Unfortunately, the stock price has been miserable since the dot-com bust. All in all, it has remained in the low single digits. Then again, the company has had to deal with tough rivals, like Amazon.com (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/amazon-com-inc/amzn/nas">AMZN</a>).</p>
<p>But Thursday, investors got a nice surprise. Walgreen (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/walgreen-co/wag/nys">WAG</a>) has <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/24/us-walgreen-drugstore-idUSTRE72N2ZW20110324">agreed to buy Drugstore.com</a> for $429 million. In early trading, DSCM was up a whopping 112% to $3.79.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/24/walgreens-buys-drugstore-com/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Walgreens Strikes a $429 Million Deal for Drugstore.com</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/24/walgreens-buys-drugstore-com/">Walgreens Strikes a $429 Million Deal for Drugstore.com</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 13:30:00 EST. With news like this, it may be beneficial for an investor to take a closer look at the retail sector.</p>
<p>Granted, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-03-22/walgreen-s-profit-increases-10-percent-aided-by-cold-flu-prescriptions.html">Walgreen</a> did not impress Wall Street, and shares fell more than 7%. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/22/us-express-idUSTRE72L2JD20110322">Express</a> and <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/22/us-dollargeneral-idUSTRE72L2IK20110322?pageNumber=2">Dollar General</a>, however, are reaping the benefits with Express trading up over 5% and Dollar General enjoying a 3% upswing. <br />
Others who can tolerate the risk can maintain their full position in WAG, as the uptrend is likely to resume after this respite. <br />
<br />
Look for drug store chain giant Walgreen's revenue to rise about 4-6% in FY2011, boosted by the addition of about 250 net new store openings. The front-store traffic trend in this more than 8,300-store chain should receive a modest tailwind from store remodelings, and back-store (pharmacy) margins should be adequate, aided higher-margin generic drugs. <p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/21/is-walgreen-headed-to-50-and-beyond/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Walgreen Headed to $50 and Beyond?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/21/is-walgreen-headed-to-50-and-beyond/">Is Walgreen Headed to $50 and Beyond?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 17:40:00 EST. <br />
The editor of <a href="http://www.dripinvestor.com">The DRIP Investor</a> explains, "Four stocks in that index -- ExxonMobil (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/exxon-mobil-corporation/xom/nys">XOM</a>), PepsiCo (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/pepsico-inc/pep/nys">PEP</a>), Procter &amp; Gamble (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-procterandgamble-company/pg/nys">PG</a>) and Walgreen (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/walgreen-co/wag/nys">WAG</a>) -- are also long-time residents of our Editor's Portfolio.<br />
<br />
"It's estimated that approximately one-third of the S&amp;P 500 Index's total return since 1926 is due to dividends. Thus, dividends matter, especially if that dividend stream rises over time.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/dividend-aristrocrats-four-income-favorite/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dividend Aristrocrats: Four Income Favorites</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/04/dividend-aristrocrats-four-income-favorite/">Dividend Aristrocrats: Four Income Favorites</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 10:00:00 EST. The market wasn't taken by them. Looking at the extreme right side of the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/cvs-caremark-corporation/cvs/nys/tech-chart">chart</a>, it can be seen that the stock came under some pressure after the release. This afternoon, the shares are under further pressure: at the time of this writing, they were off by 1.1% to $32.55, with heavy volume backing the trade.<br />

Does it sound like the company missed the estimate attached to it? No, that wasn't the problem. According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/cvs-caremark-4q-profit-falls-2-percent/464013/">Associated Press</a>, adjusted profit came in at 80 cents per share, one penny ahead of the prediction.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/04/cvs-caremark-buy-after-latest-report/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CVS Caremark: Buy After Latest Report?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/04/cvs-caremark-buy-after-latest-report/">CVS Caremark: Buy After Latest Report?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. The stock closed on Thursday at $39.19. The 52-week high for the shares is $40.20. Pretty cool for those who own this name. Something even cooler: the drugstore chain issued a solid fiscal first-quarter report earlier in the week.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walgreen-co-reports-26-5-percent-increase-in-diluted-earnings-per-share-to-a-record-62-cents-for-the-first-quarter-2011/rfid398348925/?channel=pf">press release</a> begins with three bragging bullet points: the top line gained 6% and came in at $17.3 billion; <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Gross%20Margin">gross margin</a> expanded by 80 basis points; <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Operating%20Cash%20Flow%20-%20OCF">operating cash flow</a> was $1.2 billion. Nice, but in terms of the latter point, it should be noted that cash from operations was essentially flat compared to last year's number. That's okay, though, it's still respectable.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/24/walgreen-near-52-week-high/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Walgreen Near 52-Week High After Q1 Report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/24/walgreen-near-52-week-high/">Walgreen Near 52-Week High After Q1 Report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. The world <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/economy/">economy</a> has been in shambles for a few years now, and our nation has much work ahead of it. 2010 was an improvement over 2009 and I believe 2011 will show further improvement.<br />
<br />
