(YHOO)
Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) continues to dominate the news nearly a week after announcing its $44 billion bid for internet rival Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO). Analysts are still deciphering the reasons why the world's largest software company wants to pay such a premium for an ailing -- but still powerful -- internet brand. The prevailing wisdom is that the growing power of Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) has finally forced Microsoft's hand here. To a point, that's very much true.

But the future of the web may not be fought on the laptop screen nearest you, but instead on the mobile screen that goes everywhere in your pocket. With that "internet everywhere" mentality that's still not a huge reality for millions of consumers, mobile advertising beckons as a huge revenue stream.

Tapping into that may be a large reason why Microsoft wants to merge with Yahoo!, according to Gartner analyst Philip Redman. "Leadership in mobile advertising is still unclaimed, while Google is threatening to do there what it did on the internet, so Microsoft is being preemptive."

Is mobile advertising the next coming of the internet? Many industry watchers and analysts believe so, although most phones absolutely stink as portable internet access terminals. The Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone has been the game-changer; it was made for the internet. Well, if you can see past that poky-slow wireless cellular connection that you probably have. Analyst Jeff Kagan said that "Yahoo touches so many customers and there's so much advertising potential in this deal . . . It's the kind of world Microsoft loves."

Disclosure: the author holds a long position in MSFT.
Microsoft's Yahoo! bid has a lot to do with mobile originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 13:36:00 EST. Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) announced it would be introducing a new advertising platform to U.S. mobile Yahoo! customers. No, this one isn't for the web at large, but the web "at small."

In addition to Google's announcement that it would be selling advertising space through its AdWords program so that targeted ads would show up next to Google searches performed using the Google wireless portal for mobile devices and cellphones (www.google.com/xhtml), Yahoo! (wap.yahoo.com) appears to be getting in that same game now for U.S. customers -- furthering its previous introduction of mobile ads in Japan and the U.K.

Most U.S. users cannot imagine searching the mobile web on their cellphones on a regular basis yet, but that doesn't mean it's not happening. In fact, U.S. wireless users are way behind most of the world in terms of wireless technology and fast data streams to our cellular phones. Europe's been the perennial leader here, but Japan and South Korea have had fast wireless phones with larger color screens years before we even had the first sign of these technologies here in the U.S.

Continue reading Yahoo!'s stab at mobile phone advertising

Yahoo!'s stab at mobile phone advertising originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 05 Oct 2006 10:42:00 EST. Motorola has agreed to embed Yahoo! Go into tens of millions of the company's wireless handsets starting in the first half of 2007. With more wireless phones in use worldwide than personal computers, the importance of a partnership like this cannot be understated -- this is HUGE for Yahoo!

This will put the Yahoo! web experience at the fingertips of millions of customers who expect and demand -- generally unrealistically -- that the user experience of a major web portal be just like it is on a computer screen. It's hard (if not impossible) to make the web experience on a postage-stamp-sized screen the same as it is on a huge computer screen, but that is what Yahoo! has aimed for with its Yahoo! Go service.

Motorola has agreed also to make Yahoo! Go very prominent in menu placement on the handsets themselves, and a co-branded marketing campaign will surely start this fall around the launch. With Motorola being the second-largest wireless handset manufacturer in the world behind Nokia, this is no small potato for Yahoo! -- it is a major coup. Motorola is the handset company to beat right now as it continues to ride with wave of incredible success with its RAZR line of slim handsets that have recently passed the 50 million units sold mark -- in less than two years. That's prime real estate for Yahoo!

Yahoo! to be embedded in tens of millions of Motorola handsets originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 21 Jul 2006 13:44:00 EST.
