Wall Street Journal reported.

• Montreal-based Gildan Activewear Inc (NYSE: GIL) recently paid $135M for V.I. Prewett & Son, a supplier of private label socks to large retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE: WMT). Gildan expects socks to add about $200M in annual revenue, equal to about 20c a share, according to "The New America" column in Investor's Business Daily's.
• A strike at a key auto parts supplier has forced General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) to shut down a pickup plant in Pontiac, the Associated Press reported. The plant will stop production today due to the strike against the parts supplier, American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc (NYSE: AXL), over a contract dispute.
