Banks developed a fancy scheme whereby they absolved themselves of all risk from the loans they made. They simply wrapped them up in a bundle and sold them to someone else. What they were doing is essentially packaging and reselling "junk."</p>
<p>When the news of how bad things were became known, the markets froze and collapsed. No one knew who had which securities, and if they did, they didn't know their true value.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/04/02/banks-lobby-against-risk-retention/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Banks Lobby Against Risk Retention on the Loans They Make</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/04/02/banks-lobby-against-risk-retention/">Banks Lobby Against Risk Retention on the Loans They Make</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 02 Apr 2011 11:40:00 EST. As capital markets improve, we foresee Wells benefiting from and a greater presence than it had pre-recession relative to peers like Bank of America (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys">BAC</a>), Goldman Sachs (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>), JPMorgan Chase (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys">JPM</a>), Citigroup (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>) and UBS (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ubs-ag-switzerland/ubs/nys">UBS</a>).</p>
<p>Here we look at the key factors to watch in the coming months that support <a href="https://www.trefis.com/company?hm=WFC.trefis&amp;">our $33.81 price estimate</a>, which is around 10% ahead of the market price.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/26/track-three-items-for-wells-fargo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Track These Three Items for Wells Fargo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/26/track-three-items-for-wells-fargo/">Track These Three Items for Wells Fargo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 26 Mar 2011 11:40:00 EST. Its main competitors include Bank of America (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bank-of-america-corporation/bac/nys" class="inlinked">BAC</a>), Wells Fargo (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wells-fargo-and-company/wfc/nys" class="inlinked">WFC</a>), Goldman Sachs (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys" class="inlinked">GS</a>), Deutsche Bank (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/deutsche-bank-ag-germany/db/nys" class="inlinked">DB</a>) and Morgan Stanley (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/morgan-stanley/ms/nys" class="inlinked">MS</a>).</p>
<p>JPMorgan has benefited from a decline in provisions for credit losses that raised operating margins for its retail banking business. However, a weak economic recovery has resulted in a decline in average interest earning deposits and presents a potential concern for the multinational bank.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/18/jp-morgan-jpm-upside-and-downside-scenarios/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>JPMorgan: Upside and Downside Scenarios</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/18/jp-morgan-jpm-upside-and-downside-scenarios/">JPMorgan: Upside and Downside Scenarios</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 11:30:00 EST. <p>During the quarter, Wells Fargo reported net income of 61 cents per share ($3.2 billion), matching the consensus estimate. A year earlier, the company earned 8 cents per share ($394 million) thanks to a large preferred dividend paid to the government (this payment was not necessary this year). The bank's CEO John Stumpf stated that the bank's business segments "contributed to earnings as the economy started to gain strength."</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/19/lower-reserves-lead-to-higher-profit-for-wells-fargo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lower Reserves Lead to Higher Profit for Wells Fargo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/19/lower-reserves-lead-to-higher-profit-for-wells-fargo/">Lower Reserves Lead to Higher Profit for Wells Fargo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. And fast on the heels of last week's <a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/jpmorgan-earnings-the-return-of-big-bank-profits/19801174/">big earnings beat</a> from JPMorgan Chase (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/jpm/nys" class="inlinked">JPM</a>), there will be plenty more results from the financial sector to peruse this week.</p>
<p>Among the financials expected to post double-digit earnings growth this week are Capital One Financial (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/capital-one-financial-corporation/cof/nys" class="inlinked">COF</a>), Morgan Stanley (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/morgan-stanley/ms/nys" class="inlinked">MS</a>), SLM Corp. The world <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/economy/">economy</a> has been in shambles for a few years now, and our nation has much work ahead of it. 2010 was an improvement over 2009 and I believe 2011 will show further improvement.<br />
<br />
There are lots of ideas running through my mind as I consider where the economy might be heading in 2011. What opportunities lay in front of us waiting to be picked up or passed over? Just five trading days left, and market activity will slow down except among fund managers making adjustments for tax purposes or window dressing. You should examine your tax situation, too.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/23/chasing-value-pre-christmas-quick-takes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Pre-Christmas Quick Takes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/23/chasing-value-pre-christmas-quick-takes/">Chasing Value: Pre-Christmas Quick Takes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 13:30:00 EST. Because of this, he has a good perspective on economic sentiment. And, according to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-09-13/buffett-rules-out-double-dip-u-s-recession-says-berkshire-units-growing.html">a recent speech</a> at the Montana Economic Development Summit, Buffett is unabashedly bullish on things.</p>
<p>First of all, he thinks a <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Double%20Dip%20Recession" class="inlinked">double-dip recession</a> is highly unlikely. Then again, it appears that many investors believe the same. But, the question is: Can the U.S. <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/economy/" class="inlinked">economy</a> show more robust growth?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/14/buffett-on-economic-recovery/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Buffett Says the Economy Is Hunky-Dory</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/14/buffett-on-economic-recovery/">Buffett Says the Economy Is Hunky-Dory</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 14:00:00 EST. My answer is an unequivocal "No!"<br />
<br />
This does not mean that I think we are going to experience a dramatic improvement in the economy. We are not. Many of my colleagues seem to oppose my view, so it is not without some trepidation that I take this stand. However, I see the glass half full. My view is that others are overly influenced by "group-think" and the calls of doom. <br />
<br />
