When Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) stunned the consumer electronics and mobile market back in April by announcing that it would buy handheld device pioneer Palm for $1.5 billion, many jumped in to say that HP was just playing catch-up to Dell (DELL), which has its own mobile device strategy, and various hardware and mobile PC makers. After all, HP lacked a cohesive mobile and tablet computer product line and strategy -- two areas that are red-hot in the consumer sector. Was this a smart move for HP?

Palm's Last Stand: Its Products Come to AT&T
After reading this breakdown of Palm's (PALM) lethal combination of mistakes in the last year, one would wonder where the company is headed (except into the ground). Without following some sound advice from non-CEOs, the company -- which at one point was the premier smartphone company -- may be headed to shutterville faster than 2012. If the company is even worth anything by then, nobody will want to acquire it and investors in it will lose everything. That is, unless a product launch on AT&T (T) can save the company.

Palm's Q3 loss widens; all hope now rests on the Pre
Palm Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM) reported a dismal third quarter, losing $95 million or 89 cents per share. Although the company's Treo handheld wireless handset products are being beat into the ground by competitors like Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) and Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), its bargain basement Treo Centro helped save the day last quarter. Not so much in the latest quarter.But good news is coming. The company (and a whole community of pre-release fans) is expecting the new Palm Pre smartphone to be the device that would save the company in the current quarter. The new handset, which is shaping up to be a true, functional competitor to the iPhone, looks like a handset worthy of that stated comparison.
