Agricultural Caution Is in the Wind

"We want to make sure the playing field is level."

So said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, speaking in regard to the Obama administration's mounting concern about consolidation of control in America's agricultural system.

In light of that statement, investors may wish to exercise due caution when making future plays in companies such as Monsanto (MON), Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), and Tyson Foods (TSN), just to name a few. A recent Associated Press report indicates that the administration is undertaking a series of workshops aimed at creating policy initiatives with a focus on awakening competition in agriculture.

Is Global Warming Dead? Stocks to Dump ...

With the failed global warming submit; leaked emails, faked numbers, suppressed data and major snow storms hitting both Europe and America global warning aka "climategate" seems to have taken a major hit recently. Some are even going as far as predicting the demise of global warming.

This could be a big turning point for global warming. Having been caught in a lie; they have lost massive amount of creditability and now face an uphill battle to convince a skeptical public. Certainly, global warming may regain public credibility, but it will face a lot of scrutiny as it tries.

Serious Money: Cheapest Stocks List Shrinks from 26 to 21

While most investors are fretting the markets recent contraction, you can be quite confident that "my pal Warren" has a smile on his face, as does Peter Lynch, Ken Heebner, Bill Miller, Bruce Berkowitz, and any number of fellow value investors that know now may be a time of opportunity. That is because they have the experience and understanding to pounce when they have a chance to buy things cheap.

This is the fourth installment of my series to discover just that: cheap stocks. If you would like to get on board from the beginning then review the initial post which screened for stocks with lower than market average P/E ratios, see Serious Money: Market Looks Cheap to Me -- 35 Stocks. In the second installment, I looked at yield and PEG ratios: Serious Money: Still Cheap Market -- 35 Stocks + Yields & Growth. Then I moved on to the the P/S and P/CF metrics in Serious Money: Cheapest Stocks Yet -- From 35 to 26, cutting nine stocks.

Serious Money: Cheapest Stocks Yet -- From 35 to 26

Is the market overpriced? Maybe it is cheap, or perhaps it is fairly valued. This is the third in a series examining the issue. Still, it has been my contention that it does not make any difference because no matter how the market is valued as a whole, there are plenty of cheap stocks out there to accommodate a large amount of capital allocation even this deep into a bull run.

If you would like to follow along from the beginning, the initial post screened stocks for lower than market average P/E ratios: Serious Money: Market Looks Cheap to Me -- 35 Stocks. In the second installment, I looked at yield and PEG ratios: Serious Money: Still Cheap Market -- 35 Stocks + Yields & Growth.

Serious Money: Market Looks Cheap to Me -- 35 Stocks

We frequently receive comments that the market is overpriced. Recently one of our active readers commented that the market P/E was 30, which it's not. The actual rate (S&P forecast) has been even higher at times due to the volatile market.

The average should trend closer to the long term P/E of 15.7 in the next few years. However, I have reviewed companies often covered on our site and come up with a list of 35 stocks that have price-to-earning ratios below the long-term average already. I think there are dozens of bargains regardless of the status of the overall market.

Chasing Value: 2010 Dividends for Ten Stock Picks

During my tenure at BloggingStocks I have expressed my opinion often about the contribution that dividends make to your overall return. Most shrewd investors, and especially "my pal Warren," know this and understand why I re-emphasize the point when I make my annual selections.

By now I hope you have had a chance to peruse my picks for 2010. If not the links below will give you another opportunity.

Chasing Value: 2010 -- #7 Archer Daniels Midland

How hungry are you? The world is becoming hungrier all the time and Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) seeks to fill that need.

It is one of the world's largest processors of oilseeds, corn, and wheat. It turns corn into syrups, sweeteners, citric and lactic acids, and ethanol to fill your tank too. ADM also produces wheat flour for bakeries and pasta makers; cocoa and chocolate products for confectioners; animal-feed ingredients for farmers, and malt for brewers. It operates one of the world's largest crop origination and transportation networks, through which it connects crops and their markets across the globe.

Chasing Value: 10 Stock Picks for 2010

To arrive at this years ten picks I scoured business journals and editorials, online and off. I also ran through a series of stock screens repeatedly over the last few months filtering for five primary value metrics identifying stocks worthy of further consideration.

The 5 data points were price-to-sales (P/S), price-to-book (P/B), price-to-cash flow (P/CF), dividend yield and return-on-equity (ROE). I did look at other things but these were the subject of my initial focus.

World Series trade #3: Archer Daniels Midland (ADM)

World Series Trade #3 - Archer Daniels Midland (ADM)When Americans go to the ball park to watch the World Series, we eat hot dogs. It's a tradition. It is also representative of a developed economy to eat lots of protein.

China is a developing economy with 22% of the world's population. And 1.3 billion Chinese people are developing an appetite for more protein, just as the people of almost all industrialized countries have. To make meat, you need grain. What China doesn't have is a lot of land and water for growing grain.

Consider ADM, because experience counts in an uncertain global economy

Uncertain economic times lead to uncertain corporate performances, which places a premium on demonstrated business models, and that's why I'm reiterating my Buy rating for Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE: ADM), first recommended on March 25, 2009, at a price of $28.78.

Archer has not appreciated as much as expected since March, but the Buy call remains; look for FY2009 revenue to increase 2-3%, reflecting seven, new agribusiness plants.