I do think that we are currently adrift in uncharted waters and we may have a faulty rudder, too. The biggest fear I have is that everyone jabbering about another deep recession may actually cause one. <br />
<br />
The following supports why I feel, from what we know, that we are not destined for a double-dip recession:<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/01/chasing-value-no-double-dip-recession/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: No Double-Dip Recession</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/01/chasing-value-no-double-dip-recession/">Chasing Value: No Double-Dip Recession</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 14:00:00 EST. This report is long overdue, but I will post it anyway since all of my past year's picks and results have been made public.</p>
<p>The market was very harsh in the early part of 2009, filling investors fear and trepidation, and sinking to a March 9, 2009 bottom. Perhaps some of the bleeding has stopped, but the economy has not healed as bears and bulls seem to carry the day, or every other day.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/31/chasing-value-2009-results-crushed-the-sandp-500/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value™: 2009 Results Crushed the S&amp;P 500</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/31/chasing-value-2009-results-crushed-the-sandp-500/">Chasing Value™: 2009 Results Crushed the S&amp;P 500</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 10:00:00 EST. This story is about one of my less successful investments, which I acquired and sold many years ago. Over the past four years, I have <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/25/chasing-value-intuitive-surgical-is-not-a-bargain-but-its-clo/">written many times</a> about Intuitive Surgical (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/intuitive-surgical-inc/isrg/nas">ISRG</a>), by far my best stock investment, up 4,500%, give or take, over a ten-year period. I bought in at the bottom and held on for the ride, until last year when the market tanked and took Intuitive Surgical with it.</p>
<p>The other company was Superconductor Technologies (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/superconductor-technologies-inc/scon/nas">SCON</a>), the makers of high-temperature <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/company/superconductor-technologies-inc/scon/nas">devices that improve communications transmission</a> quality.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/27/chasing-value-tale-of-two-tech-stocks-isrg-and-scon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value™: Tale of Two Tech Stocks (ISRG and SCON)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/27/chasing-value-tale-of-two-tech-stocks-isrg-and-scon/">Chasing Value™: Tale of Two Tech Stocks (ISRG and SCON)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 12:00:00 EST. They have been closing branches, raising fees and seeing a reduction in loan losses with anticipated continued improvement looking forward.<br />
<br />
The stock is up in morning trading and analysts are raising estimates as fast as they can backpedal out of their current positions.<br />
<br />
How should investors view Wells Fargo's potential now? Is it time to take profits into the bullishness, jump into the fray before the opportunity escapes or hold tight patiently until the excitement of the day dissipates?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/21/chasing-value-wells-fargo-beats-the-street-offering-positive-vi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Wells Fargo Beats the Street Offering Positive View</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/21/chasing-value-wells-fargo-beats-the-street-offering-positive-vi/">Chasing Value: Wells Fargo Beats the Street Offering Positive View</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 12:30:00 EST. Wells Fargo Financial will be integrated into the company's community banking network -- closing 638 independent consumer finance offices in the process. The firm added that it is no longer going to deal with non-prime mortgage loans.</p>
<p>Reportedly, roughly 27% of the financial firm's Wells Fargo Financial employees will be laid off. In the next two months, 2,800 employees will be sent packing, while 1,000 more will be jettisoned in the next year. According to WFC, these changes will not affect WFC and Wachovia banks across the United States.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/08/wells-fargo-job-cuts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wells Fargo to Cut 3,800 Jobs in Restructuring</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/08/wells-fargo-job-cuts/">Wells Fargo to Cut 3,800 Jobs in Restructuring</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 08 Jul 2010 09:30:00 EST. One of my dear friends Randy S. is taking a post graduate business class at UCLA where this issue is a part of the course. He is supposed to figure out what non US companies Berkshire Hathaway (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/berkshire-hathaway-inc-cl-a/brk.a/nys">BRK.A</a>/<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/berkshire-hathaway-inc-cl-b/brk.b/nys">BRK.B</a>), led by Warren Buffett, might be considering for investment.<br />
<br />
Ahh yes, the prediction business, quite tricky indeed. Starting with some basics, in most cases I would stick to the time tested philosophy that past performance is not an indicator of future success. That said, I think in the case of Buffett, it does. There are many clues along the trail based on his past performance.<br />
<br />
Here are some basic consistencies from the existing portfolio that I would expect to hold true going forward.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/16/serious-money-buffett-looking-beyond-our-borders-next-moves/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Serious Money: Buffett Looking Beyond Our Borders</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/16/serious-money-buffett-looking-beyond-our-borders-next-moves/">Serious Money: Buffett Looking Beyond Our Borders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 18:00:00 EST. <br />
This reminds me of Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/berkshire-hathaway-inc-cl-a/brk.a/nys">BRK.A</a>) or Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>) that have both displayed plenty of the former and arrived at the latter in their business pursuits.<br />
<br />
Derivatives like Collateral Debt Obligations, or CDO's, and Credit Default Swaps, get their value from something else entirely: total hype in an environment of smoke and mirrors.<br />
<br />
It turns out that if you build layer upon layer of derivatives until you have no idea what the original underlying value truly is, it becomes so convoluted that a genius can't comprehend it at all. It is self evident that nobody could even determine all the counter-party risk.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/09/financial-reform-has-no-credit-default-swap/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Financial Reform Has No Credit Default Swap</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/09/financial-reform-has-no-credit-default-swap/">Financial Reform Has No Credit Default Swap</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 09 Jun 2010 15:00:00 EST.
