Verizon: Safety Plus Growth

Verizon (VZ) logoVerizon Communications (VZ), first discussed here on February 12, 2009, at a price of $29.86, continues to power higher, ascending to about $37 with a few hiccups, and I still like the shares here.

In 2011, slow growth and dividend play Verizon should post a 2% to 2.5% revenue gain, after flattish revenue in 2010, with data services being the key revenue increase driver. Meanwhile, Verizon's landline business continues to provide revenue stability.

Outlook for Verizon's Mobile Plan Pricing

Verizon (VZ) logoVerizon (VZ) primarily competes with Sprint Nextel (S) and AT&T (T) in the mobile subscription plan business. The average monthly fee that Verizon's postpaid wireless subscribers pay for wireless service, excluding data service, has been consistently declining over the past few years. The decline in pricing is mainly attributable to nearing saturation of the U.S. cellular market, creating fierce competition among telecom players to maintain and increase their market share.

A successful Verizon-iPhone (AAPL) deal and rising data revenues from smart phone penetration could, however, offset declines in average mobile plan prices.

Small Lines for Verizon's iPhone Launch Could Be Deceiving

Verizon (VZ) logoYesterday marked a pretty big day for Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), as customers could finally walk into a Verizon store and pick up an iPhone. Some analysts had expected to see some long lines, but they did not materialize, creating the impression that the launch was less than successful, but looks can be deceiving.

It is easy to understand where the confusion comes from. In the past, whenever Apple released a new iPhone we saw long lines and often not even supply to cover the launch date demand, resulting in long waits for eager iPhone fanatics to get their hands on the new smartphone.

Trading the Verizon iPhone

Verizon (VZ) iPhoneAs everyone knows by now, the Apple (AAPL) iPhone is headed for Verizon's (VZ) reportedly more reliable network. With so much excitement over the announcement, traders and investors can look at various ways to profit off of this.

The obvious beneficiary is Apple, but there are additional ways to play it, such as the advertising companies, as Verizon hits the airwaves to promote the iPhone, even at the expense of the Android. A few ideas to consider include names like CBS (CBS) and Viacom (VIA), which should win no matter which platform wins.

Verizon Finally Gets the iPhone

Verizon (VZ) logoThe battle among iPhone carriers is fierce. Apple's (AAPL) iPhone is the prized device. AT&T (T), Verizon's (VZ) rival, has had the an exclusive hold on the iPhone. Verizon has been trying to play catch up. Now that Verizon will have the iPhone, the playing field will change dramatically. Verizon, with about 93 million subscribers, could grab an estimated 10 million new subscribers with the iPhone, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The move is also a big boost for Apple. Apple has been feeling the pressure from Google (GOOG), with its Android system. Android phones passed the iPhone in sales in the second quarter. This move to Verizon will open up a new expanded base for Apple.

Apple's Banner Year Is 2011 -- with Verizon Wireless

It's a forgone conclusion that Apple (AAPL) has been the savior of AT&T (T) for the past few years. Little did any of the wireless companies know that Apple's various iPhone models would change the face of the wireless phone industry and sell millions and millions.

And the thing just turned three years old. Is there pent-up demand, though, to use the iPhone on different networks than AT&T (at least, in the U.S.)?

Closing Bell: The Elusive 11,000 DJIA (AIB, AAPL, VZ, AMAT, GNVC)

Today was one of those days where it almost felt as though most sectors of the stock market just want to bide time until a 3 day weekend. The consumer confidence reading at 52.5% came in above the consensus estimates of 51.0. Unfortunately this was a day that wavered between positive and negative. It was hard to see if the day's gains were going to hold until right up to the end of the day. Most importantly, the DJIA got closer and closer to 11,000... but 10.940 was about all it had in it.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,907.42 +11.56 (0.11%)
S&P 500 1,173.27 -0.05 (0.00%)
Nasdaq 2,410.69 +6.33 (0.26%)

Credit Suisse Casts Doubt on Verizon iPhone Timeline

The Street is abuzz with news that Verizon (VZ) may be offering an Apple (AAPL) iPhone this summer. This move would be a huge boost for Verizon, as the iPhone is a must-have accessory for a good portion of cell-phone carriers.

The Wall Street Journal reported that an iPhone for Verizon's CDMA network is being developed. This could be as beneficial for Verizon as it was for AT&T (T). Reportedly, iPhone users have a dickens of a time dealing with AT&T's coverage (I have AT&T service, but for a regular-old cell phone and I have very few problems) and I am sure that you have seen the Verizon commercials with Luke Wilson touting the company's coverage.

AT&T Gets Another Black Eye as iPhones Unavailable in NYC over Weekend

AT&T (T) continues to baffle the wireless industry. It has seen such incredible success with the Apple (AAPL) iPhone for over two years. In a classic tale of a double-edged sword, the phone has been so popular -- and officially limited to only AT&T customers -- that AT&T's wireless network has been overwhelmed in many populous areas. Two famous ones: San Francisco and New York City.

The advanced 3G service made famous by the iPhone 3G has continually faltered for millions of iPhone customers in those areas and more, no matter what spin AT&T puts on the scenario.

Verizon talking to Microsoft about iPhone rival partnership? Here we go again.

Verizon Wireless, a division of Verizon Communications, Inc. (NYSE: VZ), and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) may be partnering soon to take on the Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone. The iPhone, which has re-defined the mobile handset and has racked up huge sales worldwide in the 22 months in existence, needs a strong competitor. So far, all the iPhone "killers" have been anything but.
