Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), a fashion chain that competes for the attention of the mall shopper with American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) and Gap (GPS), is selling off in afternoon trading while I write this. My screen showed the shares down $1.72, or 4.2%, to $39.06. Volume, however, wasn't too bad with roughly a few hours to go before the close of the trading session; it was below the norm, but I do expect it to be above average by the time all is said and done. The company reported Q1 stats today, and that is obviously what's driving the bearish sentiment, in part at least.
As can be seen from the one-year chart, the stock has sailed some choppy seas over the last several months. After hitting a 52-week high of over $50, the shares started to slide. Some of that weakness can be attributed to what's happening in the market vis-a-vis the Greece situation.

Urban Outfitters Down on Q1 News
Urban Outfitters (URBN), whose colleagues include Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) and Gap (GPS), is down in afternoon trading. The stock was off by $1.65, or over 4%, and had a quote of $37.76. Volume wasn't outrageous when I was writing this, but it will go above the norm once all is said and done for the day.The stock hasn't been a bad one to own over the last twelve months. Of course, many retailers have seen their shares rise along with the improving economy. What should we think of Urban Outfitters after today's earnings report?

Guess Profit Surges: Time to Buy?
Guess (GES), a fashion concept whose related companies include Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), Gap (GPS), and Polo Ralph Lauren (RL), posted fourth-quarter results Wednesday after the bell. Adjusted income went up well over 40% to 96 cents per diluted share. According to Earnings.com, Wall Street believed 81 cents per share would be the bottom-line number.
Total net sales increased 14%. Same-store sales were up 5.3% (they were better by 2% if you look at the metric in constant dollars). Net cash from operating activities over the last twelve months experienced significant expansion.
American Eagle Outfitters Rallies on Q4 Stats
American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), whose colleagues include Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) and Gap (GPS), responded well to the company's fourth-quarter report. Adjusted income was 33 cents per diluted share. A year ago, only 19 cents per diluted share was generated. Oddly enough, 33 cents was the analyst's call.
I'm characterizing this as odd because I guess I was expecting to see a big beat on the bottom line after observing the strong rally in the stock. At the time of this writing, shares of the retailer were trading higher by over 6%, with tons of volume backing the bid.

J. Crew Posts Strong Q4: Time to Take Profits?
J. Crew Group (JCG), an apparel chain whose related stocks include Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), Gap (GPS), and JCPenney (JCP), reported strong sales and earnings yesterday after the bell. I'm impressed; I have to say, like I did the last time, bravo to an excellent quarter.
Overall sales rose 19% in Q4, according to the corporate press release. Same-store revenues increased 17%. Earnings per share were 61 cents on a diluted basis. A loss of 22 cents was recorded twelve months ago. As far as the analysts go, they should be pleased. Then again, they probably should be disappointed, since their projections were completely taken out (I guess it all depends on one's perspective). Either way, the call was for net income to come in around 46 cents per share.

Abercrombie (ANF) Looking Rangebound?
With earnings now out of the way for Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), option traders are looking for the stock to stay in a short-term range (at least for the next few weeks). Shortly after today's opening bell, a trader simultaneously sold 6,000 each of the March 35 puts and March 35 calls, creating a short straddle. A straddle seller is essentially expecting limited volatility in the underlying stock over the option's lifespan. The closer ANF finishes to the straddle strike (35) at expiration, the better it is for the seller. In fact, for the seller to retain the entire credit collected today, ANF would have to close right at 35 on March expiration in about four weeks.
Abercrombie & Fitch Posts Lower Sales in Q4
Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), whose mall colleagues include American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) and Gap (GPS), closed over 4% higher on Tuesday on active volume. The market liked the fourth quarter numbers. I did not.
Let's see. Total sales were down 5%. Same-store sales skidded 13%. Total company domestic sales contracted 12%. And net income came in at 91 cents per share, adjusted. This compared unfavorably to the $1.06 per share made in the year-ago period.

Ten Valentine's Day Stocks to Hate
Not all companies in these love-struck industries are good buys. Here are 10 stocks to break up with this Valentine's Day.
- 1-800-Flowers (FLWS): A good gift, but a poorly run company that has posted a loss for three of the past four quarters.
- Hershey (HSY): Missing out on the Cadbury merger was not so sweet for Hershey.
- Cardiac Sciences (CSCX): It's hard to have a heart for a company that fails seven out of my eight fundamental screens.

As so often happens at this point in the earnings season, focus begins to shift to the results from retailers. And the world's largest retailer is among those that step into the spot light this week.

Retailers Enjoy Solid January, Led by Luxury Set
Shoppers spent more time – and money – in malls last month, with many retailers posting on Thursday strong results in what tends to be the final month of their fiscal year. The rich are doing a better job of prying open their wallets, as RetailMetrics, a research firm that covers the industry, reported that luxury retailers such as Saks (SKS) enjoyed larger gains in January than bargain stores. Signs of life in financial markets have made wealthier consumers more willing to spend ... and we all know that a recovery has to start someplace.Continue reading Retailers Enjoy Solid January, Led by Luxury Set
Retail Results to Come this Week, but Spring Is the Test
This week, the world's top retailers will tell investors how the much-discussed holiday season went. Analysts expect a year-over-year gain of 1.3% for stores open at least a year, which of course uses a dismal 2008 as a benchmark.
The holiday shopping season is the last chance retailers get to pump up their financial statements before the close of their fiscal year, which usually comes at the end of January. For some retailers, up to 40% of their revenue comes in the weeks heading into Christmas.

Early Estimates for Retail Sales Favor Online
The first estimates for the holiday shopping season have come in. MasterCard (MA) Advisors unit SpendingPulse, which tracks retail spending, puts the result at a year-over-year increase of 3.6%. This includes all form of payment and does not factor in gas and auto sales. The increase comes relative to the 2008 holiday season, which was the worst season in decades for retailers thanks to the global financial crisis.
Says Kamalesh Rao, director of economic research at SpendingPulse, "Last year the economy and consumer spending were in free fall. This year we're talking about an environment that has stabilized, that has seen a leveling off." But, that doesn't mean it's turned the corner yet. Holiday spending isn't enough to cure what ails us.
