Now we fast forward to the smartphone and the tablet. These new devices are taking the technology world by storm. Apple (AAPL) could sell 30 to 65 million iPad 2s this year.

As a result, The PC industry is bleeding badly. Look at these numbers:

February revenue from PC makers in Taiwan is down 20%. The number is significant because Taiwan manufacturers 90% of all PCs.

Hon Hai (HNHAF), which makes Apple products and PCs for Dell (DELL), saw shipments down 18% in February, as reported in Financial Times.

Gartner, a research consultancy, lowered PC shipments by 5% to 387.8 million units this month.

(AMD) are two tech companies that have been fighting in the microprocessor market for longer than many of us care to remember. Intel controls the majority of the PC processor market for consumer machines and business servers, but AMD always seems to be there to mop up market share with as much gusto as it can. Enter the latest battle originating from AMD's end: recruiting the red-hot Acer to power its servers with AMD chips.

Continue reading AMD Recruits Acer in Server Chip Battle with Intel

AMD Recruits Acer in Server Chip Battle with Intel originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 29 Mar 2010 15:00:00 EST. In its most recent quarter, the company announced that it attained its highest profit in almost three years, mostly at the expense of the company it recently displaced from the number two spot, Dell (DELL). It is still behind global computer leader Hewlett-Packard (HPQ).

At the same time it has grown shipments, it has kept an eye on profits, which is impressive. In general, rapid market share gains means margin cuts, but not here. Acer, which just four years ago seemed in disarray as it tried to find out why it was being beaten in the PC game, has apparently figured it out.

Continue reading Acer Announces Highest Net Income in Three Years

Acer Announces Highest Net Income in Three Years originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 09 Feb 2010 12:40:00 EST. It markets the eMachines, Acer and Gateway computer brands and overtook Dell Inc. (DELL) recently to become the second-largest computer seller in the world. It may not be the most innovative, but it is selling a large amount of PCs every quarter. Its presence is large in the U.S. retail sector, where Dell's efforts over the last 18 months are still not where they need to be.

Now that Acer Chairman J.T. Wang wants to see Apple's (AAPL) new iPad tablet computer, one has to wonder why Acer cares at all. Although Amazon, Inc. (AMZN) already has the Kindle e-reader device (and ready to unveil a third-generation product to compete with Apple), Acer's Chairman may not realize that Apple is not wanting to compete as a tablet PC manufacturer.

Continue reading Why Acer Won't Be Able to Compete with Apple's iPad

Why Acer Won't Be Able to Compete with Apple's iPad originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 17:00:00 EST. The eMachines brand is entry-level, the Acer brand seems to be mid-level and Acer has positioned the Gateway brand as a premium product.

All told, Acer's might unseated Dell (DELL) and the company shows no signs of slowing down sales. It even was an early participant in the netbook category last year, helping it capture sales in that red-hot category as well.

Continue reading Acer Takes On Apple and Amazon in E-book Readers and App Downloads

Acer Takes On Apple and Amazon in E-book Readers and App Downloads originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 12:20:00 EST. What is propelling the rise? As you might guess, it is price. Prices for PCs were lower in 2009 than the year before. The average selling price was estimated at $660 dollars, though it may have been lower. In 2008, the price was $771.

As for shipments by companies, Hewlett Packard (HPQ) was number one, followed by Acer, with Dell (DELL) in third place. To do that will be no easy matter, as HP's rampage in sales in the past 24 months has put it way ahead of former number two Dell (DELL) and, for the first time, made it a $100 billion company (annual sales). But Acer has not tread lightly either, gobbling up the Gateway and Packard Bell brands.

Where can Acer work on its plans for global domination? China, of course. The company will increase sales training and work on upping its retail network in China by 30% as it chases the fastest-growing PC market in the world. So far, Acer's mindshare in China is in fifth place due to its inability to be recognized for the global PC behemoth it is. Acer intends to change that in China.

Continue reading Acer Sets China Sales Strategy As It Chases Hewlett-Packard for Top PC Spot

Acer Sets China Sales Strategy As It Chases Hewlett-Packard for Top PC Spot originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 19 Dec 2009 14:40:00 EST. The PC maker has now said that it will be featuring Google, Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOG) 's Android operating system on future netbooks as an alternative to what it ships on most of its netbooks -- Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ: MSFT) aging Windows XP operating system.

The difference here is that while Microsoft XP still may cost a little to Acer and all other PC makers circulating netbooks on the market, Android is a freely-available, open-source product. Acer won't pay a dime for each copy of Android in installs on its netbooks, which -- interestingly enough -- may be the first real head-to-head equitable competition between Google and Microsoft.
Continue reading Acer to use Google's Android software on upcoming netbook PCs

Acer to use Google's Android software on upcoming netbook PCs originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 09:40:00 EST. Now Asia companies like Lenovo and Acer are after its No.2 position. And, they are having some success.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "Dell Inc. is preparing management changes that are expected to shake up an executive team that Chief Executive Michael Dell brought in as part of his turnaround plan for the big computer maker." The head of global operations and the chief of marketing will both be moved out of their jobs.

Dell has already done a lot of restructuring, laying off thousand of workers. Its stock is off almost 80% this year, compared to less than 30% for HP. Surprisingly, Dell's shares have done as well as Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) over the same period.

Most commentators will say that Micheal Dell is the problem and that the board should replace him, but that dodges the complexity of Dell's situation. It operates in world where PCs are often a commodities, sold on price as much as function. The new Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) operation system that runs them, Vista, is unpopular. Apple appears to have taken much of the high end of the market with its Mac.

Dell also faces a harsh economy which has already begun to erode its sales. One of the reasons Apple's stock is down so much is that it faces the same negative forces.

For the time being, it looks like even Dell cannot fix Dell. And, its situation in the broader marketplace is such that no one else can either.
