Blockbuster was once the biggest name in video rentals, but it has been unable to keep up with changes in the market created by companies such as Netflix (NFLX) and Redbox.

Continue reading DISH Networks Wins Blockbuster Auction

DISH Networks Wins Blockbuster Auction originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 12:40:00 EST. It said Wednesday it has agreed to purchase Atheros Communications (ATHR) for $3.2 billion, as reported by the Associated Press. Why is Qualcomm making this deal? What are the advantages to the company?

Qualcomm is a big player in supplying chips to wireless phones. But that's not stopping the company.

For example, Walmart sees Africa as an attractive frontier for growth. Despite the risks, the continent is massive, with over one billion people. And no doubt, they want to get discounts on goods.

So this week, Walmart made its first move; that is, the company agreed to shell out $2.4 billion for a 51% take in Massmart. The company is the #3 retailer in South Africa and has several brands that cater to general merchandise, warehouse clubs and home improvement.
Continue reading Wal-Mart's Next Move: Africa

Wal-Mart's Next Move: Africa originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 14:40:00 EST. Of course, the large ones were particularly harmful for shareholders.

So what to do? Well, interestingly enough, Alcatel-Lucent has been recently buying up tiny companies, especially in the fast-growing mobile space.

And the latest deal came this week: OpenPlug (the price tag was not disclosed). Then in 2006, the company came back to the public markets, providing a nice return for the private equity sponsors, which included TPG Capital, Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and Bain Capital.

OK, so how about going private again? Actually, this is the latest rumor making the rounds. Of course, the targets have been mostly social type companies. For the most part, Google needs to protect its advertising franchise -- especially from Facebook.

(INTC). In fact, they seem bewildered by the move. Why in the world would a maker of chip sets want to own a data security software provider? Let me tell you why.

The days when we subscribed to a third-party service to download those clunky security patches will soon be gone -- and not missed. Those annoying downloads and incessant updates will go the way of the dinosaurs. Intel is preparing for the next generation of data security. Soon your data security will be provided as an integral part of your data handling and communication devices. It will finally be manufactured right into your chip sets. That's the way it should have been long ago.

Continue reading Intel Offers Investors a Safe Bet

Intel Offers Investors a Safe Bet originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 10:30:00 EST. At the time, the company was still sitting on a significant portion of its last round of capital, and given the $20 million annual burn rate revealed late last year -- plus the revenue it's generating -- it's unlikely that Twitter has had to deplete its coffers. So, Twitter has cash to put to work, and now we're seeing what that means.

On its blog, Twitter announced Friday that it has entered into an agreement with Atebits (aka Loren Brichter) to acquire Tweetie, which is one of the top Twitter clients for the Apple (AAPL) iPhone. In addition to acquiring the application, Twitter is also picking up talent. The transaction carries a total price tag of $722 million. Including $272 million of FACT's cash and securities, the net cost turns out to be roughly $450 million.
Back in December, FACT turned down Biogen Idec's (BIIB) unsolicited takeover offer of $17.50 per share. Prudential Plc (PUK), the largest insurer in the UK, is going to buy AIG's Asian operations for $35.5 billion in cash and stock. Prudential will pick up more than 20 million new customers, and the federal government will squeeze out a bit of financial relief.

The deal, which is for AIG's AIA Group, consists of $25 billion in cash and $10.5 billion in stock and other securities. Prudential will raise $20 billion in a rights offering and $5 billion through a bond issue to cover the cash portion of its offer.
Continue reading Prudential to Pick up AIG Asia Unit for $35 Billion

Prudential to Pick up AIG Asia Unit for $35 Billion originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 01 Mar 2010 08:50:00 EST. That seems to be the characterization of Safeway Inc. (SWY), as revealed in the company's recent 2009 Q4 report. Thursday, the company reported a net loss of nearly $1.61 billion, which was in keeping with its own expectations. Through it all, Safeway Chairman, President and CEO, Steve Burd is taking what appears to be a prideful stance on the company's record 2009 free cash flow of $1.5 billion.

What I am seeing here is a company which has taken a firm and responsible hold of its interior financial workings as its field operations remain subject to economic whims and conditions which are largely out of company control. An active share buy back program, which looks to be perfectly timed, has apparently helped to place a respectable floor beneath the company's share price.

Safeway Earnings Indications originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 26 Feb 2010 17:00:00 EST. Femsa Cerveza (FMX) -- brewer of Dos Equis, Sol, and Tecate -- was purchased by Heineken in a deal worth $5.5 billion in stock.
