Eighteen Years Later, AutoCAD Comes Back to the Mac

Autodesk logoApple's (AAPL) Mac has often been considered a niche product -- at least compared to the massive PC market. Yet, this is starting to change. A key has been the success of the iPhone and the iPad. So why not get a Mac as well?

Well, this is certainly starting to play out, as seen with each quarterly report from Apple (the latest one saw 3.5 million Mac sales). And as a result, major application developers are getting interested in the platform. Just look at Autodesk (ADSK). The company has announced that it will launch its flagship architecture design product, AutoCAD, on the Mac for the first time in nearly two decades. Of course, there will be versions for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that will integrate with the Mac version.

Closing Bell: Bears Barely Win on Friday the 13th (ADSK, LLY, JWN, NVDA, RMBS, PDLI, UNCA, IBM)

A tame CPI and a slightly better University of Michigan sentiment reading failed to greatly enthuse investors despite the crummy week we saw. A hawkish Fed president Hoenig out calling for higher rates might not have helped. We also never got that GM IPO Filing that was supposed to come. This was a day that honestly felt like the red or green signal for the markets were not certain until the bitter end.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 10,303.15 -16.80 (-0.16%)
S&P 500 1,079.25 -4.36 (-0.40%)
Nasdaq 2,173.48 -16.79 (-0.77%)

Put Volume Spikes on Autodesk

Autodesk ADSK logoRight out of the gate Wednesday, put volume surged to about 50 times the norm on Autodesk (ADSK). Within the first 45 minutes of trading, about 20,000 puts changed hands on the design software company. Most of the activity is taking place in the July series, where it looks as though traders are buying new puts at the 25 and 31 strikes. The stock is currently trading near $26.60, in between these two popular put options.

However, today's preference for bearishly oriented options isn't exactly a deviation from the norm for Autodesk. Among options slated to expire within three months, puts currently outnumber calls by a margin of 2.74 to one.

Before the bell: Futures lower on economic concerns; retail, tech in focus

U.S. stock futures declined Thursday morning, pointing to a lower start on Wall Street as investors started weighing the possibility that stocks have run up too far and too fast ahead of the economy -- the economic recovery may not be as robust. The retail sector is in focus with several retailers reporting earnings. The tech sector could also experience pressure.

On Wednesday, stocks ended lower with technology shares leading the decline, and the Nasdaq composite down nearly half a percent. Results from Salesforce.com (CRM) and Autodesk (ADSK) weighed on the sector as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Microsoft (MSFT) were among the leading decliners in the Dow.