There are lots of ideas running through my mind as I consider where the economy might be heading in 2011. What opportunities lay in front of us waiting to be picked up or passed over? Just five trading days left, and market activity will slow down except among fund managers making adjustments for tax purposes or window dressing. You should examine your tax situation, too.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/23/chasing-value-pre-christmas-quick-takes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Pre-Christmas Quick Takes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/23/chasing-value-pre-christmas-quick-takes/">Chasing Value: Pre-Christmas Quick Takes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 13:30:00 EST. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect strong <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/" class="inlinked" target="_blank">earnings</a> results from Nike (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nike-inc/nke/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">NKE</a>), Bed Bath &amp; Beyond (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bed-bath-and-beyond-inc/bbby/nas" class="inlinked" target="_blank">BBBY</a>) and Darden Restaurants (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/darden-restaurants-inc/dri/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">DRI</a>), among others. Here's a quick look (for more details, see the <em>DailyFinance</em> <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/2010/12/19/week-in-preview-nike-and-bed-bath-and-beyond-earnings-could-sprea/19768158/">Week in Preview</a>).</p>
<p>Analysts forecast <strong>Nike</strong>'s fiscal-second quarter earnings to come in at 88 cents per share, a 13.6% increase from the same period of last year. The world's leading athletic footwear maker also is expected to post revenue of $4.8 billion for the three months that ended in November. That's 9.3% more than the same period a year earlier. Note that Nike's earnings have not fallen short of consensus estimates in the past five quarters.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/19/week-in-preview-nike-bed-bath-and-beyond-darden-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Late Season Earnings from Nike, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, Darden</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/19/week-in-preview-nike-bed-bath-and-beyond-darden-earnings/">Week in Preview: Late Season Earnings from Nike, Bed Bath &amp; Beyond, Darden</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 19 Dec 2010 12:30:00 EST. <br />
Look for Walgreen's revenue to rise about 4-6% in FY2011, boosted by the addition of about 300 net new store openings. The front-store traffic trend in this more than 8,000-store chain is being hurt by a slower-than-expected U.S. economic recovery, and back-store (pharmacy) margins are not rising as fast as expected, due to a slower roll-out of higher-margin generic drugs.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/21/walgreen-well-positioned-for-the-u-s-economic-recovery/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Walgreen: Well-Positioned for the U.S. Economic Recovery</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/21/walgreen-well-positioned-for-the-u-s-economic-recovery/">Walgreen: Well-Positioned for the U.S. Economic Recovery</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 14:00:00 EST. As I write this, Walgreen (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/walgreen-co/wag/nys">WAG</a>) is up over 12% to $34.04 on the back of an earnings report. With one hour to go before the market closes, volume is huge.</p>
<p>Those of you who bought prior to the report could not have possibly expected this. It represents a big departure from the last time the drugstore posted results. <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/22/walgreen-disappoints-market-with-q3-report/">Back in June</a>, shareholders were disappointed with their investment since Wall Street thought the stock should be sold off on the data. (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/walgreen-co/wag/nys">WAG</a>), which recently began carrying <a href="http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/23/walgreens-gets-fresh/">fresh fruit and vegetables</a> in some of its stores, is scheduled to discuss its fourth-quarter fiscal 2010 financial results Tuesday, September 28, in a <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Conference%20Call" class="inlinked">conference call</a> beginning at 8:30 AM (ET). You can catch a <a href="http://investor.walgreens.com/#">live webcast</a> of the call at the company's website.</p>
<p>During the three months that ended in August, Deerefield, Ill.-based Walgreen launched a <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walgreens-launches-new-social-responsibility-website/rfid355095545/?channel=pf">social responsibility website</a> and <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/walgreens-increases-quarterly-dividend-27-3-percent/rfid348070752/?channel=pf">boosted its dividend</a>. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for the drugstore chain operator to report that its earnings for that period were about the same as a year ago, or 44 cents per share. Revenue is expected to total $16.8 billion, which is a 7.3% increase from the same period of last year. And for the full year, analysts forecast <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Earnings%20Per%20Share,EPS" class="inlinked">EPS</a> of $2.12 (+4.7%) on revenue of $67.4 billion (+6.4%).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/27/walgreen-earnings-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Walgreen Earnings Preview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/27/walgreen-earnings-preview/">Walgreen Earnings Preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 14:00:00 EST. Sometimes you've just got to laugh when a stock that's trading around a dollar suddenly drops over 13%. That's exactly what the drugstore's shares did by the end of the day's regular session. It finished at a quote of 95 cents. And, as you might expect, volume was pretty significant.<br />
<p>
Who buys a stock like this? Clearly, someone braver than me. Adding this one to a portfolio is basically no different than playing the slots in Vegas. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/rite-aid-corporation/rad/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> hasn't changed much since I discussed the company <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/23/rite-aid-smaller-loss-but-im-not-interested/">back in June</a>; it still tells a tale of volatility and downward momentum. It's not a ride I'm willing to take.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/24/rite-aid-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rite Aid Sold on Q2 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/24/rite-aid-earnings/">Rite Aid Sold on Q2 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. At the time of this writing, the shares were higher by $1.34, or 4.4%. At a price of $31.94, they were trading well below the 52-week high of $38.27.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/cvs-caremark-corporation/cvs/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> is...interesting. I'm not sure an investor could look at it and confidently say with certainty where the stock is heading from here. However, for those who were already considering the company, they can at least be confident that they'd be buying lower instead of higher.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/28/cvs-caremark-up-on-earnings-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>CVS Caremark Up on Earnings News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/28/cvs-caremark-up-on-earnings-news/">CVS Caremark Up on Earnings News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 15:00:00 EST.
